Outbreak of kala-azar in Bombay.  [cached]
Bhatia S,Patel N,Gulhane S,Dongre V
Journal of Postgraduate Medicine , 1995,
Abstract: A chance diagnosis of kala-azar in a patient referred from Acworth Leprosy Home in Bombay was followed up, resulting in an investigation of a total of 25 patients (inpatients and residents) for the presence of the disease. 30.3% of the patients investigated were found to be suffering from the disease. This confirms the earlier suspicion that Bombay and especially the Acworth Leprosy Home is an endemic area for kala-azar.

Sonawala M,Saraswathi K,Deodhar L
Journal of Postgraduate Medicine , 1995,
Abstract: Prevalence of Shigellae serotypes in Bombay was studied from June 1988 to May 1991. A total of 2758 faecal specimens were collected from paediatric patients (< 12 yrs) with acute gastroenteritis. A total of 90 Shigella were isolated giving the isolation rate of 3.2%. Shigella flexneri was the predominant serogroup (73.3%) followed by Shigella dysenteriae (16.6%). All the isolates were sensitive to nalidixic acid. Eighty percent of the Shigellae were multidrug resistant. Present data were compared with the study carried out during the period of 1983-87 from the same institute. A change in the serogroup prevalence was noted wherein Shigella flexneri dominated over Shigella dysenteriae since 1985. Increase in resistance to ampicillin and cotrimoxazole was seen in Shigella flexneri strains as compared to previous years.

Momentum Strategy and Bombay Stock Exchange
Polak Petr,Ejaz Abduallah
Sovremennaa Ekonomika : Problemy, Tendencii, Perspektivy , 2012,
Abstract: Short term momentum effect claims that recent past winners tend to outperform the market whereas recent past losers tend to underperforms the market. Therefore by definition it challenges the efficient market hypothesis, which is of the view that future returns cannot be predicted by using past returns. This study examines whether short term momentum effect challenges the efficient market hypothesis or not. Momentum effect has been found in almost all the stock exchanges in the world and documented in the financial literature by many well-known scholars. For this purpose, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) has been chosen and stock prices of BSE 100 index have been downloaded for the period starting from 24 June, 2006 and ending on 24 June, 2011 to perform momentum calculations. BSE has been selected because of its rapidly growing nature. Many leading articles have mentioned Bombay Stock Exchange as one of the fastest emerging capital stock market in the world. Short term momentum anomaly has been found in Bombay Stock Exchange. Price momentum strategy gives abnormal returns, if implemented in BSE. Average monthly return from BSE is 12.05% which is higher than many leading stock markets of the world for instance NYSE, AMEX, and LSE etc. It is also noticed that winners are outperforming the losers. The above findings are in line with the findings of existing literature. Trading volume based momentum strategies only work when high trading volume and low trading volume based strategies will be used in combination with each other. The notion that “BSE is an emerging market” has also been tested. Returns of momentum strategy from Bombay Stock Exchange and Karachi Stock Exchange have been compared and found that BSE gives more returns than KSE. It has been confirmed from this finding that BSE is the emerging stock market in the region.

Saraswathi K,Deodhar L
Journal of Postgraduate Medicine , 1990,
Abstract: Of 935 faecal samples studied over a period of one year, V. cholerae 01 was isolated from 102 samples (10.9%). All the strains were found to be E1 Tor Ogawa. The strains belonging to the phage types 2 and 4 were encountered in our study, type 2 being the highest (76.5%). The sensitivity pattern of all strains to the commonly used antibiotics was determined. Strains sensitive to gentamicin (92.2%), nalidixic acid (85.3%), kanamycin (83.3%), cotrimoxazole (80.4%) and chloramphenicol (75.5%) were observed. Out of the total, 36.3%, 29.4% and 28.4% of V. cholerae strains were found to be resistant to ampicillin, streptomycin and tetracycline respectively. V. cholerae was isolated throughout the year indicating the endemicity of cholera in Bombay.
