Abstract: The caret package, short for classification and regression training, contains numerous tools for developing predictive models using the rich set of models available in R. The package focuses on simplifying model training and tuning across a wide variety of modeling techniques. It also includes methods for pre-processing training data, calculating variable importance, and model visualizations. An example from computational chemistry is used to illustrate the functionality on a real data set and to benchmark the benefits of parallel processing with several types of models.

Abstract: We study the classical problem of high frequency scattering of an incident plane wave by a smooth convex two-dimensional body. We present a new integral representation of the leading order solution in the "Fock region", i.e. the neighbourhood of a point of tangency between the incident rays and the scatterer boundary, from which the penumbra (light-shadow boundary) effects originate. The new representation, which is equivalent to the classical Fourier integral representation and its well-studied "forked contour" regularisation, reveals that the Pekeris caret function (sometimes referred to as a "Fock-type integral" or a "Fock scattering function"), a special function already known to describe the field in the penumbra, is also an intrinsic part of the solution in the inner Fock region. We also provide the correct interpretation of a divergent integral arising in the analysis of Tew et al. (Wave Motion 32, 2000), enabling the results of that paper to be used for quantitative calculations.

Abstract: The Novartis-ILAR Rheumatology Prize was awarded at the 20th ILAR Congress of Rheumatology in Edmonton, Canada in August 2001. The Editors-in-Chief would like to inform readers that this Commentary has not undergone peer-review, because it is based upon the acceptance speech for the Prize.In our work on osteoarthritis, we identified several enzymatic pathways that are intimately related to the development of this disease. More specifically, we demonstrated that, although the matrix metalloprotease (MMP) family is of pivotal importance in the degradation of osteoarthritic cartilage [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26] (Fig. 1), the serine- and cysteine-dependent proteases [27,28,29,30] also play a significant role. We were among the first to introduce and demonstrate the importance of an imbalance in enzymes and their specific inhibitors (tissue inhibitor of MMP, cathepsin B-inhibitors and plasminogen activator/plasmin/plasminogen activator inhibitor-1) in osteoarthritic tissues. This concept is now well recognized as an intimate element in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis.In recent years, we have been involved in the discovery of a new collagenase, collagenase-3 (MMP-13), in cartilage and demonstrated its involvement in the osteoarthritis disease process [18]. We were also the first group to clone human collagenase-3 promoter, more specifically its 5' flanking region (GenBank #U52692) [20]. From the work undertaken in our laboratory, we have come to the hypothesis that collagenase-3, in contrast to collagenase-1 (MMP-1), is involved in the remodeling phase of osteoarthritic cartilage [21,22,23,24,26]. Moreover, we also found that, although many cytokines and factors can upregulate collagenase-3, transforming growth factor (TGF)-β appears to be the factor responsible for its upregulation in vivo in osteoarthritic cartilage [21,24,26].Altogether, these findings have proven to be of utmost importance, as some pharmaceutical companies

Abstract: 在地面静止状态下试验研究了尖脊进气道气动特性以及唇口厚度对进气道性能影响,给出了进气道各侧壁沿程静压分布及其出口总压分布图谱,研究了进气口流动特点及其对出口总压畸变流场的影响。试验表明,caret进气道进口存在一大一小的反向旋转涡,该旋涡的作用使得进气道高、低压区均旋转了90°以上。进口下唇口和外唇口厚度对地面静止状态下的进气道总压恢复系数和总压畸变指数有较大的影响,为进气唇口厚度的选择提供了依据。

Our aim is to be able to transfer our cultural wealth to the next generations. In our study we have focused on the almost extinct occupations like prosthetics, saddlery, matting and pottery.

Abstract: Background: The WHO-ILAR Community Oriented Program for Control of Rheumatic Diseases (COPCORD) primarily aims to estimate the burden of musculoskeletal symptoms/disorders. We estimated the incidence of musculoskeletal pain in the first community-based COPCORD study in Kuwait. Subjects and Methods: The validated Arabic version of the WHOILAR COPCORD Core Questionnaire was used in a survey of 2500 randomly selected Kuwaiti households to assess the frequency of musculoskeletal pain, disability, and health-seeking behavior in adult Kuwaitis. Those subjects reporting no musculoskeletal pain were identified and followed-up for a period of one year by contacting them every 2 weeks. Once a respondent reported pain, an appointment to report to hospital was offered and the subject was examined by a rheumatologist using American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. Results: Of 5159 adults who were non-complainers in an earlier prevalence phase of the study, 3341 responded to phone calls (response rate of 65%). The incidence of musculoskeletal pain was 6.6% (95%CI, 3.4%- 9.7%). Age- and sex-adjusted incidence rates were 7.2% (95%CI, 3.4%- 10.5%) for females and 6.1% (95%CI, 3.1%-9.2%) for males. The incidence rate increased with increasing age, body mass index, and with being married. The common sites of pain were knee, low back and shoulder. Conclusion: The incidence of musculoskeletal pain among Kuwaiti adults is reported for the first time. Further studies adopting the same instrument in other communities are warranted to compare with our findings.

Risk factors of knee osteoarthritis, WHO-ILAR-COPCORD study

Abstract: "nBackground: To evaluate the association between age, sex, BMI, waist/hip ratio, smoking, religion, ethnicity, education and knee osteoarthritis. "nMethods: Eligible subjects were randomly included from participants of Tehran COPCORD study, of whom 480 subjects with knee osteoarthritis were compared to 490 subjects without (case-control study). Using a questionnaire developed by COPCORD group (Asia & Oceania), we enquired about the risk factors of knee osteoarthritis i.e. age, sex, BMI, Waist/Hip ratio, religion, ethnicity, education and smoking. Knee osteoarthritis was defined using ACR criteria. Each knee was unit of analysis using GEE technique to evaluate these associations. "nResults: Age (OR; 1.096; CI95%: 1.091-1.1; P: 0.00) and sex (OR; 2.85; CI95%: 2.49-3.28; P: 0.00) showed significant association with knee osteoarthritis. Overweight (OR; 1.81; CI95%: 1.28-2.55; P: 0.00) and obesity (OR; 3.3; CI95%: 2.34-4.66; P: 0.00) both showed higher risk for knee osteoarthritis. The association between waist/hip ratio and knee osteoarthritis showed an OR of 5.28, CI95%: 0.89-31.44; P: 0.07. However, this association was only borderline significant. People with different religion or ethnicity and smokers had no extra risks for knee osteoarthritis. Higher education is a protective factor for knee osteoarthritis as people who had university education compared to people with no/primary education showed a lower risk for knee osteoarthritis (OR; 0.54; CI95%: 0.38-0.78; P: 0.00). "nConclusions: Our study confirmed that elderly, females, overweight and obese people are at higher risk to develop knee osteoarthritis as found in western societies. Higher education is a protective factor against knee osteoarthritis. Ethnicity, religion and smoking showed no extra risk of knee osteoarthritis.
