Sur le concept d’engagement  [cached]
Howard S. Becker
SociologieS , 2006,
On the Concept of CommitmentThe term "commitment" is experiencing a growing success in sociological debates. In this article, the author examines the uses of the concept of commitment in order to understand the reasons for its growing popularity. He also points out the nature of one of the social mechanisms to which the term implicitly refers, and he develops a preliminary theory of the social conditions and processes implied in the functioning of this mechanism. Given the semantic variety of the term, it proves useless to speculate on its “true” meaning. In order to clarify the meaning of the term, the author adopts one of the images evoked by “commitment”.

Iljina, Olga
Knygotyra , 2006,

Priti Jain
South African Journal of Libraries and Information Science , 2011, DOI: 10.7553/77-1-62
Abstract: The purpose of this small-scale study was to explore how people perceived Personal Knowledge Management (PKM), whether people were aware of the PKM concept, and how PKM can have an impact on organisational knowledge management and productivity. A questionnaire survey with quantitative and qualitative questions was used. The study revealed that a majority (63%) of respondents were not aware of the PKM concept; 33% were aware, while 2% had a vague idea about it. Eighty three (83%) felt that it was important to manage personal knowledge and that PKM could increase individual productivity and organisational performance. The major recommendations included creating awareness about PKM. It should be at the heart of each employee-development programme, alignment of personal and organisational goals and adequate facilities and training in PKM.

Personal history of my engagement with cuprate superconductivity, 1986-2010  [PDF]
Philip W Anderson
Physics , 2010, DOI: 10.1142/S0217979211057013
Abstract: Six months ago I was asked to write a personal history of my engagement with the high-Tc problem of the cuprate superconductors, in rather informal and autobiographical style. As the work proceeded I realized that it was impossible and would have been dishonest to separate out my rather amusing but seminal early fumblings from the complete restructuring of the problem which I have achieved during the past decade. But the result became considerably too long, by over half, for its intended recipient. The assignment had left me with no obligation to deal with all the fascinating but irrelevant phenomenology which I had more or less instinctively ignored on my way, but that feature also fails to endear the article to any conceivable editorial board containing knowledgeable experts on the subject. Also, their purpose was for it to serve as a (quote) introduction to the more technical debates, but its message is that almost all of these are not relevant. They are not, on the whole, focused on achieving understanding of the crucial experimental anomalies, many, if not most, of which are now understood. The key to the problem is a new method of dealing with the constrained Hilbert space which follows from the necessity of Gutzwiller projection.

Tubi? Tatjana,?or?i? Vi?nja,Po?ek Sun?ica
Psihologija , 2012, DOI: 10.2298/psi1202209t
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to examine the differences in particular dimensions of selfconcept in female and male adolescents depending on sports engagement, as well as to determine which domain-specific self-perceptions provide the highest contributions to global self-worth in female and male adolescents engaged in sport and those not engaged in it. This research included 400 subjects at early adolescent age, of both genders (235 females and 164 males) further divided to sub-samples of athletes and non-athletes. An adapted version of a scale Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents (Harter, 1988) was applied, which consists of nine subscales. The obtained results indicate that sport-engaged adolescents of both genders provide more favourable perception of themselves in most tested aspects of self-concept than those not engaged in an organized sports activity. Engagement in sport has special effect on selfconcept of male adolescents. Results of multiple regression analysis point out unambiguously the significance of self-perception of physical appearance in global self-worth of adolescents of both genders, irrespective of whether they are involved in sports activity or not.
Concept of risk and risk management
Ganiy Opeyemi Abdulrahman, Jnr
International Journal of Students' Research , 2011, DOI: 10.5549/ijsr.1.2.38-40
Abstract: Involvement of some individuals in risky behaviours such as unprotected sex, smoking and drug abuse is quite common. This has given rise to concepts such as ‘risk society’, ‘risk and identity’ and ‘risk management’. There are two forms of risk – external and internal. It is important to understand the concept of risk-taking and risk management, especially by the health professionals, because it facilitates the understanding of patients’ involvement in risk-taking behaviours and could also be helpful when health professionals formulate health policies. This paper discusses a number of reasons why some people engage in risky behaviours, sociological view on risk management as well as some occupational risks, with emphasis on internal risks.
How Facebook Connects Students’ Group Work Collaboration: A Relationship between Personal Facebook Usage and Group Engagement  [PDF]
Praweenya Suwannatthachote, Pornsook Tantrarungroj
Creative Education (CE) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2012.38B004
Abstract: This study examined the relationship between the personal value of social networking technology, the frequency of Facebook use, the frequency of Facebook activities, and group engagement. The samples were 205 pre-service teachers who participated in the six-week online group project. Questionnaires were collected after the pre-service teachers submitted the project. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis to identify relations among variables. The results showed that 98% of pre-service teachers expanded their network by adding group members to their Facebook friends during the project assignment. The study found no relationship between personal purposive values of social networking technology and group engagement. Although 58.4% of the students used Facebook many times a day, the frequency of usage was largely related to personal interests rather than being relevant to group communication and engagement with the project assignment. However, there were significant but slight correlations between the Facebook activity “view others’ status to update social events” and group engagement; between “private messages” and group engagement; between “set up and share events” and group engagement; between “commenting” and group engagement; and between “clicking like” and group engagement. Therefore, educators should integrate their instructional strategy with the virtual learning environment to promote students’ group engagement via social networking sites.
