The Postmodern Consumer: An Identity Constructor?  [cached]
Manel Hamouda,Abderrazak Gharbi
International Journal of Marketing Studies , 2013, DOI: 10.5539/ijms.v5n2p41
Abstract: This article attempts to contribute to better understand the postmodern consumer, by trying to identify one of its main characteristics: an identity constructor. Indeed, after studying the postmodern conditions, we have noticed that every condition favors the creation of identities voluntarily and consciously assumed by the consumer. The consumer is always looking to be socially desired by changing his identity every time he wishes. An empirical study was, therefore, conducted to confirm this postmodern consumer trend. The results found shows that the postmodern consumer is not seeking to manage his impression in front of others through changing identities but rather he seeks to live deeply himself in all identities which he built.
Practical implications of 'postmodern philosophy'  [PDF]
Savi? Mile V.
Filozofija i Dru?tvo , 2002, DOI: 10.2298/fid0209021s
Abstract: The article examines the implications of the discourse about postmodernity. Postmodernity is analyzed as a complex discursive figure. Within the discourse about postmodernity three levels are distinguished: the postmodern condition, postmodernism, and reflection of the postmodern condition. Special attention is paid to globalization and the problem of the enforcement of modern projects in East-European societies, particularly Serbia. These societies are termed object-societies, while their modification of modernity is called eastmodernity. The author's answer to the complexity of the postmodern condition is a conception of the politics of subsistence.

Media and postmodern reality  [PDF]
Ma?irevi? Ljubomir
Sociologija , 2010, DOI: 10.2298/soc1002127m
Abstract: The paper tackles the ideas of key postmodern theoreticians on the role of the media in contemporary societies. The aim is to show that according to postmodern theory the media have become the leading factor in contemporary social processes marked by the loss of sense of historical continuity in everyday human experience. Postmodern theoreticians claim that, since the media system, which has come to wholly encompass reality at the turn of this century, is unable to reclaim the past, human existence has found itself in the ceaseless schizophrenic present. Simulations of events that once were and come back to us today like a string of anachronistic media notions about the past, bring us into the state of historical amnesia. The media, and cinema above all, are the main catalyst of this process, as well as of what postmodernists call the new superficiality and shallowness of social life. Postmodern reality is characterized by a simulation of history which didn't happen; today people are exposed to pseudo-experience emerging from constant exposure to the simulacrum of historical events. In place of conclusion, Baudrillard's interpretation of the Gulf War as a virtual media event is offered.
Can museums survive the postmodern?  [cached]
Suzanne Keene
Archaeology International , 2005, DOI: 10.5334/ai.0910
Abstract: Although archaeologists regard museums as vital repositories of important research materials, museum professionals take a broader view of their role in not only preserving natural and cultural heritage but also of how they could or should be presented, or interpreted, to the public. In this personal view, issues of what museums should be, or seek to be, in a postmodern world are explored.
Archetypal Literary Theory in the Postmodern Era
Dobson, Darrell
JUNG: the e-Journal of the Jungian Society for Scholarly Study , 2005,
Abstract: I propose that differentiating the archetype and the archetypal image provides a means of responding to some postmodern critiques of archetypal theory. I consider the literary theories of Northrop Frye and a postmodern feminist critique of his work. I hypothesize that a more fully Jungian perspective on archetypal theory provides a means of responding to the critiques levelled at Frye. This analysis hopes to contribute to positioning archetypal theory in such a manner as to allow it to remain cogent and relevant in light of postmodern critiques, and to do so without marginalizing or ignoring postmodern theoretical insights.
Science and the Postmodern Challenge  [cached]
Anthony Idoko Okpanachi
Studies in Sociology of Science , 2012, DOI: 10.3968/j.sss.1923018420120304.1152
Abstract: The issue of objectivity of any knowledge claim remains heavily controversial in academic circles. Science and its practitioners claim to be objective, value free and able to attain definite or certain knowledge as opposed to mere opinion/belief whereas such pretensions are contended by the postmodern disposition that insists on the impossibility of definite/certain knowledge and objectivity. Postmodern thinking favours multiculturalism, relativism and a worldview in which claims of truth are contested. How does science respond to these critical matters and what are the prospects of science in the future in the face of these hurdles? What are some of the presuppositions of science that tend to obliterate its claim to certain and objective knowledge? How defensible and justifiable are some of the challenges that post modern thinking bring forth to be confronted by any epistemological endeavour that must be taken seriously as far the issue of objectivity and certainty are concerned? These are among the queries the paper seeks to answer in view of assessing the extent to which the tenuous tension can be appreciated and resolved. The exercise hopes to achieve this using the analytical and critical tools of philosophy. Key words: Science; Objectivity; Modernism and Postmodernism
John Calvin and postmodern spirituality  [cached]
P.H. Fick
In die Skriflig , 2010, DOI: 10.4102/ids.v44i4.193
Abstract: Postmodernists reject universal truth claims and brand them as violent impositions on a person by powerful institutions. Postmodernist spirituality seeks for a more subjective, life- experience based attitude towards values and truths of the Bible and relationship in community. Careful consideration should be given to the issues of community, knowledge/truth, faith, and faith experience. This article will show that, in his “Institutes”, Calvin gives ample attention to faith, the liberating truth about God as revealed in Jesus Christ, and to the Chris- tian’s intimate relationship with Him. Being in Christ, commu- nion with Christ or the “unio mystica cum Christo” through faith as a central theme in Calvin’s theology, needs to be redis- covered and re-applied to reformed spirituality as apologetic means in a postmodern world. This treasure should satisfy the kind of spirituality postmodernists yearn for.

Proceedings of National Aviation University , 2005,
Abstract: The article reviews general problems of the postmodern fiction translation. The author discusses interrelation between required cognitive base of a translator, appropriate translation skills and excellent knowledge of native language on one hand, and adequate translation of postmodern fiction on the other hand. Translator’s difficulties generated by the literary work specifics are analyzed and summarized, and practical ways to curb with them are suggested. Mapping the postmodern past
Hodder, Ian
Trabajos de Prehistoria , 1998,
Abstract: This paper begins by describing steps that are being taken to develop a reflexive excavation method at atalh yük. From these 12 steps, four themes are described. These are relationality (contextuality) of meaning, reflexivity (critique), interactivity and multivocality. The one idea lying behind all four themes is the need to introduce non-dichotomous thinking in archaeology. The need for such thinking is argued to be especially high in the modern (or postmodern) global systems within which archaeologists increasingly work. The need for fluidity and the breaking down of boundaries is clear in a postcolonial world increasingly linked by information systems.
