El problema de la subjetividad en la explicación sociológica: Una mirada a partir del debate Schutz-Parsons
Griselda López,Daniela;
Revista de Estudios Sociales , 2008,
Abstract: the aim of the paper is to reconsider the alfred schutz and talcott parsons debate, taking the problem of subjectivity in sociological explanation as the axis of analysis. schutz argues that parsons correctly identifies the subjective point of view as the fundamental element of the theory of action, but he does not reach the root of the problem because he confuses subjective and objective categories. for schutz, a theory of social action must maintain a subjective point of view in order to uphold its basics principals, which refer to the social world of experience and everyday life.

The Theoretical Quandary of Subjectivity: An Intellectual Historical Note on the Action Theories of Talcott Parsons and Alfred Schutz  [cached]
Matthew M. Chew
Review of European Studies , 2009, DOI: 10.5539/res.v1n1p23
Abstract: The quandary of subjectivity — how to square the irreducible qualities of the subjectivity category with the need for objective accessibility and scientific universality — was raised by Max Weber in his action theory. Talcott Parsons and Alfred Schutz, the most prominent action theorists after Weber, are said to have dealt with the quandary in very different ways. This intellectual historical note investigates the two theorists in terms of how they dealt with the subjectivity quandary. I will show that because of their different intellectual backgrounds, they mobilized different intellectual tools in the face of the quandary. But their differences are not as significant as assumed. Additionally, their difference cannot be adequately summarized as that of a phenomenological subjectivist solution (Schutz) versus a scientistic objectivist one (Parsons). I will show that the theoretical weaknesses and outcomes of their theories are in effect not very different. I find that both Schutz and Parsons were limited by a philosophy of consciousness paradigm. Under the paradigm, both tried to deal with the subjectivity quandary by insisting on the primacy of an irreducible subjective category on the one hand and subtly re-molding that subjective category into something accessible to the objective observer on the other. In this theorizing process, Schutz was actually pressured to weaken the subjective category almost as much as Parson did. Both ended up failing to square the irreducible qualities of the subjectivity category with the need for objective accessibility and scientific universality.
Talcott Parsons: Power and system  [PDF]
Pavlovi? Vuka?in
Zbornik Matice Srpske za Drustvene Nauke , 2008, DOI: 10.2298/zmsdn0824075p
Abstract: The author critically presents Talcott Parsons' theory of power. According to Parsons, power is a generalized capacity to secure the performance of binding obligations by units in a system of collective organization when the obligations are legitimized with reference to their bearing on collective goals and where in case of recalcitrance there is a presumption of enforcement by negative situational sanctions - whatever the actual agency of that enforcement. This definition of power does not offer enough satisfying answers to the issues of interest and power conflicts as well as of social and political change.
Local content in Brazil: conceptual framework and methodological implications  [cached]
Tori Holmes
DIGITHUM , 2009,
Abstract: This article presents work in progress from PhD research investigating the use of the internet in the favelas (shantytowns) of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a particular focus on the internet content produced and shared by those who live there. The research proposes to apply the concept of local content beyond the scope of digital inclusion policy and projects, to content generated in everyday practices of internet use. The article presents an overview of internet access in Brazil and discussion of the conceptual and methodological issues raised by the interest in local content, understood as "the expression of the locally owned and adapted knowledge of a community - where the community is defined by its location, culture, language, or area of interest" according to a definition proposed by Ballantyne (2002).
Researching Lean: Methodological Implications of Loose Definitions  [PDF]

Quality Innovation Prosperity , 2012,
Abstract: Recently, Lean Production (Lean) has become a prevailing management concept in Sweden. However, previous research seems to show that the Lean concept and the impact of Lean vary considerably between organizations. This paper illustrates some key methodological issues that need to be considered when researching loosely defined management concepts such as Lean. The paper is based on a review of the literature and five comparative Swedish cases studies. Our study indicates that Lean has changed over time and that operationalization and interpretations of the concept vary considerably. This study concludes that future Lean studies should include a thorough assessment of the Lean interventions, study settings, and in particular non-Lean factors mediating the outcomes of Lean-inspired change programs.
The Definition of Inflation According to Mises: Implications for the Debate on Free Banking
Nicolás Cachanosky
Libertarian Papers , 2009,
Abstract: The discussion of what is and what is not inflation has become central among the Austrian economists in their debate between free banking with fractional reserves versus banking with 100-percent reserve. Many Austrians also turn to the writings of Mises to find out what the dean of Austrian Economics thought about inflation, but there is no agreement on the interpretation of his writings either. This article tries to contribute to the interpretation of Mises’ concept of inflation.
Stephani-Schutz quantum cosmology  [PDF]

Physics , 2007, DOI: 10.1016/j.physletb.2007.08.077
Abstract: We study the Stephani quantum cosmological model in the presence of a cosmological constant in radiation dominated Universe. In the present work the Schutz's variational formalism which recovers the notion of time is applied. This gives rise to Wheeler-DeWitt equations which can be cast in the form of Schr\"odinger equations for the scale factor. We find their eigenvalues and eigenfunctions by using the Spectral Method. Then we use the eigenfunctions in order to construct wave packets and evaluate the time-dependent expectation value of the scale factor, which is found to oscillate between non-zero finite maximum and minimum values. Since the expectation value of the scale factor never tends to the singular point, we have an initial indication that this model may not have singularities at the quantum level.

Revista Emancipa??o , 2007,
Abstract: This work intended to deal with some aspects present in the contemporary sociological theory of Talcott Parsons, specifically what concerns to the systemic analysis and functionalist of the human action integrated into systems with views to the balance, to the systematization and to the reproduction of normative social patterns. It was a main concern in this analysis, as a start, the general action conceptual scheme elaborated by Parsons, having as a reference his work entitled The Social System, in which are cemented key words of the author’s thoughts, seeking to discuss particularly the concepts of status and the role distribution in the social structure, as well as the integrative issue of the familiar systems that imply in social linking and in the criteria of the social stratification.
