Nirmana , 2008,
Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia: Baudrillard is one of postmodernist theorists that criticize the unreality of the culture which we live in. He suggests that human interactions with virtual reality media and unreal technologies, achieve nothing; He even fears that society will fall prey to these media subjectivity. The virtual reality media capability to produce simulated reality could mislead society into voluntary detachment with the real world. The latest development in virtual technology has made it available within the consumer market in the form of augmented reality application. An application based on a concept that merges virtual data within the physical environment, a different approach compared to common virtual reality technology where user is immersed within a virtual environment. Instead of detachment, augmented reality offers attachment with reality. While it is still too early to study augmented reality technology’s impact on society, a study on Baudrillard’s critiques will nevertheless gives a valuable insight on how designers could make use of augmented reality technology to shape society with a

This text aims to reflect on the relations between communication and consumption by taking as reference the books of Jean Baudrillard: The System of Objects, The Consumer Society and For a Critique of Political Economy of the Sign, which are representative of transition period when the author tries to combine the theories of the sign with the Marxist critics of capitalism. From a theoretical standpoint, Marxism is replaced by semiotics, and from the social point of view, technique and consumption have become central to people’s lives. From there, we try to analyze the theoretical relevance of these approaches, considering the media society.

The first section of the article is introduced to the meaning and problematicity of the concept of civilization, analyzing the connections between the concepts of civilization and culture. The second section discusses traditional French concept of civilization. The third section analyzes and interprets the conception of hypercivilization of Baudrillard. Abstract: The rise of the second phase of capitalism after World War II is contemporaneous with the increase in information production and the ubiquity of mass media. The incessant play of signs and images in the groundless cyberspace fuels the erosion of referentiality and reality in our mediagoverned era. The consequent absence of reality, as Baudrillard argues, is masked through the simulation of natural reality and generation of cultural hyperreality. The present paper aims at examining various levels of hyperreality in Brian Moore’ s novel, The Great Victorian Collection (1975), in the light of Jean Baudrillard’s comments. The mutation of the real into hyperreal and its subsequent reproduction in this novel threatens the authenticity of the notions of art and history. A central concern here is to show how the protagonist of the novel becomes the creation of his own creation by surrendering his subjectivity and agency to the hyperreality of films and photos. Key words: Jean Baudrillard; Brian Moore; The Great Victorian Collection; Hyperrelity; Reproduction; Mass media; Originality

Meta : Research in Hermeneutics, Phenomenology and Practical Philosophy , 2011,
Abstract: This paper is a fragmented exploration of Jean Baudrillard’s theory of consumption, one that belongs to his early writings. Even though they became commonplaces inside the analysis of contemporary society, themes such as the (meta)consumption, the daily life or the (symbolic) evolution of advertising have not lost their theoretical and interpretive potential. Thus, my reading of Baudrillard’s work has a double stake. First, I want to see to what extent Baudrillard’s ideas fit a more general model of interpretation that is to be found in the writings of other French contemporary philosophers, as well. Second, I am interested in the way the development of the theory of consumption makes Baudrillard see a few cracks in the fa ade of some important hermeneutical filters.

Antrocom : Online Journal of Anthropology , 2010,
Abstract: Undoubtedly, the fear can be seen a grounding emotion broadly studied by psychology, sociology and anthropology for many years. Every end of millennium represents for human beings a new embodiment of their beliefs, their production, forms of consumption and even their hierarchical lines of authority. As privileged witnesses of the starting of a new millennium, one might realize how the sentiment of unprotection has been disseminated as a virus world-wide. Ranging from appalling events such as 11/09 towards the Swine Flu recently appeared in Mexico, the perception of lay-people of what is or not dangerous seem to be changed for-ever. Under such a context, the present theoretical manuscript explores the connection of risk and fear at the time it delves into the main contributions and limitations of Jean Baudrillard, Anthony Giddens, Robert Castel, Ulrich Beck and Zygmunt Bauman. From different angles, every-one of cited scholars will give to reader an insight view of the role played by risk and fear in our modern society.
