Abstract: the selectivity of sixteen pesticides used in integrated and conventional peach production was evaluated on adults of chrysoperla externa (hagen,1861) (neuroptera: chrysopidae) under bioassays in laboratory conditions (temperature of 25±1oc, relative humidity 70±10% and 14 hours photophase), using the "international organization for biological control" (iobc) methodology. the pesticides (% active ingredient) azoxystrobin (0.016), captan (0.192), dodine (0.126), pholpet (0.200), mancozeb (0.256), mancozeb + cooper oxichloride (0.140 + 0.096), tebuconazole (0.320), abamectin (0.002), mineral oil 1 (2.420), mineral oil 2 (1.920), paraquat dichloride (0.300) and gliphosate (1.440) were harmless; deltametrin (0.002) was slightly harmful and dimetoate (0.160), phosmet (0.160) and malathion (0.240), were harmful to c. externa adults.

Abstract: the effect of some insecticides on eggs of two populations of chrysoperla externa (hagen, 1861) (neuroptera: chrysopidae) were evaluated under laboratory conditions (25±2°c, rh of 70±10% and 12 hours-photophase). the compounds were used at commercial or research concentrations used to control oriental fruit moth, leaf roller and fruit fly on apple orchards. the products and rates (g ou ml of formulated product 100l-1 of water) evaluated were: phosmet (imidan 500 pm - 200), methoxyfenozide (intrepid 240 sc - 60), tebufenozide (mimic 240 sc - 60), emamectin benzoate (proclain 5 sg - 15), spinosad (tracer 480 sc - 20), etofenprox (trebon 100 sc - 150) and chlorpyrifos (lorsban 480 br - 150), using water as control. spraying of insecticides was on eggs (12 hours old) using the potter tower. survival and the period of the developmental stages were evaluated from treated eggs to the second-instar larvae, according to the iobc recommendations. both c. externa populations showed similar results for compounds applied. phosmet, methoxyfenozide, tebufenozide, emamectin benzoate, spinosad and etofenprox were harmless, whereas chlorpyrifos was slightly harmful to c. externa, killing 43,7% of the eggs and 20% of the first-instar larvae from the treated eggs.

Efecto de dietas artificiales en la biología de adultos de chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) (neuroptera: chrysopidae)

Abstract: Se evaluó bajo condiciones de laboratorio el efecto de ocho dietas sobre la biología de adultos de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) con el fin de determinar una dieta artificial barata y efectiva. Una dieta estándar con levadura y siete constituidas por maca (Lepidium meyenii Walpers), soya (Glycine max (Linnaeus) Merril) y kiwicha (Amaranthus caudatus Linnaeus); en las siguientes combinaciones: levadura y maca; levadura y kiwicha; levadura y soya; levadura, maca y kiwicha; levadura, maca y soya; levadura, soya y kiwicha; y levadura, maca, soya y kiwicha fueron evaluadas con respecto a la biología de adultos de C. externa. Todas las dietas contenían miel de abejas, polen y agua. Se evaluó la influencia de las dietas de los adultos en la viabilidad de los huevos, capacidad de oviposición, ritmo de oviposición, periodo de pre-oviposición, periodo de oviposición, periodo de post-oviposición de las hembras y longevidad de hembras y machos, durante dos generaciones de C. externa. Las ocho dietas evaluadas obtuvieron una elevada viabilidad de huevos en condiciones de laboratorio. Sin embargo, las dietas estandarizada a base de levadura, levadura + kiwicha, y soya + kiwicha obtuvieron una más alta viabilidad de huevos. Las dietas a base de levadura, levadura + maca, levadura + kiwicha, y a base de maca y kiwicha fueron con las que se obtuvo la mayor capacidad de oviposición. En general, no existieron diferencias significativas entre los periodos de preoviposición, oviposición y post-oviposición bajo las ocho dietas artificiales para C. externa, con tendencia a ser más altos en la segunda generación. Las dietas de levadura con maca, levadura, maca, soya y kiwicha permitieron un aumento en la longevidad de las hembras y machos para la segunda generación.

Abstract: Neste trabalho, foi avaliado o efeito de inseticidas sobre ovos de duas popula es de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). O trabalho foi realizado em laboratório (25?2degreesC, UR de 70?10% e fotofase de 12 horas) avaliando-se inseticidas, nas concentra es indicadas pelos fabricantes e/ou que est o em fase de pesquisa para o controle da mariposa-oriental, lagarta-enroladeira e mosca-das-frutas na cultura da macieira. Os produtos e dosagens (g ou mL do p.c. 100L-1 de água) avaliados foram: fosmet (Imidan 500 PM - 200), metoxifenozide (Intrepid 240 SC - 60), tebufenozide (Mimic 240 SC - 60), benzoato de emamectina (Proclaim 5 SG - 15), spinosad (Tracer 480 SC - 20), etofenprox (Trebon 100 SC - 150), clorpirifós etil (Lorsban 480 BR - 150) e testemunha (somente água). As pulveriza es foram realizadas em ovos com até 12 horas de idade, utilizando-se torre de Potter. Avaliaram-se a viabilidade dos ovos, o período embrionário, e a sobrevivência das larvas de primeiro e segundo estádios provenientes dos ovos tratados. A toxicidade dos produtos foi determinada em fun o da mortalidade acumulada do predador durante o seu desenvolvimento, classificando-os conforme escala proposta pela IOBC. As duas popula es de C. externa apresentaram o mesmo padr o de resposta aos produtos fitossanitários avaliados quando aplicados sobre ovos. Fosmet, metoxifenozide, tebufenozide, benzoato de emamectina, spinosad e etofenprox foram considerados inócuos, e clorpirifós etil levemente nocivo a ovos de C. externa, provocando a redu o de 43,7% na viabilidade dos ovos e afetando em 20% a sobrevivência das larvas de primeiro estádio originadas dos ovos tratados.

Para larvas de primeiro ínstar do crisopídeo oriundas de Bento Gon alves, benzoato de emamectina, foi classificado como inofensivo (classe 1); metoxifenozide, etofenprox, tebufenozide, spinosad e fosmet, como levemente nocivos (classe 2) e clorpirifós, como nocivo (classe 4). Já para a popula o larval de C. externa de Vacaria, benzoato de emamectina, metoxifenozide, etofenprox, tebufenozide e spinosad foram inofensivos; fosmet mostrou-se moderadamente nocivo (classe 3) e clorpirifós foi nocivo.

Abstract: It was aimed to study biological and behavior aspects of larvae and adults of Chrysoperla externa in greenhouse, on cotton plants. Recently hatched larvae were released on the upper third of cotton plants, which were previously infested with Aphis gossypii,. After emergence, adults were separated by sex and packed in cylindrical PVC recipients with cotton plant. We evaluated the duration of each larval, pre-pupal and pupal periods, pre-oviposition, oviposition, effective oviposition and post-oviposition periods, male and female logevity, daily and total oviposition capacity. The behavior of pupal stage was also evaluated, which released three larvae of the 3rd instar per cotton plant and they were put on the lower, medium and upper sections. As treatments, it was used naked soil, dried leaves from cotton plant, crushed rock no 1; and crushed rock no 1 + dried leaves. Larvae from different instars were released on the upper section of the cotton plants infested with A. gossypii to verify the search timing that marked the period the prey was exposed to the predator. C. externa larvae passed through all the phases of their biological cycle and there was no significant influence on the type of the soil covering used on pupal stage, since all of them were significantly higher on naked soil. There was no significative difference on the prey search by C. externa larvae. Objetivou-se estudar aspectos biológicos e comportamentais de larvas e adultos de Chrysoperla externa em casa-de-vegeta o, em plantas de algod o. Larvas recém eclodidas foram liberadas no ter o superior de plantas de algod o previamente infestadas com Aphis gossypii, onde permaneceram até a pupa o. Após a emergência, adultos foram separados por sexo, acondicionados em recipientes cilíndricos de PVC contendo uma planta de algodoeiro. Avaliaram-se a dura o de cada ínstar, dos períodos larval, pré-pupal e pupal, dos períodos de pré-oviposi o, oviposi o, efetivo de oviposi o, pós-oviposi o, longevidade de machos e fêmeas, capacidade diária e total de oviposi o. O comportamento de pupa o foi avaliado liberando-se três larvas de terceiro ínstar por planta de algod o, colocando-as no ter o inferior, médio e superior. Os tratamentos foram: solo nu, folhas secas de algodoeiro, brita no 1 e brita no 1 + folhas secas. Para se avaliar o tempo de busca, larvas nos diferentes ínstares, foram liberadas no ter o superior de plantas de algod o infestadas com A. gossypii, cronometrando-se o tempo em que a presa ficou exposta ao predador. Abstract: searching and handling time of chrysoperla externa (hagen, 1861) (neuroptera, chrysopidae) larvae fed on uroleucon ambrosiae (thomas, 1878) (hemiptera, aphididae). the objective of this research was to determine the searching and handling times of three larval instars of c. externa fed on u. ambrosiae at densities of 30, 40 and 50 per vial, with the feeding of the larvae at the preceding instars being u. ambrosiae nymphs or sitotroga cerealella (olivier, 1819) eggs. the larvae were maintained at 25 ± 2 oc, 70 ± 10% rh and a 14-h photophase. a completely randomized design in a 6 x 3 factorial scheme with 12 replicates was adopted. the shortest searching time was found for the 2nd and 3rd instar larvae of c. externa, and this parameter was variable depending on the feeding given to the larvae previously. the handling time was similar for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd instar larvae. the longest searching time was found at an aphid density of 30, as compared to densities of 40 and 50 prey, with which there were no significant differences. prey density did not have any influence on handling time.

Abstract: feeding potential of chrysoperla externa (hagen) (neuroptera, chrysopidae) in different densities of uroleucon ambrosiae (thomas) (hemiptera, aphididae). the feeding potential of 2nd and 3rd instar larvae of chrysoperla externa (hagen, 1861) in relation to different densities of 30, 40 and 50 nymphs of uroleucon ambrosiae (thomas, 1878) at 3rd and 4th instars was evaluated. the treatments were individualized into 2.5 cm in diameter and 8.5 cm tall flat bottom glass vials and maintained in a controlled environmental chamber at 25±2 oc temperature, 70±10% rh and 14 h photophase. a completely randomized experimental design with 10 replications was used. the consumption of the prey nymphs by the predator larvae was evaluated after 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 24 h from the beginning of the experiment and at every subsequent 24 h period until 2nd instar larvae molted or 3rd instar larvae pupated. results have shown that for 2nd instar larvae, during the 1 h to 24 h period, there was a decreasing prey consumption at the 30 and 40 prey densities. however an increase in the consumption at the 50 prey density was observed. after this period, c. externa larvae presented a progressive increase on nymphs consumption as a function of the prey density. the same occurred with de 3rd instar predator larvae in all treatments. when daily mean consumption was evaluated the predator/prey ratio was 1:23, 1:27 and 1:33 for 2nd instar larvae and 1:27, 1:33 and 1:41 for 3rd instar larvae at 30, 40 and 50 nymph densities, respectively.
