Development of Total Quality Management in Kaunas University of Technology  [PDF]

Abstract: We reflect on the activities of Department of Quality Management, Faculty of Economics and Management, Kaunas University of Technology in this article. The rea-sons which lead to the establishment of the Department of Quality Management are briefly presented. Since 1997 the members of the department research various problems of quality management, co-ordinate programme for Master’s degree (Quality Management specialization) and commu-nicate its research to business and public organizations. These three activities of the Department research, teaching and communication of the results of research are reviewed in this article. First, the topics of the research conducted from the establishment of the Department could be gener-alized under these themes: Total quality management (TQM) as conceptual core, quality culture, quality and performance measurement, stakeholders’ interests har-monization, processual approach, quality of life, wage administration under TQM. Research under these topics is reviewed. A theoretical contribution and results are dis-cussed. Second, the courses underlying Quality Manage-ment specialization are also analyzed. It is argued that during the decade more than a hundred of students became quality managers. The content of the courses is discussed. Third, the ways of communication of quality management methods to business and public organizations is high-lighted. The main means of communication of TQM are: the Lithuanian Association for Quality Management and the Center for Total Quality Management. The article pre-sents the discussion on possible and relevant research top-ics. Five possible directions was identified: to proceed on research, that has been already conducted, look for new approaches to explain how quality is achieved, incorporate knowledge from other disciplines, reinterpret the main concepts of quality in the context of present changes, ana-lyze the effects of quality management practices.

Abstract: The article summarizes the results of theoretical and empirical studies in the sphere of the project preparation and realization processes by focusing on the contribution of the researchers, educators and staff of the Faculty of Economics and Management and Project Management Center of Kaunas University of Technology to the development of this relevant sphere of management. The article distinguishes the following basic aspects: Consistent patterns of environmental changes effecting projects, effect of the business intellige on changes, development of science and technologies and project realization. Cost reduction factors in project realization processes, the effect of the accumulated project value on its realization, the effect of electronic services on the project realization costs. Human resources, their competence development with the help of projects.The article includes conclusions and suggestions with regard to the development of research projects and studies within the basis of cooperation with the European Union and world universities.

Abstract: Accounting provides data on the company’s performance, finance flows, and this information is used to evaluate the company’s performance, to make management decisions and future plans; therefore, accounting can very well be called universal or international business language. The success of any major international company, individual trader, or public organization depends on the knowledge of accounting conceptions and practice. Sceptics can maintain that accounting is strongly regulated by the legal basis, business accounting standards, so, the competence of the accountants depends on their knowledge and practical skills. Accounting requires constant research, the results of which facilitate forming the legal basis of accounting and accounting policy not only at the level of the enterprise, but, also at the state level, correcting and developing accounting standards, forming accounting systems for companies’ management as well as study of their practical implementation. The problems of accounting lead to the necessity of research, and the latter requires practical results. All this helps to raise the qualitative level of accounting teaching and provide knowledge to future specialists. As economy is in the process of development and changes, modern knowledge society is formed, which changes the qualitative and quantitative requirements raised for specialists of accounting.
Waste Sorting Habits by the Community of Kaunas University of Technology, Reasons and Influencing Factors  [cached]

Abstract: The article presents the waste management system at Kaunas University of Technology, surveys the waste sorting habits of its community, both students and employees, and analyses the reasons and factors influencing waste sorting and non-sorting. The introduction of a separate paper waste collection system has made it possible to reduce the amount of mixed waste by 25% during the first three months of its functioning. 58% of employees and 45% of students sort some of their waste partly, 23% of employees and 11% of students sort all their waste. 8% of employees and 19% of students sort their waste sometimes. 8% of employees and 24% of students do not sort waste at all. 77% of employees and 66% of students think that the main problem caused by waste generation is pollution of the environment. Therefore willingness to reduce an impact on it is the main reason for sorting, while a lack of conditions to keep separated recyclable refuse and a lack of nearby containers are main factors that are distracting people from source-sorting. Growth of environmental awareness and formation of sorting habits that are transmitted to family members are identified as the strengths. Lack of conditions for sorting (e.g. no place to keep sorted waste at home, insufficiently developed waste collection infrastructure), mistrust in a sorted waste collection system (e.g. belief that sorted waste goes to a landfill), and lack of information are the weaknesses. The opportunities comprise development of a convenient waste collection infrastructure, introduction of economic incentives and rise of further awareness. Identified threats for sorting at the source that discourage source sorting are the following: a developed infrastructure will not satisfy real needs; sorting will not become financially rewarding; improper decisions about a waste management system and waste treatment practices made at the state level, no real use of sorting. Abstract: After China’s entry into WTO, the importance and urgency of developing and promoting bilingual teaching in colleges and universities is becoming increasingly prominent. In order to promote the reform of bilingual teaching in colleges and universities in Liaoning Province, this paper uses case law, taking the Advanced Higher Education Teaching practice of Queensland University of Technology as a case, to provide reference for English teaching in various colleges and universities in Liaoning province. Among them, the advanced teaching method of this school includes dozens of kinds, all from the teaching practice of colleges and universities, which has certain research value for the innovation of teaching methods in English instruction in colleges and universities in our province during the “Thirteen-Five” period. Practice has proved that the reform of teaching method is the key and is important to promote the reform of bilingual teaching in colleges and universities in Liaoning province.

Abstract: This study uses Extended Technology Acceptance Model (ETAM) to predict University Management Information System (UMIS) acceptance amongst postgraduate students. A model for UMIS acceptance is used to examine how various factors (technical support, and computer literacy) modified from Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) influence acceptance and its antecedents. This model is examined through an empirical study using structural equation modeling techniques. Results shows that perceived usefulness, perceived ease to use, technical support, and computer literacy were significant determinants of postgraduate students’ UMIS acceptance. The current research found that a strong positive relationships between the technical support and the usage of IU (UMIS).

Abstract: We describe a model of instruction in mathematics which combines the traditional university lecture with computer aided delivery of homework and testing. While this model of emporium instruction was developed at Virginia Tech to deal with the burden of increased class sizes and increasing demands on faculty time, it has, in fact, proven to be an effective pedagogical method with advantages as compared to traditional lecture style instruction. We will argue that it also provides an economic alternative for less developed nations, with partiuclar benefits for the special problems faced by these universities.

Abstract: E-learning Management system is one of the special features of today's World Wide Web (WWW) which is known as Web 2.0. Research works in the field of E-Learning have presented a broad spectrum of applications, ranged from virtual classrooms to remote courses or distance learning. At anytime from anywhere around the world Webbased learning offers E-learners access to educational resources without any delay and difficulties. Due to various limitations of web 2.0 for creating E-learning management system, currently we use Web 3.0 which is known as Semantic web. It is a great platform to represent E-learning management system that recovers the limitations of Web 2.0. It represents a potential technology for supporting E-learning requirements. In this paper, we propose a model of E-learning Management System using semantic web and a namespace to represent a university on semantic web where course syllabus, teaching methods, learning activities and learning styles are included. This paper also provides a hierarchical content structure and semantic relationship between concepts that can provide related useful information for searching and sequencing learning resources in web-based E-learning systems.
