Abstract: The characteristics of precursor variation before the M5.1 earthquake on July 4,2006,in Wenan of Hebei province is summarized.It is considered that the large number,completeness and acceleration of precursors are the characteristics of a coming strong earthquake.The geothermal variations at Sanmafang and Changping stations have the significance indicating the occuring time of Wenan earthquake.Through summarizing the precursor variations of Wenan earthquake,the necessities of synthetical prediction,precursor verification,precursor following and the further study are understanded.

The calculation of the precursor of the tectonic earthquake in the telluric current is carried out on the basis of the main equations of the telluric current and the theory of preparation of the tectonic earthquake. Results do not contradict data of field observations. Methodical significance of work is especially important.

Abstract: At first,the environment of seismic precursor occurrence,the relations betwen subsurface fluid action or subsurface fluid force and seismic precursor are analysed.Besides the occurrence process of seismic precursor anormalies in shallow crust and deep crust is expanded and exampled.Lastly,a view of seismic precursor from 'double force source' is further discussed,the main points are as follows:seismic precursor is the result from the action of 'double force source',namely tectonic stress and the subsurface fluid force which each other growth and decline produce different dynamic figure and seismic precursor anomalies;the tectonic stress is primary and the subsurface fluid force is modulating on the process of earthquake development and seismic precursor occurrence that may be occured only when the subsurface fluid force mechanicaly couplling with the tectonic stress of earthquake preparation on its enhancement process may modulate and induce earthquake precursor and promote earthquake occurrence.

Abstract: First the difference between the rock fracture and failure was analyzed and discussed from the definition and distinguishing criteria. Further we compared the sequences of rock fracture and earthquake, waveform recordings of fracture and earthquake, focal mechanism, stress drops of rock failure and fracture and stress drops of earthquake, rock breaking and the scaling ratio between the maximum dislocation and rupture length. It is affirmed that only taking the rock failure experiment to simulate the earthquake, especially the precursor study, is not enough, and with many shortcomings. Therefore it is suggested that taking the rock fracture to simulate the earthquake, especially for the precursor study. Thus fairly integrated seismicity patterns would be obtained. The precursor of the rock failure has been studied a lot. However the precursor of failure does not necessarily appear before a great fracture. Comparing with the failure, the precursor feature of the great fracture and its distinguishing can better reflect the complexity of the earthquake precursor and difficulty of the precursor distinguishing and are more suitable to the practicality. Meanwhile the shortcomings of taking the whole stick slip of the rock sample to simulate the earthquake, especially for the precursor study, are discussed. It is suggested that the local phenomenon, the precursor study of the great fracture (or stick slip) and the study of the forecast method should be strengthened.

Abstract: It's urgent to integrate the Ninth Five-year Plan digital precursor stations into the Tenth Five-year Plan precursor network after the completion of the Tenth Five-year network.Corresponding to different station conditions,four solutions are proposed to conveniently connect the Ninth Five-year Plan earthquake instruments to the Tenth Five-year Plan earthquake precursor network.Among them the special network interface solution has been applied in Baijiantuan earthquake station in Beijing and has quite an effect.

Abstract: The same frequency earthquake precursor information recored by many stations before earthquake can be got with wavelet analysis. A new earthquake prediction method procursor focus positioning method is formed by combing ball type theoretical source model. By making the review examination to the seven strong earthquakes which occurred in Yunnan province since 1995, it is found that the results are affirmative.

Abstract: Results published since the last three years on the observations of the precursor-like anomalies before the May 12, 2008, Wenchuan, 8.0 earthquake are collected and analyzed. These retrospective case studies would have provided heuristic clues about the preparation process of this inland great earthquake and the predictability of this destructive event if the standards for the rigorous test of earthquake forecast schemes were strictly observed. At least in some of these studies, however, several issues still need to be further examined to confirm or falsify the connection of the reported observations with the Wenchuan earthquake. Some of the problems are due to the inevitable limitation of observational infrastructure at the recent time, but some of the problems are due to the lack of communication about the test of earthquake forecast schemes. For the interdisciplinary studies on earthquake forecast, reminding of the latter issue seems of special importance for promoting the works and cooperation in this field.

Abstract:

Earthquake prediction thus far has proven to be a very difficult task, but changes in situ stress appear to offer a viable approach for forecasting large earthquakes in Tibet and perhaps other continental regions. High stress anomalies formed along active faults before large earthquakes and disappeared soon after the earthquakes occurred in the Tibetan Plateau. Principle stress increased up to ~2 - 5 times higher than background stress to form high stress anomalies along causative faults before the Ms 8.1 West Kunlun Pass earthquake in November 2001, Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake in May 2008, Ms 6.6 Nimu earthquake in October 2009, Ms 7.1 Yushu earthquake in April 2010 and the Ms 7.0 Lushan earthquake in April 2013. Stress near the epicenters rapidly increased 0.10 - 0.12 MPa over 45 days, ~8 months before the Ms 6.6 Nimu earthquake occurred. The high principle stress anomalies decreased quickly to the normal stress state in ~8 - 12 months after the Ms 8.1 West Kunlun Pass and the Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquakes. These high stress anomalies and their demise appear directly related to the immediate stress rise along a fault prior to the earthquakes and the release during the event. Thus, the stress rise appears to be a viable precursor in prediction of large continental earthquakes as in the Tibetan Plateau.

Introduction At least partly due to the tremendous loss of life and property and the intense social impact [1], the Wenchuan earthquake that occurred on May 12, 2008, in Sichuan Province of southwest China, has attracted widespread attention not only in seismological communities but also in other scientific communities. Since the occurrence of the Wenchuan earthquake, there have been some 300 papers published related to the precursor-like anomaly observations prior to this great earthquake, making it necessary for a systematic collection and comprehensive analysis of these materials. The necessity of such collection and analysis is further highlighted by the fact that over 3/4 of these publications are in Chinese with/without English abstract (with some of them being similar to, or just simply a repetition of the English publications) and quite a few of these publications are actually not known to international seismological communities. This is, similar to the situation of other developing countries [2], a characteristic of the scientific publications in China. In the study of earthquake forecast/prediction, China seems of special features in that earthquake forecast/prediction has been kept for a long time as a nationwide scientific goal, even if there were intense debates on the predictability of earthquakes in the international seismological communities [3]. From merely the number of papers published, the Wenchuan earthquake might be one of the special, or even unique, events with so many studies on its forecast or preshock anomalies. If
