Collaboration, Coproduction, and Code-Switching: Colonial Cinema and Postcolonial Archaeology  [cached]
Nayoung Aimee Kwon
Cross-Currents : East Asian History and Culture Review , 2012,
Abstract: This article reassesses the issue of colonial collaboration in the Japanese empire by examining the rise of cinematic coproductions between Japanese and Korean filmmakers. By the late 1930s, colonial Korea’s filmmaking industry had been fully subsumed into the Japanese film industry, and regulations were established that required all films to assimilate imperial policies. The colonial government’s active promotion of colonial “collaboration” and “coproduction” between the colonizers and the colonized ideologically worked to obfuscate these increasing restrictions in colonial film productions while producing complex and contentious desires across the colonial divide. The very concepts of “collaboration” and “coproduction” need to be redefined in light of increasingly complex imperial hierarchies and entanglements. Taking the concept of “code-switching” beyond its linguistic origins, this article argues that we must reassess texts of colonial collaboration and coproduction produced at a time when Korean film had to “code-switch” into Japanese—to linguistically, culturally, and politically align itself with the wartime empire. The article argues that recently excavated films from colonial and Cold War archives, such as Spring in the Korean Peninsula, offer a rare glimpse into repressed and contested histories and raise the broader conundrum of accessing and assessing uneasily commingled colonial pasts of Asian-Pacific nations in the ruins of postcolonial aftermath.
Comparison of heuristics for an economic lot scheduling problem with deliberated coproduction  [cached]

Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management , 2009, DOI: 10.3926/jiem..v2n3.p437-463
Abstract: We built on the Economic Lot Scheduling Problem Scheduling (ELSP) literature by making some modifications in order to introduce new constraints which had not been thoroughly studied with a view to simulating specific real situations. Specifically, our aim is to propose and simulate different scheduling policies for a new ELSP variant: Deliberated Coproduction. This problem comprises a product system in an ELSP environment in which we may choose if more than one product can be produced on the machine at a given time. We expressly consider the option of coproducing two products whose demand is not substitutable. In order to draw conclusions, a simulation model and its results were developed in the article by employing modified Bomberger data which include two items that could be produced simultaneously.

Abstract: Before proposing an innovative process for the coproduction of ethyl and butyl acetates, the individual syntheses of ethyl acetate and butyl acetate by two different routes were first studied. These syntheses involved the reaction of ethanol or n-butanol with acetic acid or acetic anhydride in the presence of ion exchange resins: Amberlyst 15, Amberlyst 16, Amberlyst 36 and Dowex 50WX8. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies were performed with all resins. The lowest activation energy (Ea) value was obtained with Dowex 50WX8, which was identified as the best-performing resin, able to be reused at least in four runs without regeneration. The presence of water-azeotropes during the synthesis of ethyl acetate makes its purification difficult. A new strategy was adopted here, involving the use of ethanol and acetic anhydride as the starting material. In order to minimize acetic acid as co-product of this reaction, a novel two-step process for the coproduction of ethyl and butyl acetates was developed. The first step involves the production of ethyl acetate and its purification. Butyl acetate was produced in the second step: n-butanol was added to the mixture of acetic acid and the resin remaining after the first-step distillation. This process yields ethyl acetate and butyl acetate at high purity and shows an environmental benefit over the independent syntheses by green metrics calculation and life cycle assessment.
Public policies of crime prevention and control involve many professionals at the local level : police chiefs and officers, judges, local government and charitable organizations, etc. In order to manage more effectively the complex inter-relationships, which developed between these organizations, a doctrine of public action known as ”joint security responsibility” gradually emerged. Since the early 1980s, public authorities have set up many partnerships to encourage the different parties to share their experiences, define common objectives, exchange know-how and resources, and coordinate their actions. Although many attempts at cooperation have been successful, with regular positive exchanges between institutions, most of the time the relationships between the parties have not evolved. Differences of opinions, values, and methods of action hinder collaboration at the local level. Professionals may talk, get together or appeal to one another as the need arises, in particular in emergency situations, however their exchanges are often sporadic, get weaker as time goes by and/or simply aim at defending their own interests and usual practices.

[English] This article presents some results of an exploratory descriptive research based on a case study, aiming to identify teaching methods appropriate to social constructivist learning environments in a blended online course. We carried out a qualitative analysis of the interactions between the teacher and the seven students of a higher education Arts and Social Sciences course, in a francophone Canadian university, using recordings of eight periods of the synchronous classes to identify general trends and teaching methods suited to this new context.
Nicolas Legoff
EchoGéo , 2010,
Abstract: Le second Parc Naturel marin fran ais a été officialisé à Mayotte en janvier 2010. The 2nd french Marine Protected Area was officially created in Mayotte in January 2010, thanks both to a swift procedure and to a strong determined policy. It clearly shows the will of France to manage a broad area in south-west of the Indian Ocean even if its means of action are still to settle. Beyond environemental protection, the park is seen as a useful tool for an island still considered as emergent. From fishing to tourism, many activities hope to take advantage from the dynamic set in motion.

Geografares , 2012,

The purpose of this paper is to present an original pedagogical process, implemented during a specialized translation course promoting a social constructivist approach to mediated learning through the use of an essentially linguistic cognitive tool such as a social bookmarking service. We will study how the discovery of vocabulary for specific purposes through authentic documents and the acquisition of both its linguistic and pragmatic aspects is involved in this process. In the first part, the definitions of social bookmarking and folksonomies and their impact on online learning will be considered. Then, the methodological, linguistic and pragmatic issues pertaining to the use of specific features of the tool used (Diigo) during the tasks will be examined in detail. Finally, the pedagogical approach will be shown to reflect social tagging’s potential as a new tool for Personal Knowledge Management and new perspectives of co-construction, co-expertise and sharing knowledge, leading to a collective intelligence for professional purposes.
