Abstract: dodonaea viscosa jacq., sapindaceae, is a plant traditionally used as anti fever, anti- rheumatic and antimicrobial. this work determined morpho-anatomical parameters, by macro and microscopic analysis of dodonaea viscosa leaves, aiming to reach their diagnosis as pharmaceutical input. macroscopically, the leaves have a lanceolate shape limb, full margin, rough consistence and venation eucamptodromous. the petiole is short, straight and in transversal section it is triangular with round angles. microscopically, the lenticullar formation cuticle is seen with prominence, the glandular thricomes are seen with four cells on the base, the non-glandular unicellular thricomes are seen with pointed apex, the higrophitic stomatas are disposed in the lower surface epidermis only, the palisade parenchyma show up to three-cell layers and vascular bundles with xylem involved by phloem and parenchyma lines which bound a central mass of parenchyma cells to a sclerenchyma sheath. this morph-anatomical characteristic, when analyzed in group, contributes to the botanical quality control of dodonaea viscosa leaves as pharmaceutical input.

Abstract: The crude ethanolic extract and n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and aqueous fractions of Dodonaea viscosa were analyzed for antibacterial potential against four Gram positive bacteria: Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, and three Gram negative bacteria: Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Preliminary screening showed inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The thin layer chromatograms of the fractions were then subjected to contact bioautography, which showed inhibition zone at different Rf values against Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus luteus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, indicating the presence of antibacterial components. The MIC of each fraction was determined through a 96-well micro-titer plate method. The non-viability of the organisms was ascertained by determining the MBC of the fractions.

Abstract: the results of the specific distribution of lichens sampled on 30 small dodonaea viscosa l. trees located in a restinga area on the banks of lagoa negra in itapu? state park, rio grande do sul, state are presented. the difference in species diversity among the habitats was proved through similarity tests. the twig was the habitat that has presented the greatest floristic differentiation and the branches were similar to the trunks. lichen communities vary depending on habitat conditioned to the bark roughness, which changes according to the age of the substrate.

Abstract: Objectives: To evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic extract of Cleome viscosa Linn. (Capparidaceae) against carbon tetrachloride (CCI 4 ) induced hepatotoxicity in experimental animal models. Materials and Methods: Leaf powder of Cleome viscosa was extracted with ethanol. The hepatoprotective activity of the extract was assessed in CCI 4 induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Various biochemical parameters were estimated and histopathological studies were also performed on rat liver. The hepatoprotective activity was also supported by determining a functional parameter, i.e. thiopental-induced sleep of mice poisoned with CCl 4 . Results: The test material was found effective as hepatoprotective, through in vivo and histopathological studies. The extract was found to be effective in shortening the thiopental induced sleep in mice poisoned with CCl 4 . The hepatoprotective effect of ethanolic extract was comparable to that of silymarin, a standard hepatoprotective agent. Conclusion: The results of the present study show that ethanolic extract of Cleome viscosa has significant hepatoprotective activity.
Antidiabetic, hypolipidaemic and antioxidant activity of Dodonaea viscosa aerial parts in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats  [cached]

Abstract: We evaluated the antidiabetic and antioxidant activity of Dodonaea viscosa in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The water extract (DVW) and polar fraction of ethanol extract (DVE-4) in a single-dose one-day study showed dose-dependent reduction in glucose levels with maximum effect of 42.16% and 72.9% respectively at 6 h post drug treatment (p<0.001). DVE-4 was more active than DVW and glibenclamide. In a multi-dose fifteen-day study, lower doses of DVW (400 mg/kg) and DVE-4 (200 mg/kg) exhibited higher percentage reduction in glucose levels compared to glibenclamide treated group. Altered levels of lipids, TBARS, non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants were restored by DVW (400 mg/kg) and DVE-4 (200 mg/kg) in diabetic rats. In vitro steady state and time resolved studies reveled that DVW and DVE-4 showed comparable antioxidant ability in steady state and kinetic studies suggesting its possible role in observed antidiabetic and hypolipidaemic activities. Antihyperlipidemic and Hepatoprotective Activity of Dodonaea viscosa Leaves Extracts in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus)  [PDF]

Abstract: Hyperlipidemia is associated with diabetes and hepatotoxicity has emerged as a common clinical complication by antidiabetics. The present study was conducted to determine the antihyperlipidemic and hepatoprotective activity of Dodonaea viscosa leaves extracts in the alloxan-induced diabetic rabbits. The rabbits (n = 70) were divided into seven groups including normal and diabetic control, the remaining were aqueous, aqueous:methanol (70:30), aqueous:methanol (50:50), aqueous: methanol (30:70), and methanol extracts given for 30 days. Serum levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, ALT and AST were estimated by using commercially available kits. The oral administration of aqueous:methanol (70:30) extract of the Dodonaea viscosa leaves significantly (P<0.01) decreased the raised parameters (triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol) to normal values. But the extract has significantly increased HDL-cholesterol, ALT and AST levels. For the aqueous:methanol (70:30) extract given animals, the average serum level of total cholesterol was 60.00±1.30 mg/dL, LDL-cholesterol was 92.80±2.29 mg/dL, HDL-cholesterol was 31.80±1.0 mg/dL and triglyceride was 15.40±0.75 mg/dL while the average serum levels of ALT and AST were 45.60±3.08 and 27.20±1.36 IU/dL, respectively. It is concluded from the study that aqueous:methanolic (70:30) extract of Dodonaea viscosa leaves exerts antihy- perlipidemic and hepatoprotective effects in the alloxan-induced diabetic rabbits.

Abstract: No presente trabalho foi estudada a emergência e sobrevivência à campo da Dodonaea viscosa (L.) Jacq. O delineamento estatístico utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso com 3 repeti es e 2 tratamentos, definidos como plantio com mudas e semeadura direta à campo. Os resultados demostraram que n o existe diferen a significativa entre a sobrevivência de plantas do sistema de implanta o com mudas e semeadura direta à campo. A sobrevivência das plantas em plantio com mudas foi de 88 % e em semeadura direta à campo de 76 %, resultando uma diferen a absoluta de 12 % entre as duas formas de implanta o de povoamentos da espécie.
Anti-inflammatory Activity of Hautriwaic Acid Isolated from Dodonaea viscosa Leaves  [PDF]

Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify an anti-inflammatory compound from D. viscosa leaves. The structure of this bioactive substance was elucidated by IR and NMR studies, which indicated that this natural product corresponds to hautriwaic acid (HA). This diterpene exhibited good anti-inflammatory activity in 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA) mice ear edema models by applications at doses of 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/ear (60.2, 70.2 and 87.1% inhibition, respectively); additionally Dodonaea viscosa dichloro-methane extract (DvDE) displays a 97.8% anti-inflammatory effect at 3 mg/kg. Multiple applications of DvDE at doses of 100 mg/kg on TPA mice ear edema inhibited the edema-associated inflammation by 71.8%, while HA at doses of 15 mg/kg, reduced edema to 64% and indomethacin 40%.
Isolation and structure identification of dodoneaviscoside A from the seeds of Dodonaea viscosa and its antifeedant activity against Plutella xylostella (L.)

Abstract: 采用小孔树脂、凝胶SephadexLH-20、反相色谱ODS及制备型高效液相色谱(Pre-HPLC)等分离技术,从坡柳Dodonaea viscosa(Linn.) Jacq.Enum.种子乙醇提取物中分离获得1个活性化合物。通过质谱及核磁共振等波谱技术,鉴定其为新的齐墩果烷型三萜皂苷类化合物21-epoxyangeloyl-15,16,28-tirhydroxy-22-(2-methylbutanoyl)-Olean-12-en-3-(O-α-L-arabinofuranosyl-(1→3)-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucuronide,命名为坡柳皂苷A,英文名dodoneaviscoside A。生物活性测定结果表明,其对小菜蛾Plutella xylostella(L.)3龄幼虫具有较好的非选择性拒食活性,24 h拒食中浓度(AFC50)为207.4 μg/mL。值得进一步研究。
A bioactive compound was obtained from the ethanol extract of the Dodonaea viscosa (Linn.) Jacq. Enum. seeds using separation technologies including pore resin, gel SephadexLH-20, reversed phase chromatography ODS and preparative high performance liquid chromatography (Pre-HPLC). The structures of compound 1 were characterized by NMR experiments and mass spectrometry as a new oleanane-type triterpenoid, 21-epoxyangeloyl-15,16,28-tirhydroxy-22-(2-meth-ylbutanoyl)-Olean-12-en-3-(O-α-L-arabinofuranosyl-(1→3)-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucuronide. It was named as dodoneaviscoside A. The results of the bioactivity determination showed that dodoneaviscoside A had antifeedant activity against the 3th instar larvae of Plutella xylostella (L.) with AFC50 value of 207.4 μg/mL. As a new compound with good nonselective antifeeding activity to P. xylostella, the potential applicatio of dodoneaviscoside A is worth of further investigation.
