Theory and Practice in Language Studies , 2011, DOI: 10.4304/tpls.1.7.802-810
Abstract: The focus of this paper is on a further investigation into the growing area of research in the idea of unreliability in literary studies. The paper seeks to examine the issue of unreliability with reference to Raymond Carver's seminal short story "What Do You Do in San Francisco?" The first part of the paper provides an overview of the contrasted key theoretical investigations into the concept of unreliability, and in the second part, I have made an analysis of Carver's story by applying the ideas of unreliability, mainly A. Nünning's cognitive model. Even with the publication of Booth's (1961, [1983]), narrative element assumes the central significance in narratology. In recent times, many theorists have taken issue with Booth and have even denounced some of the fundamental ideas propounded by Booth. Taking into cognizance both sides of the arguments, my paper, besides discussing the notion of unreliability, attempts a detailed analysis of Carver's narrative. In essence, the paper highlights how the foregrounded language of the surface of the story contributes to the reader's suspicion of the reliability of the narrator, thus forcing him/her to scrutinize its depth in an attempt to fathom an ample meaning.

Carver’s Cathedral and Celati’s Narratori delle pianure, two contemporaneous collections of short stories, use the “reserve strategy”: the stories relate minimal and, above all, indeterminate events whose cause we are unable to fathom. Jauffret’s Microfictions and Nove’s Woobinda, two other contemporaneous collections of short stories, use the “excess strategy”: the events are always very violent, but this violence doesn’t have an impact on the characters who have to undergo it. In the two situations, it’s a world without sense which appears throughout these brief texts.
An imaging ethos? Um ethos imagético?  [cached]

Abstract: An imaging ethos? — A possible correlation is made between Aristotelian rhetoric and Peirce's semiotics in an attempt to apprehend the circulation of images in contemporary society as a device to create an ethos from symbolic contents (logos) that are constitutive of social arguments.
A Case of Classic Raymond Syndrome

Case Reports in Neurological Medicine , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/583123
Abstract: Classic Raymond syndrome consists of ipsilateral abducens impairment, contralateral central facial paresis, and contralateral hemiparesis. However, subsequent clinical observations argued on the presentation of facial involvement. To validate this entity, we present a case of classic Raymond syndrome with contralateral facial paresis. A 50 year-old man experienced acute onset of horizontal diplopia, left mouth drooling and left-sided weakness. Neurological examination showed he had right abducens nerve palsy, left-sided paresis of the lower part of the face and limbs, and left hyperreflexia. A brain MRI showed a subacute infarct in the right mid-pons. The findings were consistent with those of classic Raymond syndrome. To date, only a few cases of Raymond syndrome, commonly without facial involvement, have been reported. Our case is a validation of classic Raymond syndrome with contralateral facial paresis. We propose the concept of two types of Raymond syndrome: (1) the classic type, which may be produced by a lesion in the mid-pons involving the ipsilateral abducens fascicle and undecussated corticofacial and corticospinal fibers; and (2) the common type, which may be produced by a lesion involving the ipsilateral abducens fascicle and undecussated corticospinal fibers but sparing the corticofacial fibers.

Introduction Classic Raymond syndrome, named after a French neurologist Fulgence Raymond, consists of ipsilateral abducens impairment, contralateral central facial paresis, and contralateral hemiparesis [1]. However, subsequent clinical observations argued on the presentation of facial involvement [2]. To validate this entity, we present a case of classic Raymond syndrome with contralateral facial paresis. 2. Case Report A 50-year-old man with hypertension, congestive heart failure, and polysubstance abuse (cocaine, cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana) experienced three days of acute onset of horizontal diplopia, left mouth drooling, and left-sided weakness. On examination he had right abducens nerve palsy, left-sided central paresis of the lower part of the face and limbs, and left hyperreflexia. Pupils were equal, round, and reactive to light and accommodation. He did not exhibit ptosis. There was no muscle tenderness. Sensation was normal and intact. Cerebellar coordination exam was normal on the right but limited on the left due to weakness. The findings were consistent with those of classic Raymond syndrome [1] with facial nerve involvement. A brain MRI at 5 days after the onset of the symptoms showed a subacute infarct in the right midpons

Abstract: A current research on the local and regional culture is given in ETHOS DO PIONEIRO (Northern Pa-rand Frontier's Ethos). The definition of the pioneer from the local society point of view is been found. A systematization of person to person social interaction between the so-called "pioneers" to identify a process of social differentiation, in which the "pioneer" ethos was enrolled — by age, sex, and class - is made possible. The advertising media for the colonization company that undertook the settlement of the region was synthesized, analyzed, and compared. Some sources of information on the Northern Parana region are pointed out.

The Ethos of Cost Management
Sorinel Capusneanu
Theoretical and Applied Economics , 2008,
Abstract: This article describes the ethos of cost management, distinguishing the definition, functions and principles governing cost management. I have emphasized the efforts made by the specialists in the field towards finding a much more complete definition of cost management. The description of cost management principles reveals the current interest of the specialists in this extremely important domain of company management.
