Abstract: Beaches and other coastal ecosystems were always considered recreational places with high aesthetic value. In Brazil these ecosystems were the first places that had attracted the formers Environmental Educators’ attention. The huge relation between researchers and study subjects, approached marine environmental researchers as oceanographers and biologists for educational activities, aimed to environmental conservation. These activities since 1980’s had consolidated important projects along all Brazilian coastline, so that, most of them with great community involvement, attaining national expression. These examples state the great historical binding among Environmental Education (E.E.) and environmental workers, which stills exists until now. Despite the law advances, the Environmental Education is being introduced at the Brazilian college, with a historical delay. The insertion in to basic and highschool educational system generally makes part of widespread initiatives, without support of formal projects and also theoretical and methodological background. Within this scenario highlights the importance of social function of University as into the academic knowledge development, as than into technical support for insertion of E.E. into the highschool and basic levels. This responsibility withstands with the great lack of graduating courses in E.E. in Brazil and a needing of carrying out E.E. into the academic place such as knowledge field, researching subject and teaching. In this point of view, the Environmental Education Laboratory – Laboratório de Educa o Ambiental / LEA – of UNIVALI, located at the Center of Technological Science of Earth and Sea (CTTMar), is helping out the insertion of E.E. into the University curriculum. At the present it’s working out within courses at the environmental sciences area, producing and spreading out experiments and pedagogic practices in E.E. at the coastal zone and performing of partnerships with community based social movements, and social groups, such as Environmental NGO’s, and also city halls in to the center-north area of Santa Catarina state coastal zone.

Abstract: A monkfish (Lophius gastrophysus) fishery developed in southern Brazil during 2001 through the multispecific deep-water operations (>100 m depth) of a national trawling fleet and through the gill net fishing operations conducted by a specialized chartered foreign fleet. Due to the increasing interest in such resource, the Department of Fishing and Aquaculture (Ministry of Agriculture) launched a management initiative that included (a) the collection of biological and technological information, (b) the assessment of the stock and the fishery, (c) the public debate of these assessments with the Brazilian fishing industry, government and scientists and, finally, (d) the definition of management actions for the 2002 fishing season within a Permanent Committee established for the management of deep-water demersal resources (Ministry of Agriculture). The present work summarizes this management initiative mostly conducted by CTTMar-UNIVALI fishery science group under a scientific cooperation program with the Ministry of Agriculture. It includes a diagnosis of the monkfish fishery in 2001, a description of procedures and criteria adopted for the estimate of the resource sustainable levels of exploitation and, finally, a list of objective recommendations as subsidies to the definition of the management actions for the 2002 fishing season. Lastly a public presentation and debate of the information raised and the proposed recommendations is described as the culmination of a dynamic and participative unseen process of fishing management in Brazil. SENSIBILITY OF MARINE ORGANISMS USED IN TOXICITY TESTS IN BRAZIL SENSIBILIDADE DOS ORGANISMOS MARINHOS UTILIZADOS EM TESTES DE TOXICIDADE NO BRASIL
C RESGALLA Jr.,K. S. LAITANO
Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology , 2002,
Abstract: Data was compiled and treated from 60 toxicity tests using marine organisms under effect of 4 reference substances: copper, chrome, zinc and DSS, available in the literature and data from the Ecotoxicity Laboratory from CTTMar/UNIVALI. By ranking values of CL50/CE50, it was shown that microcrustaceans copepods and mysids are the most sensitive organisms to all tested substances. Sea urchins and mollusks also exhibited a high sensibility, but are mutually exclusive, showing therefore a specificity to the type of contaminant. Through a preliminary risk analysis, using the sensibility ranking and data from the acceptable limits from CONAMA N° 20 1986 resolution, these substances exhibit a probability effect of up to 60% on the marine aquatic biota.

CEPHALOPODS IN THE CATCHES OF COMMERCIAL FISHERIES ON THE SLOPE GROUNDS OFF SOUTHEASTERN AND SOUTHERN BRAZIL CEFALóPODES CAPTURADOS PELA PESCA COMERCIAL DE TALUDE NO SUDESTE E SUL DO BRASIL
J. A PEREZ,R. S. MARTINS,R. A. SANTOS
Brazilian Journal of Aquatic Science and Technology , 2004,
Abstract: The development of demersal fishing in slope areas off southern Brazil (21o - 34o S) accelerated since the year 2000 as a result of commercial operations conducted by national and chartered bottom longliners, potters, gillnetters and trawlers. These operations were continuously monitored by observers as part of scientific research program carried out by the Fisheries Study Group (CTTMar - UNIVALI) in collaboration with Brazilian Government. Besides the assessment of the main stocks, efforts have been concentrated on assessing the impact generated by fishing on non-target organisms and on deep-water ecosystem as a whole. In this context, this work lists cephalopod fauna caught by both trawling and gillnetting between 2001 and 2003. Only the argentinean squid Illex argentinus was included between trawlers target-species, specially during the winter of 2001. Other 15 species, included in the orders Spirulida (1), Sepiolida (1), Teuthida (6) and Octopodida (5), were caught as by-catch of trawling operations. Particularly abundant in some fishing trips were the squid Pholidoteuthis adami and Histioteuthis corona corona, and the octopus Vosseledone charrua. Gillnet fishing directed towards the monkfish between 2001 and 2002 caught, besides the argentinean squid, two octopods including the pelagic Argonauta argo.
