This article presents a review of the literature on organizational forgetting and its consequences for the process of organizational learning, so as to assess the importance attributed to organizational forgetting, considering that it interferes in the learning process. The literature reviewed showed great interest in learning as a competitive differential. On the other hand, organizational forgetting and its developments are underestimated in the processes of organizational learning.

Researchers have questioned the retrieval of traumatic situations such as the ones that occurred in the Holocaust, the bombing of Hiroshima, the Vietnam war, or the fratricidal massacres in Yugoslavia. Although some classic studies have identified important aspects relating to history and memory, there are several ways of dealing with the past, and all of them involve interests, power and exclusions. The politics of memory relating to past crimes – at the center of an ongoing debate in several academic fields as well as in society in general – depends on processes of selection and on elements that are beyond human understanding. We need to find a balance between an obsession for the past and attempts to impose forgetting. Therefore, our goal is to expand the knowledge of history, memory and forgetting, emphasizing limits as well as moral and ethical implications.

Abstract: This paper aims at analysis of the short story “Unaccustomed Earth”, by Jhumpa Lahiri, in order to show the way the dialectic relationship between memory and forgetting intertwines with the issue of the migrant’s cultural identity.
Towards a Phenomenology of Memory and Forgetting  [cached]

études Ricoeuriennes / Ricoeur Studies , 2011, DOI: 10.5195/errs.2011.42
Abstract: Differences and trends in the discourse of memory in France have been consistent since the publication by Henri Bergson of Matter and Memory in 1896. In History, Memory and Forgetting published in 2000, Ric ur’s approach goes further than Bergson, Durkheim and Halbwachs. The memory issue in Ric ur is closely linked to a “hermeneutics of the self” that he already introduced in Oneself as Another in 1990. It seems that the traditional paradigm between individual and collective memory has been replaced by the affirmation of the dialogical nature of memory related to the dialogical nature of being a self and an other.

Abstract: This research employs the self-reference effect paradigm and the list method of directed forgetting, to study the directed forgetting under self- referential processing and other-referential processing conditions. The results show that: (1) there is no significant difference in the general recall performance between the two processing conditions in the paradigm of directed forgetting. (2) Within the list method of directed forgetting, the difference between the two processing conditions is revealed that the effect of directed forgetting appears under the self-referential processing condition, whereas not under other-referential processing condition. This may suggest that the effect of inhibition due to the instruction of directed forgetting is strong enough for memory materials with high distinctness under the self-referential processing to produce the directed forgetting effect.
The effect of haptic cues on motor and perceptual based implicit sequence learning  [PDF]

Abstract: We introduced haptic cues to the serial reaction time (SRT) sequence learning task alongside the standard visual cues to assess the relative contributions of visual and haptic stimuli to the formation of motor and perceptual memories. We used motorized keys to deliver brief pulse-like displacements to the resting fingers, expecting that the proximity and similarity of these cues to the subsequent response motor actions (finger-activated key-presses) would strengthen the motor memory trace in particular. We adopted the experimental protocol developed by Willingham (1999) to explore whether haptic cues contribute differently than visual cues to the balance of motor and perceptual learning. We found that sequence learning occurs with haptic stimuli as well as with visual stimuli and we found that irrespective of the stimuli (visual or haptic) the SRT task leads to a greater amount of motor learning than perceptual learning.
A Mathematical Model of Forgetting and Amnesia  [PDF]

Abstract: We describe a mathematical model of learning and memory and apply it to the dynamics of forgetting and amnesia. The model is based on the hypothesis that the neural systems involved in memory at different time scales share two fundamental properties: (1) representations in a store decline in strength (2) while trying to induce new representations in higher-level more permanent stores. This paper addresses several types of experimental and clinical phenomena: (i) the temporal gradient of retrograde amnesia (Ribot’s Law), (ii) forgetting curves with and without anterograde amnesia, and (iii) learning and forgetting curves with impaired cortical plasticity. Results are in the form of closed-form expressions that are applied to studies with mice, rats, and monkeys. In order to analyze human data in a quantitative manner, we also derive a relative measure of retrograde amnesia that removes the effects of non-equal item difficulty for different time periods commonly found with clinical retrograde amnesia tests. Using these analytical tools, we review studies of temporal gradients in the memory of patients with Korsakoff’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Dementia, Huntington’s Disease, and other disorders.

Abstract: A large body of evidence suggested that both emotion and self-referential processing can enhance memory. However, it remains unclear how these two factors influence directed forgetting. This study speculates that directed forgetting of negative self-referential memory is more difficult than forgetting of other-referential memory. To verify this speculation, we combined the directed forgetting paradigm with the self-reference task. The behavioral result suggested that although both self-referential and other-referential information can be directly forgotten, less self-referential information can be forgotten than other-referential information. At the neural level, the forget instruction strongly activated the frontal cortex, suggesting that directed forgetting is not memory decay but an active process. In addition, compared with the negative other-referential information, forgetting of the negative self-referential information were associated with a more widespread activation, including the orbital frontal gyrus (BA47), the inferior frontal gyrus (BA45, BA44), and the middle frontal gyrus. Our results suggest that forgetting of the self-referential information seems to be a more demanding and difficult process.
