THE SOCIO-SPATIAL DIMENSION OF THE BUCHAREST GHETTOS
Viorel MIONEL,Silviu NEGU?
Transylvanian Review of Administrative Sciences , 2011,
Abstract: Based on a socio-spatial analysis, this paper aims at drawing the authorities’ attention on a few Bucharest ghettos that occurred after the 1990s. After the Revolution, Bucharest has undergone many socio-spatial changes. The modifications that occurred in the urban perimeter manifested in the technical and urban dynamics, in the urban infrastructure, and in the socio-economic field. The dynamics and the urban evolution of Bucharest have affected the community life, especially the community homogeneity intensely desired during the communist regime by the occurrence of socially marginalized spaces or ghettos as their own inhabitants call them. Ghettos represent an urban stain of color, a special morphologic framework. The Bucharest “ghettos” appeared by a spatial concentration of Roma population and of poverty in zones with a precarious infrastructure. The inhabitants of these areas (Z br u i, Aleea Livezilor, Iacob Andrei, Amurgului and Valea Cascadelor) are somehow constrained to live in such spaces, mainly because of lack of income, education and because of their low professional qualification. These weak points or handicaps exclude the ghetto population from social participation and from getting access to urban zones with good habitations.

Theoretical and Applied Economics , 2011,
Abstract: In a world where, lately, on one hand, more destinations can be “replaced” one for the other and the tourists’ desire to find a mean of expressing their own identities (Morgan, Pritchard, 2004, pp. 50-80) is more and more evident, and, on the other hand, the image is gradually replacing the identity, leads to the fact that the authenticity of every single aspect that one community has needs to be assessed and reassessed from an economical and socio-cultural point of view.

Romanian Journal of Regional Science , 2009,
Abstract: The undergoing concerns for local and regional development focus also on the territorial analyses. The local socio-economic analysis is naturally followed by the strategic planning of development during which the local public authorities initiate and organize, locally, the economic development of the respective territorial unit. This article is intended to analyze a concrete case, that of the Capital City of Romania, the Municipality of Bucharest. One of Romania’s objectives is to sensitize and educate the civil society, the private organizations and the public authorities towards understanding and observing the urban landscape. In the spirit of the aspects mentioned above, the authors have presented a case study, at the end of this article, in which the reconsideration of the urban architectural framework matches perfectly with the wish of introducing elements of spatial dynamics and of balance. In this spirit, the over-crowded City of Bucharest, which has a density of 9009 inhabitants/sq.km, will potentially be turned into an oasis of social comfort that will positively influence the urban organism.

Facta Universitatis Series : Architecture and Civil Engineering , 2004, DOI: 10.2298/fuace0401041m
Abstract: A city center is a starting and end point of numerous and various movements of a city, so called "basic paths focus". Therefore, it is strained by the tensions of the centrifugal and centripetal courses of the city and its denizens. The center unifies variety of high and low level activities, and concentrates the characteristics of a wider area and imposes a high degree of social communication and contact. In each city tissue, the center represents the most attractive and unique ambient unit, due to a high concentration of various activities taking place in it. The center regardless of its characteristics, functions and category, exists only as a part of an urban system - it is functionally connected to the gravity area and structurally to the city as a system.

Transport Problems : an International Scientific Journal , 2008,
Abstract: The paper represents some partial results of the research carried out by the Transportation, Traffic and Logistics Department - University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest, funded by the Romanian Ministry of Research and Education through the National University Research Council. In this paper we provide: a brief description of the interrelation between the life style changes of Romanian people during the last decades and the car traffic congestion in large cities; the streets network modelling of a radial-circular urban structure (the characteristic of a historically developed city as Bucharest city is), in case of car traffic congestion; the assessment model of the additional car traffic congestion for certain locations with large attractivity. Having an important effect on the entire lifestyle of urban people, the decision of a hypermarket location might be a complex one, taking into consideration the new leisure and shopping tendencies but also the additional car traffic congestion caused by the chosen location.
THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE SOURCES OF ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION IN DISTRICT 4, CITY OF BUCHAREST, IN RELATION WITH THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT
Cornelia Dinc?
Present Environment and Sustainable Development , 2008,
Abstract: The pollution sources produce noxious emissions, harmful to the environment and the public health. District 4 of the city of Bucharest is considered to be very polluted due to factors such as industry, heavy traffic, building sites, thermoelectric power plants, sources of diffusive combustion, and also the reduction of green spaces. These sources produce both noxious emissions and noise pollution. The air contamination, the water and soil pollution contribute to the deterioration of public health. Keeping a record of all the pollution sources, being aware of all their characteristics and the emissions they produce, as well as keeping them under strict control can be considered the necessary premises for maintaining a satisfying quality of the environment.
