Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692008000600008
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of prenatal care offered in 12 basic health units (bhu) in the city of sao paulo, brazil, through a review of medical and nurse charts, before and after the municipalization of the public health system. the indicator used considered excellence in care as: starting prenatal care in the first quarter of pregnancy; at least six medical visits; at least two results of blood screening for syphilis and one for hiv; returning to bhu up to 42 days after delivery. this indicator was not present in any care delivered in 2000, and only 7.7% of the care delivered in 2004 obtained it (1.1% to 30% of the care per unit assessed). although there was an evident improvement in care during the period, the low proportion of excellent prenatal care shows an urgent need to improve this care in the bhu of s?o paulo city.

Bando, Daniel Hideki;Scrivani, Hommenig;Morettin, Pedro Alberto;Teng, Chei Tung;
Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-44462009000200004
Abstract: objective: to evaluate suicide seasonality in the city of s?o paulo within an urban area and tropical zone. method: suicides were evaluated using the chi-square test and analysis of variance (anova) by comparing monthly, quarterly and half-yearly variations, differentiating by gender. analyses of time series were carried out using the autocorrelation function and periodogram, while the significance level for seasonality was confirmed with the fisher's test. results: the suicides of the period between 1979 and 2003 numbered 11,434 cases. differences were observed in suicides occurring in spring and autumn for the total sample (anova: p-value = 0.01), and in the male sample (anova: p-value = 0.02). for the analysis of time series, seasonality was significant only for the period of 7 months in the male sample (p-value = 0.04). discussion: in this study, no significant seasonal differences were observed in the occurrences of suicides, with the exception of the male sample. the differences observed did not correspond with the pattern described in studies carried out in temperate zones. some of the climatic particularities of the tropical zone might explain the atypical pattern of seasonality of suicides found in large populations within an urban area and tropical zone.
Care to the population: urban bus in the city of S o Paulo [paper in Portuguese]  [cached]
Carlos Paiva
Journal of Transport Literature , 2013,
Abstract: This paper analyzes the bus transportation mode in the city of S o Paulo based on data from the 2007 Origin and Destination Research(OD 2007), which allowed us to obtain the following information: 1) between 3 and 9% of the total trips in urban bus in the city of S o Paulo have origin or destination outside the city, what is very surprising, since these buses should not serve these sites; 2) South and northwest regions stood out as generators of bus rides and also had a significant increase in the number of auto trips to the expanded downtown area, possibly indicating some weakness in the public transportation system. The comparison of data from the 2007 OD with data bus lines (fleet, frequency, etc.) managed by S o Paulo Transportes - SPTrans also allowed us to construct indexes of service to the population and identify trip vectors (origin/destination pairs) with likely problems of care.

Abstract: Background Over the last century the incidence of cutaneous melanoma has increased worldwide, a trend that has also been observed in Brazil. The identified risk factors for melanoma include the pattern of sun exposure, family history, and certain phenotypic features. In addition, the incidence of melanoma might be influenced by ethnicity. Like many countries, Brazil has high immigration rates and consequently a heterogenous population. However, Brazil is unique among such countries in that the ethnic heterogeneity of its population is primarily attributable to admixture. This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of European ethnicity to the risk of cutaneous melanoma in Brazil. Methodology/Principal Findings We carried out a hospital-based case-control study in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo, Brazil. We evaluated 424 hospitalized patients (202 melanoma patients and 222 control patients) regarding phenotypic features, sun exposure, and number of grandparents born in Europe. Through multivariate logistic regression analysis, we found the following variables to be independently associated with melanoma: grandparents born in Europe—Spain (OR = 3.01, 95% CI: 1.03–8.77), Italy (OR = 3.47, 95% CI: 1.41–8.57), a Germanic/Slavic country (OR = 3.06, 95% CI: 1.05–8.93), or ≥2 European countries (OR = 2.82, 95% CI: 1.06–7.47); eye color—light brown (OR = 1.99, 95% CI: 1.14–3.84) and green/blue (OR = 4.62; 95% CI 2.22–9.58); pigmented lesion removal (OR = 3.78; 95% CI: 2.21–6.49); no lifetime sunscreen use (OR = 3.08; 95% CI: 1.03–9.22); and lifetime severe sunburn (OR = 1.81; 95% CI: 1.03–3.19). Conclusions Our results indicate that European ancestry is a risk factor for cutaneous melanoma. Such risk appears to be related not only to skin type, eye color, and tanning capacity but also to others specific characteristics of European populations introduced in the New World by European immigrants.

Oliveira,Mariana de Novaes; Martorell,Reynaldo; Phuong,Nguyen;
Archivos Latinoamericanos de Nutrición , 2010,
Abstract: like many other developing countries, brazil has been going a nutritional transition which presence both malnutrition and overweight. stunting and overweight are the major public health problems in brazilian children. the objective of this study was to document the prevalence of stunting, overweight and anemia in preschool children and examine if those nutritional problems are related; also identify if these nutritional problems have the same risk factors. data from the ?efficient daycare center project? which include 270 children attending nurseries of eight daycare centers in sao paulo city, brazil were used for this study. data on height and weight were converted to z-scores using who anthro software. hemoglobin (hb) concentrations were determined on finger-prick blood samples. the co-occurrence of stunting, overweight and anemia was investigated by contingency tables a log-linear model. univariate and multiple regression analyses were performed to estimate the association of haz, waz, whz and hb levels with their risk factors. the results showed high prevalence of overweight (22.2%), risk of stunting (22.6%) and anemia (37%). percent of daycare attendance, age, number of siblings under 5 years old and per capita income are associated with hb levels. this study provides evidence that brazil is going through a nutritional transition and suggest that the adoption of public policies to expand and improve services in daycare centers may help to prevent multi-nutritional problems in preschool children.

Abstract: the economic vigor of many countries is due to the success of small businesses. in brazil, sao paulo state concentrates more than half of brazilian small businesses. therefore, studies dealing with high or low performance of micro and small businesses are of great relevance. this study aims at presenting a quantitative and qualitative analysis of factors associated to premature mortality of micro and small businesses in the city of sao paulo. for the quantitative analysis of the sample, which is statistically significant, multivariate analysis was used. the main result of this investigation is that factors associated with mortality are mainly of strategic nature, contrary to the common belief that resource insufficiency is the main reason for the closing of small businesses. this result may contribute to guide public policies, entrepreneurs, and research funding agencies on the formulation of their strategies with regard to the development of managerial competencies and skills for the success of micro and small businesses in brazil.

Abstract: Facing the process of harmonization of international accounting standards, we tried to identify what is the demand of the job market in the city of S o Paulo for professionals specialized in International Accounting, and what are the requirements of technical knowledge, skills and competences required. By means of documentary research of job offers, looking for professionals with expertise in International Accounting, it was identified that the demand for professionals with expertise in North American accounting standards (GAAP), in 2007, was greater than the demand for expertise in international accounting standards (IFRS). But in 2008, this scene changed since the job market started to consider the future demand for professionals with expertise in international accounting standards (IFRS). With respect to technical knowledge, skills and competences required by the job market, we found that these are aligned with the recommendations of the international bodies. This alignment requires that the post-secondary education institutions pay attention to these requirements of the job market, which are valued for the accounting professional, when planning the curriculum for an Accounting course.
