Hyperon polarization and single spin left-right asymmetry in inclusive production processes at high energies  [PDF]

Abstract: It is shown that the polarization of hyperons observed in high energy collisions using unpolarized hadron beams and unpolarized nucleon or nuclear targets is closely related to the left-right asymmetries observed in single spin inclusive hadron production processes. The relationship is most obvious for the production of the hyperons which have only one common valence quark with the projectile. Examples of this kind are given. Further implications of the existence of large polarization for hyperon which has two valence quarks in common with the projectile and their consequences are discussed. A comparison with the available data is made. Further tests are suggested.

Abstract: A formalism proposed to study transverse Lambda polarization in unpolarized hadronic processes, based on a generalized pQCD factorization theorem, is extended to semi-inclusive DIS. Analytical expressions and examples of numerical estimates are given.

Abstract: It is shown that the polarization in inclusive hyperon production and the left-right asymmetries in meson and hyperon production are closely related to one other. They can be understood in terms of a picture in which the orbital motion of valence quarks of the scattering hadrons play an important role.

Abstract: The inclusive NC and CC neutrino(antineutrino)-nucleus scattering for the case of a nucleus with isotopic spin equal to zero is considered. It is shown that the measurement of the neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry at relatively small energies could allow to obtain model-independent information about the contribution of the axial strange current to the cross sections of the NC processes.

Abstract: The long-standing problem of transverse Lambda polarization in high-energy collisions of unpolarized hadrons can be tackled by considering new, spin and k_T-dependent quark fragmentation functions for an unpolarized quark into a polarized, spin-1/2 hadron. Simple phenomenological parameterizations of these new "polarizing fragmentation functions", which describe quite well the experimental data on Lambda and Lambda-bar hyperons produced in p-A processes, are utilized and extended here to give predictions for transverse Lambda polarization in semi-inclusive DIS

Abstract: Both meson photoproduction and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering can potentially probe transversity properties of the nucleon. We explore how that potential can be realized dynamically. The role of rescattering in both exclusive and inclusive meson production as a source for single spin asymmetries is examined. Using a dynamical model, we evaluate the spin independent $\cos 2\phi$ asymmetry associated with transversity of quarks inside unpolarized hadrons, at HERMES kinematics. We also explore the effects of rescattering on the transversity distribution of the nucleon.

Abstract: Following a previous description of Lambda and Lambda-bar polarization in unpolarized p-p interactions, within a perturbative QCD factorization scheme with new polarizing fragmentation functions, here we investigate the transverse polarization of Lambda's and Lambda-bar's produced in semi-inclusive DIS. Analytical expressions for both neutral and charged current exchange are given. Since quantitative predictions cannot be given at this stage and comparison with existing data are not yet significant, we present the general formalism and a qualitative analysis displaying generic features of the Lambda and Lambda-bar polarization for specific scenarios. Different kinematical situations are considered, corresponding to experiments currently able to study Lambda production in semi-inclusive DIS.

Abstract: A QCD formula for the polarization in the large-p_T \Lambda hyperon production in the unpolarized nucleon-nucleon collision at large x_F is derived. We focus on the mechanism in which the chiral-odd spin-independent twist-3 quark distribution E_F(x,x) becomes the source of the transversely polarized quarks fragmenting into the polarized \Lambda. A simple model estimate for that contribution shows the possibility that it gives rise to a sizable \Lambda polarization.

Abstract: I discuss inclusive and semi-inclusive lepton-hadron scattering emphasizing the importance of polarization in order to study various single or double spin asymmetries and the importance of particle identification and angular resolution in the dectection of final state particles to study azimuthal asymmetries. The observables obtained in this way enable a detailed study of quark and gluon correlations in hadrons.
