Epistemological Pluralism: Reorganizing Interdisciplinary Research  [cached]
Thaddeus R. Miller,Timothy D. Baird,Caitlin M. Littlefield,Gary Kofinas
Ecology and Society , 2008,
Abstract: Despite progress in interdisciplinary research, difficulties remain. In this paper, we argue that scholars, educators, and practitioners need to critically rethink the ways in which interdisciplinary research and training are conducted. We present epistemological pluralism as an approach for conducting innovative, collaborative research and study. Epistemological pluralism recognizes that, in any given research context, there may be several valuable ways of knowing, and that accommodating this plurality can lead to more successful integrated study. This approach is particularly useful in the study and management of social–ecological systems. Through resilience theory's adaptive cycle, we demonstrate how a focus on epistemological pluralism can facilitate the reorganization of interdisciplinary research and avoid the build-up of significant, but insufficiently integrative, disciplinary-dominated research. Finally, using two case studies—urban ecology and social–ecological research in Alaska—we highlight how interdisciplinary work is impeded when divergent epistemologies are not recognized and valued, and that by incorporating a pluralistic framework, these issues can be better explored, resulting in more integrated understanding.
The epistemology of educational policies: monitoring and epistemological positioning of the educational policies researcher  [cached]
César G. Tello
Práxis Educativa , 2012,
Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyze the category referred to as “epistemology of educational politics” as an approach that fosters the epistemological monitoring in the researches performed in this fi eld. This category necessarily leads the researcher todevelop a meta-analysis of his own investigation. Simultaneously, the approach of the epistemology of educational policies also becomes an adequate analytical framework for the epistemological studies of the fi eld, beyond the use of each researcher for his own epistemological monitoring during the development of his research. This analytical framework is derived from the concern that, in a signifi cant amount of the research on educational policies performed in Latin America, there is an absence of epistemological positioning. The production of knowledge in the fi eld unfolds in a methodological combination that is not based on epistemological perspectives, thus, the resulting investigations are presented as neutral and detached from the social and cultural reality.
Pluralism si multiculturalism/Pluralism and multiculturalism  [cached]
Sandu Frunza
Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies , 2004,
Abstract: The author focuses on several dimensions of multiculturalism as an ideology of pluralism and diversity. To this end, he uses a series of correlative terms, such as: diversity, autonomy, cultural canon, interculturalism. The affirmation of the cultural identity is shown to be a resource for participating to the public life, to the negotiation of the interests and for participating to the political process of decision-making. The author believes that the access to the public sphere presupposes the previous elaboration of special policies meant to guarantee the preservation of the alternative identities. Consequently, the educational policies are proved to be very important. An illustrative example is the multicultural model of Babes-Bolyai University from Cluj, Romania.
Contentious terrain in EU information society policies: Media pluralism and freedom of expression  [cached]
Miyase Christensen
MedieKultur : Journal of Media and Communication Research , 2008,
Abstract: In an EU context, the benefits attributed to new communication technologies are many: the creation of employment and economic growth; the enrichment of cultural/political dialogue and civic engagement; and, the permeation of a sense of European identity across the region. However, in the face of an increased emphasis on economic competitiveness both globally and at the EU policy level, there exists an unmistakable convergent approach to audiovisual/communications, cultural and competition policies. Parallel to this is an upsurge of concern—voiced by, for example, the European Parliament—over media pluralism and freedom of expression. Although the virtues of safeguarding “media pluralism” and “freedom of speech” in a healthy democracy are axiomatic, in the face of current dynamics, their meaning is widely contested. The purpose of this article is to offer an analysis of recent EU Information Society (IS) policies in relation to media pluralism and freedom of speech.

An epistemological reflection on the relevance of monastic traditions for retreat in the Dutch Reformed tradition  [cached]
C.H. (Kaaiman) Schutte,Yolanda Dreyer
HTS Theological Studies/Teologiese Studies , 2009, DOI: 10.4102/hts.v62i3.380
Abstract: The article focuses on retreat as a relatively new phenomenon in the Dutch Reformed tradition. Retreat is viewed as “communicative action”. The aim of the article is firstly to explore epistemological theories in the postmodern paradigm. These theories provide a mental framework for the identification of a research model and a related methodology by means of which the relevance of monastic traditions for retreat in the Reformed tradition can be discovered. The identification of appropriate theories offers an adequate model and method for entering into a narrative inter-dialogue with retreatants. The article argues that Paul Ricoeur’s concept of the hermeneutical arc, Hans-Georg Gadamer’s notion of the fusion of horizons, and Jürgen Habermas’ emphasis on symmetrical communication supply the necessary epistemological theories for such a project. From the perspective of this epistemology, the “action of retreat” is described in terms of a social constructionist model which paves the way for the method of qualitative interviewing. The project can be described as a narrative research journey.
The Relevance of Using Mathematical Models in Macroeconomic Policies Theory
Nora Mihail
Theoretical and Applied Economics , 2006,
Abstract: The article presents a look of the principal’s mathematical models – starting with Theil, Hansen and Tinbergen work – and their results used to analysis and design macroeconomic policies. In modeling field changes are very fast in theoretical aspects of modeling the many problems of macroeconomic policies and in using in practice the different political models elaboration. The article points out the problems of static and dynamic theory used in macro-policies modeling.

Semantic Resource Discovery with Resource Usage Policies in Grid Environment  [PDF]
Mandeep Kaur
International Journal of Computer Science Issues , 2012,
Abstract: Grid Schedulers aggregate the Grid resource that belongs to multiple administrative domains in a transparent manner. The Grid resource providers have their own local resources policies for the resources that reflects the restrictions on the resource what they are providing to the users. However, the Grid users are submitting the user application requirements with the Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. Currently, most of the existing Grid Schedulers discover the suitable Grid resources to execute the application based on the capability of the Grid resources using the keyword based matchmaking that leads to failure of finding out the potential resources. In this paper we have proposed the semantic based resource discovery mechanism that considers both the resource and local resource policy information. The proposed work is incorporated with semantic similarity calculator that will finds out the suitable and potential resources by considering the capability of resources and user required QoS parameter of deadline, job completion time and etc. It is integrated with the existing scheduler of Community Scheduling Framework (CSF) and tested for the various test cases in the real-time experimental setup. The various performance metrics such as hit/miss ratio, matchmaking time has been measured and analyzed. The results infer that the proposed work enhances the various performance measures compared to the conventional scheduler.
Efficient Resource Allocation in Resource provisioning policies over Resource Cloud Communication Paradigm  [PDF]
Gaurav Raj,Ankit Nischal
Computer Science , 2012, DOI: 10.5121/ijccsa.2012.2302
Abstract: Optimal resource utilization for executing tasks within the cloud is one of the biggest challenges. In executing the task over a cloud, the resource provisioner is responsible for providing the resources to create virtual machines. To utilize the resources optimally, the resource provisioner has to take care of the process of allocating resources to Virtual Machine Manager (VMM). In this paper, an efficient way to utilize the resources, within the cloud, to create virtual machines has been proposed considering optimum cost based on performance factor. This performance factor depends upon the overall cost of the resource, communication channel cost, reliability and popularity factor. We have proposed a framework for communication between resource owner and cloud using Resource Cloud Communication Paradigm (RCCP). We extend the CloudSim[2] adding provisioner policies and Efficient Resource Allocation (ERA) algorithm in VMM allocation policy as a decision support for resource provisioner.
