GALAPAGOS: From Pixels to Parameters  [PDF]

Abstract: To automate source detection, two-dimensional light-profile Sersic modelling and catalogue compilation in large survey applications, we introduce a new code GALAPAGOS, Galaxy Analysis over Large Areas: Parameter Assessment by GALFITting Objects from SExtractor. Based on a single setup, GALAPAGOS can process a complete set of survey images. It detects sources in the data, estimates a local sky background, cuts postage stamp images for all sources, prepares object masks, performs Sersic fitting including neighbours and compiles all objects in a final output catalogue. For the initial source detection GALAPAGOS applies SExtractor, while GALFIT is incorporated for modelling Sersic profiles. It measures the background sky involved in the Sersic fitting by means of a flux growth curve. GALAPAGOS determines postage stamp sizes based on SExtractor shape parameters. In order to obtain precise model parameters GALAPAGOS incorporates a complex sorting mechanism and makes use of modern CPU's multiplexing capabilities. It combines SExtractor and GALFIT data in a single output table. When incorporating information from overlapping tiles, GALAPAGOS automatically removes multiple entries from identical sources. GALAPAGOS is programmed in the Interactive Data Language, IDL. We test the stability and the ability to properly recover structural parameters extensively with artificial image simulations. Moreover, we apply GALAPAGOS successfully to the STAGES data set. For one-orbit HST data, a single 2.2 GHz CPU processes about 1000 primary sources per 24 hours. Note that GALAPAGOS results depend critically on the user-defined parameter setup. This paper provides useful guidelines to help the user make sensible choices.

Abstract: Although the Galapagos avifauna has been described previously, it is necessary to list, clarify, and update the previously published records of birds occurring in the archipelago, and to clarify some recent records that are erroneous or were presented with none or few details. The list of breeding (including endemic species and subspecies and non-endemic breeding species) and regular migrant species totals only 88 species, although including the 57 vagrant species, the number is 145 species. However, endemism in Galapagos is quite high, with half (50%) of the regular avifauna being endemic at the species or subspecies level. If only land birds are considered, the endemism levels are much higher, with 70% of land bird species being endemic, and 58% of the “regular” seabirds being endemic as well. It is hoped this article will stimulate other ornithologists and observers who may have additional records to come forth with their information.

Abstract: The urgency of the material stated in the article is caused by necessity of development, updating and improvements of methodical operating time on subject matters of issue "Calculus mathematics" which teaching is carried out in conditions of use of information-communication technologies. In the article the program realizations in Mathcad environment of Adams and Runge-Kutt methods of the approached decision of the differential equations are offered; examples on application of the specified methods are brought; the expediency of application of Mathcad environment during mathematical preparation of experts is proved. Perspective directions of the further scientific researches are methodical, mathematical and algorithmic aspects of creation of effective program realizations of numerical methods in Mathcad environment. Abstract: Plant invasions are causing habitat degradation in Galapagos. Problems are concentrated on the four inhabited islands. Plants introduced to rural areas in the humid highlands and urban areas on the arid coast act as foci for invasion of the surrounding Galapagos National Park.

Abstract: The role of disease in regulating populations is controversial, partly owing to the absence of good disease records in historic wildlife populations. We examined birds collected in the Galapagos Islands between 1891 and 1906 that are currently held at the California Academy of Sciences and the Zoologisches Staatssammlung Muenchen, including 3973 specimens representing species from two well-studied families of endemic passerine birds: finches and mockingbirds. Beginning with samples collected in 1899, we observed cutaneous lesions consistent with Avipoxvirus on 226 (6.3%) specimens. Histopathology and viral genotyping of 59 candidate tissue samples from six islands showed that 21 (35.6%) were positive for Avipoxvirus, while alternative diagnoses for some of those testing negative by both methods were feather follicle cysts, non-specific dermatitis, or post mortem fungal colonization. Positive specimens were significantly nonrandomly distributed among islands both for mockingbirds (San Cristobal vs. Espanola, Santa Fe and Santa Cruz) and for finches (San Cristobal and Isabela vs. Santa Cruz and Floreana), and overall highly significantly distributed toward islands that were inhabited by humans (San Cristobal, Isabela, Floreana) vs. uninhabited at the time of collection (Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Espanola), with only one positive individual on an uninhabited island. Eleven of the positive specimens sequenced successfully were identical at four diagnostic sites to the two canarypox variants previously described in contemporary Galapagos passerines. We conclude that this virus was introduced late in 1890′s and was dispersed among islands by a variety of mechanisms, including regular human movements among colonized islands. At present, this disease represents an ongoing threat to the birds on the Galapagos Islands.

Abstract: Galapagos Research Centre d. o. o., is a private research organization, active in the field of chemistry, biology, biomedicine, veterinary science and pharmacy. This article is devoted to the Internationa Year of Chemistry; this review includes the areas of study undertaken by the chemists in the research centre. Also presented are the current techniques and technologies applied in the implementation of research and development projects.The main activities of chemists are directed to the synthesis of new organic compounds resulting in potentially new medicines, their subsequent identification, structural characterization, purification process, magnification (scale up), the applied analysis of biological materials (DMPK – Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics) and the pharmaceutical development of preclinical candidates.Project teams at Galapagos incorporate researchers of all relevant professions to explore the potential of new medicines. These include chemists (chemical engineers and technologists), biologists, medical doctors, veterinarians and pharmacists. The ultimate goal of each of the projects is to establish an effective, well-defined preclinical candidate, which is further developed in other parts of the organization (Belgium, France, Great Britain), otherwise in the development laboratories of large partner organizations.This research article includes research and technology supported by concrete examples, and the results published in previous articles.

The mathematical models of the fishing effort for river, lake, sea beach seines and peculiar properties of their practical definition are presented. Particular attention is paid to the economic indicators of fishing effort and an example of their calculations is given.

Abstract: This work is product of the Project "The time of the plant: the disciplinamento of the workers of the fishing industry (óbidos-Pará): a comparative study", developed in the years of 2002 and 2003 in the municipality of óbidos, Pará, objectifying to understand the importance of the time in the disciplinamento of the work in the obidense fishing company. Interviews opened in entrepreneurs had been carried through of fish, controlling, heads of quality control, people in charge of hall and other actors involved in the sector fishing boat and applied half-open questionnaires with laborers and fishing. One used the photographic, recording register and the notebook of notations. The research was carried through in the fishing companies Mundial and Pasquarelli, Colony Z-19 Fishing, in the boats (river Amazon) of the artisan fishing and in its residences. As central focus it was looked for to unmask the characteristics of the 'disciplined time' in the sector of improvement of the fishing company, and to detach the joint of the 'natural time' in the process of capture of the fished one. Leaving of these estimated, it was used the 'disciplined time' and the 'natural time' conceived by Thompson (1975).

Abstract: To offer theses electronically to its users is something that has been discussed in Swiss university libraries for some time now. There are two main reasons that it has not yet been realized anywhere in Switzerland: On the one hand, the two large university library networks have had big library system migrations to cope with (first the Réseau Romand” in the French speaking part moved to VTLS, then, in the last two years, the Informationsverbund Deutschschweiz, IDS” in the German speaking part switched to Aleph by Ex Libris). These migrations used up all available personnel resources. On the other hand, the federalist organization of all things politic in Switzerland, including the university system, means that there are hardly any national programmes to further and finance projects on a national level (or cantonal, for that matter) - in contrast to most other European countries where such programmes have proved to be a very strong incentive for developing various aspects of the digital library.

Abstract: In this study , the semiconductor lighting technology with advantages of energy saving, environmental protection and high rapid response speed is regarded as the fishing light source, which can achieve targets of energy conservation, emission reduction, environmental protection, scientific fishing, etc. Then, the characteristics of LED are described to conduct a comparative analysis with the metal halide light source which has been commonly used in fishing light. The results show that LED is more suitable to be used as the fishing light source.
