IDESIA , 2013,
The city of Iquique, located in the northern Chilean Region ofTarapacá, has been investigated in January-February 2012, by a joint Portuguese-Chilean team. The main aim of the fieldwork was the evaluation of the medicinal flora used by local residents, as an option or for having no access to conventional medicine. This research is part of an ongoing project developed in the Portuguese Tropical Institute of Lisbon from the end of last century onwards, aimed at assessing the weight of the native American species used in herbal remedies, all over Latin America. So far a total of ten cities have been researched in the New World, and Iquique has been selected to document the urban cultivation of healing plant species in a desert environment.
Hinojosa Ramos, Miguel Angel,Romero Palacios, Eulalia.
Rect@ , 2003,

Fernando de Castro and the discovery of the arterial chemoreceptors  [PDF]

Abstract: When De Castro entered the carotid body (CB) field, the organ was considered to be a small autonomic ganglion, a gland, a glomus or glomerulus, or a paraganglion. In his 1928 paper, De Castro concluded: “In sum, the Glomus caroticum is innervated by centripetal fibers, whose trophic centers are located in the sensory ganglia of the glossopharyngeal, and not by centrifugal [efferent] or secretomotor fibers as is the case for glands; these are precisely the facts which lead to suppose that the Glomus caroticum is a sensory organ”. A few pages down, De Castro wrote: “The Glomus represents an organ with multiple receptors furnished with specialized receptor cells like those of other sensory organs [taste buds?]…As a plausible hypothesis we propose that the Glomus caroticum represents a sensory organ, at present the only one in its kind, dedicated to capture certain qualitative variations in the composition of blood, a function that, possibly by a reflex mechanism would have an effect on the functional activity of other organs… Therefore, the sensory fiber would not be directly stimulated by blood, but via the intermediation of the epithelial cells of the organ, which, as their structure suggests, possess a secretory function which would participate in the stimulation of the centripetal fibers”. In our article we will recreate the experiments that allowed Fernando de Castro to reach this first conclusion. Also, we will scrutinize the natural endowments and the scientific knowledge that drove De Castro to make the triple hypotheses: the CB as chemoreceptor [variations in blood composition], as a secondary sensory receptor which functioning involves a chemical synapse, and as a centre, origin of systemic reflexes. After a brief account of the systemic reflex effects resulting from the CB stimulation, we will complete our article with a general view of the cellular-molecular mechanisms currently thought to be involved in the functioning of this arterial chemoreceptor.
Os Objetos ativos de Willys de Castro
Silva, Renato Rodrigues da;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142006000100017
Abstract: willys de castro has developed the objetos ativos (1959-1962) during the neoconcrete phase. in accordance with ferdinand de saussure's linguistics and jacques derrida's concept of "deconstruction", this article supports the idea that the originality of this series of objects is based on the inscription of "signs". thus, the visual and semantic analysis of the artist's discoveries - such as the "positive-negative motif" and the emphasis on the tridimensionality of the support, achieved in soma entre planos i (1959), objeto ativo de 1959, objeto ativo de 1960 and objeto ativo de 1962 - shows that these signs represent consecutive changes of pictorial and sculptural readings. we conclude that the unity of these works is found in the convergence to the "paradigm of perspective" to decline the correlative versions of painting and sculpture.
Political action and social thought in Josue de Castro  [PDF]
Maria Letícia Galluzzi Bizzo
Boletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ciências Humanas , 2009,
Abstract: The paper analyses central points of the social thought and political action of physician Josué de Castro (1908-1973) between1930 and 1950 decades. It aims to problematize social-cognitive categories present in the construction of his idea of ‘hunger’, aswell as convergences with other thought sets. Analysis of four Castro’s publications has been conducted, as well as an analysis ofmaterials published by peer authors, which were supplemented by historiographical reviewing, and examination of key-elementsof his career as a deputy and founder of hunger-fighting institutions. Castro’s scientific-political-intellectual career has been centered in the idea of ‘hunger’ as a bio-social phenomenon that identifies the Brazilian condition, is the source of the Brazilian defects, hampers the nationality, and requires modernizing economic-social reforms. Categories detectable in the field of the Brazilian social thought are also present: semi-feudal colonialist latifundiary monoculture, irrational State, and supremacy of the public over the private. Among the ideas in common with international nutrition science, the bio-social concern with public feeding is present. Castro’s scientific-intellectual production becomes possible particularly because of the Sate-construction scenery, and is characterized by his relationships with institutions, governing authorities and international organisms. His political and social commitment materializes itself through his scientific ideas, making hunger visible as a scientific-political issue.

Abstract: WILLYS DE CASTRO desenvolveu os Objetos ativos (1959-1962) durante o período neoconcreto.
