An Exploration of the Canon of Hausa Prose Fiction in Hausa Language and Translation: The Literary Contest of 1933 as a Historical Reference  [PDF]

Abstract: The paper premises that the literary contest of 1933 has been a very important historical reference and a determining condition for the emergence of the canon of Hausa prose fiction (Furniss, 1991, 1996). As a consequence, my exploration is going to be directed first toward the role of the British colonial administration as the organizer of the literary contest and then toward the role played by the university critics in transforming the winning essays into a corpus of literary masterpieces, thus creating some of the conditions for the emergence and consolidation of the canon of the Hausa prose fiction in both the Hausa language and in translation into English.

Abstract: We modified classical mental exploration task introducing verbal modality. Consequently, we could test robust effects from lexical processing in an attempt to understand whether the underlying mental representation is strictly propositional. In our three experiments, in addition to map modality (visual or verbal), lexical frequency, concreteness and visual frequency were also varied. The symbolic distance effect was replicated, regardless of map modality. Exploration of distances was regularly faster on pictorial maps. Effects of lexical frequency and concreteness were not significant for verbal maps. However, when visual frequency was introduced on pictorial maps both type of frequencies generated measurable effects. Our findings directly contradict the assumptions of propositional theories (1) subjects were faster in the visual modality, which would be difficult to explain if the perceptual code had to be transformed into propositional, (2) word frequency and concreteness did not contribute as would be expected if propositional code were a default.

Abstract: Words\' meaning in languages relate to one another when the senses, ideas, and thoughts become associated. One way in which they can be associated is through inclusion of one meaning into another. A word\'s meaning that encompasses other meaning assumes the position of a general meaning, distinguishing itself from a specific one which essentially become inclusive. Hausa language is naturally far more to show an appreciable relationship between a word\'s general meaning and its specific than other languages. Besides the hierarchical relation of words\' meaning, Hausa words can also be seen to have an associate relationship of meaning. Abstract: This paper interrogates Yoruba verbal arts and situates culture as a catalyst for development. It is suggested that the intricate resources of oral art, exemplified by Yoruba textual references, are viable ingredients for socio-cultural empowerment. To fully comprehend the dynamics of a society in constant change due to external and internal realities, one must reconsider culture in order to reposition the society. The multidimensional and multidisciplinary significance of Yoruba verbal art demonstrate that culture has a vital role to play in any meaningful socio-political advancement in the Nigerian body polity. The ideas conveyed in proverbial expressions, representing key cultural realities of the Yoruba people, offer insights and ideas for development and social good. The paper submits that a deeper exploration of the intricate resources of verbal art is a viable route to development.

Abstract: : Hausa, a major language of West Africa, is one of the most widely studied languagesof Sub-Saharan Africa. It has a rich lexicographic tradition dating back some two centuries. Sincethe first major vocabulary published in 1843 up to the present time, almost 60 lexicographic works— dictionaries, vocabularies, glossaries — have been published, in a range of metalanguages, fromEnglish to Hausa itself. This article traces the historical development of the major studies accordingto their type and function as general reference works, specialized works, pedagogical works, andterminological works. The Influence of Rainfall on Hausa Traditional Architecture

Abstract: The present-day traditional architecture of a place usually results from solutions to climatic problems through reasoning, countless experiments, experiences and accidents as well. This usually takes the efforts and perseverance of generations of builders who make use of whatever works for them while discarding what did not. The purpose of this study is to discuss the influence of climate, particularly rainfall, on Hausa Traditional Architecture. The objective is to bring out how the nature of rainfall has influenced the choice of building and roofing material and the architectural design of building in traditional Hausa society. The study examined the extent of the Hausa states in Nigeria and the location of Zaria. This is followed by a discussion on the climatic conditions in Zaria; the influences of rainfall on mud construction of foundations, walls and roofs. The study concludes with an overview of the resultant effect of this element of climate on the future of Hausa Traditional Architecture, with recommendations aimed at salvaging the situation.
Verbal Aggressiveness and Argumentativeness in Physical Education: Perceptions of Teachers and Students in Qualitative and Quantitative Exploration  [PDF]

Abstract: This study is aiming at examining 1) physical education teachers’ self-perceived verbal aggressiveness and argumentativeness, 2) students’ perceptions about verbal aggressiveness and argumentativeness developed by their teachers, in order to assess the communicational accordance between students’ and teachers’ perceptions in elementary, junior and high schools. A combination of qualitative (study 1) and quantitative methods (study 2) has been implemented for this purpose. Fifteen PE teachers (6 females and 9 males), participated in the qualitative study; and 894 students (442 males, 452 females), participated in the quantitative study. According to the study 1, argumentativeness and verbal aggressiveness are features that co-exist to a person’s behavior. Five communicational PE teachers’ profiles have been detected (“high argumentativeness-low verbal aggressiveness” “moderate argumentativeness and verbal aggressiveness”, “moderate argumentativeness-low verbal aggressiveness”, “low argumentativeness-high verbal aggressiveness”, “low argumentativeness-moderate verbal aggressiveness”). According to these, PE teachers who are capable of arguing are less likely to expose a verbally aggressive behavior. Determinants of this are students’ behaviors, attitudes and disagreements or conflicts. When arguments are avoided, verbal aggressiveness is enhanced. Verbal aggressiveness plays the role of discipline. The prompt transition from argumentativeness to verbal aggressiveness is explained by the fact that teachers can’t interpret the difference between attacks on a position. According to the study 2, the findings supported the differences in verbal aggressiveness and argumentativeness between schools, showing at the same time students’ perceptions about their PE teachers. PE teachers’ reports about the perceived verbal aggressiveness and argumentativeness were aligned in the vast majority of the profiles with their students’ perceptions.

Abstract: In West African languages that have the relative TAM marking, i.e., a system of syntactically conditioned alternating TAM paradigms, it is generally considered that the paradigms in each alternating pair have necessarily the same meaning. This paper shows that in Hausa, the Completive, which appears in pragmatically neutral clauses, and the Relative Perfective, which appears in pragmatically marked clauses (such as relative clauses), have, respectively, a basic perfect and perfective semantics, and that in some marked cases the alternation is not possible. The paper also shows that the two paradigms have acquired derived uses in a way consistent with the results of typological studies in the domain of tense/aspect.

Abstract: The Hausa category of 'yan daudu offers a challenge to the simple dichotomy of male-female gender identities. These men are categorized as neither male nor female but as an ambiguous middle category. As such they challenge the rigid divisions of Hausa ideal culture between males and females. Examination offers insight into the categories of male-female and provides incentive for further research.
