The Appearance of the Rural in China's Tourism
Jenny Chio
Provincial China , 2011,
Abstract: State-led programs for rural development through tourism serve to reaffirm and reinstate rural spaces as the ideal periphery, a desirable and attractive ‘decorative edge’ to the modern, contemporary Chinese nation. By tracing the ways in which tourism development both centralizes the necessity of modernizing rural regions for the nation as a whole while simultaneously emphasizing the otherness of rural communities in order to promote them as tourist attractions, I seek to understand how the rural appears in Chinese tourism as a central concern of the state, and yet the approach of development programs has been to characterize what is rural as evermore different and distant in order to satisfy perceived tourist desires. The focus of the chapter is the examination of two publications that deal specifically with the formation, significance, and regulation of ‘the rural’ in tourism development: a widely circulated statement from 2006 by the chairman of the China National Tourism Administration, Shao Qiwei, and a guidebook on operating rural tourism businesses by the China Agricultural Press. My analysis considers the practices and ideas suggested by these publications in light of ethnographic observations from two rural ethnic tourism villages.

Mei-Ying Lan, Ta-An Hung
Open Access Library Journal (OALib Journal) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/oalib.1105141
In recent years, China’s package group tours have a strong consumption capacity, which is conducive to the integration of various industries. In particular, package group tours in leisure agriculture are different from traditional tourism development and package group tours are developing rapidly. Among them, leisure agriculture in the context of collective tourism is conducive to market demand, and on the other hand, it becomes a new type of agricultural production and tourism and tourism because of the needs of rural economic development. However, since the implementation of the “New Tourism Laws” in China in 2013, travel agencies have been banned from arranging shopping trips, which will have an impact on the development of leisure agriculture and rural tourism. Through literature review, this study analyzes the significance of developing leisure agriculture in the context of current package group tours in China. According to the typical case analysis of rural tourism in China, we found the main problems of the new tourism laws in the process of China’s leisure agricultural tourism planning, as a mirror for the future development of leisure agriculture. This study also proposes countermeasures and suggestions for the future development path of China’s leisure agriculture under the new tourism laws.

Enlightening Tourism : a Pathmaking Journal , 2011,
Abstract: The study of rural tourism has been addressed from different perspectives, such as geography, sociology, psychology, economics, business management, tourism marketing, etc. This positions it as a multidisciplinary research field of great interest which is growing in strategic importance. However it requires appropriate tools to improve its performance and become more professional. The level of interest it now produces is palpable in the quantitative increase in the attention devoted to it in the scientific literature over recent years. Nevertheless there is a need to improve the quality of this research effort, especially in fields related to economics and the management of businesses and even more so with regard to issues related to marketing, all of which would contribute to a better understanding of issues such as the planning, management and marketing of these destinations and businesses. This paper is an analysis of rural tourism as an area of scientific research that aims to classify the most relevant topics in the field, with particular reference to those that focus on marketing and market research. Its main contribution is a proposal of a research agenda for the coming years.
