Miss South Carolina: a pragma-dialectical analysis
Critóbal Joannon
Onomázein : Revista de Lingüística, Filología y Traducción , 2010,
Abstract: This text presents an argumentative analysis of a very well-known interaction –a so-called “YouTube phenomenon”– that a candidate of a Beauty Contest gave when she was asked about the reason why a fifth of American people is not able to locate the U.S. in a World map. This analysis uses the Pragma-dialectical approach to argumentative discourse in its dialectical and rethorical dimensions, and shows what powerful it is in order to decipher and evaluate the argumentative structure of a muddled discourse.

(This paper seeks to show te reach of pragma-dialectics by describing and analyzing speakers' competence in the identification of fallacies in argumentative speech. The corpus selected comprises a set of sixty seven letters by 35 different authors written in response to an opinion column by Agustín Squella entitled " Es Ud. católico?" ("Are you a Catholic?"). Fallacies were analyzed in all letters answering the question and recognition markers were searched for such fallacies. Results indicate that speakers are capable of identifying and rejecting fallacies as arguments but this does not occur in most cases. "Ad hominem" is the most recognized and also the most widely used fallacy.)

This article deals with the difficulties that may arise when classroom oral argumentation focuses on controversial ethical issues, such the legalization of euthanasia in Chile. In analyzing the turn-takings of an 11th-grade Spanish Language and Communication class in a simulated debate about euthanasia, while the learning unit "Argumentation" was being covered, it was observed that the students found hard to grasp the most complex concepts and to establish the required distinctions. To identify the problems that the students encounter when they had to argue orally, the argumentative structure of their turn-takings was analyzed, using the pragma-dialectical approach, and the students' arguments were compared with the most frequent philosophical arguments on this issue. The findings show the students' pitfalls in conducting a "critical discussion" and, at the same time, they account for the teachers' inexperience to distinguish between an ethical (or deontological) argumentation and a pragmatic argumentation.

As a rational social activity of sharing information, observing the world and finding out the truth among human beings, journalistic activity is closely connected with argumentative thinking and practice, this is especially the case in present network society. On the basis of literature review, the paper studies journalism from the perspective of argumentation theory, to be specific, with the approach of pragma-dialectics. With this paradigm, the journalistic activity was taken as a critical discussion between journalistic subjects, and the propagating subjects as well as the receiving subjects included were seen as protagonists and antagonists respectively. What’s more, the accountabilities from both sides are strongly emphasized and certain rules are developed to be followed. The paper points out that the final realization of news authenticity benefits from critical discussions among journalistic subjects.

Abstract: ln pragma-dialectics, argumentative discourse is a process which solves a differenceof opinión. the ideal model for resolving this difference iscalled 'critical discussion' and presents four stages: confrontation, opening, argu-mentation, and closing (van eemeren & grootendorst, 1992). ln this study we will focuson the confrontation stage and wewilltryto identify the resources used by students comparing different oral discussions. it should be noted thatstudents do notaccountsufficiently this phase and thustheir discourse evidence a low use oflinguistic-discursive resources toapproach the dispute, especially thosetopics related to bioethics.

Modelling Contractual Arguments  [PDF]
Chris Reed,Aspassia Daskalopulu

Abstract: One influential approach to assessing the "goodness" of arguments is offered by the Pragma-Dialectical school (p-d) (Eemeren & Grootendorst 1992). This can be compared with Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) (Mann & Thompson 1988), an approach that originates in discourse analysis. In p-d terms an argument is good if it avoids committing a fallacy, whereas in RST terms an argument is good if it is coherent. RST has been criticised (Snoeck Henkemans 1997) for providing only a partially functional account of argument, and similar criticisms have been raised in the Natural Language Generation (NLG) community-particularly by Moore & Pollack (1992)- with regards to its account of intentionality in text in general. Mann and Thompson themselves note that although RST can be successfully applied to a wide range of texts from diverse domains, it fails to characterise some types of text, most notably legal contracts. There is ongoing research in the Artificial Intelligence and Law community exploring the potential for providing electronic support to contract negotiators, focusing on long-term, complex engineering agreements (see for example Daskalopulu & Sergot 1997). This paper provides a brief introduction to RST and illustrates its shortcomings with respect to contractual text. An alternative approach for modelling argument structure is presented which not only caters for contractual text, but also overcomes the aforementioned limitations of RST.

Abstract: The Pacific Rim Application and Grid Middleware Assembly (PRAGMA) is an international community of researchers that actively collaborate to address problems and challenges of common interest in eScience. The PRAGMA Experimental Network Testbed (PRAGMA-ENT) was established with the goal of constructing an international software-defined network (SDN) testbed to offer the necessary networking support to the PRAGMA cyberinfrastructure. PRAGMA-ENT is isolated, and PRAGMA researchers have complete freedom to access network resources to develop, experiment, and evaluate new ideas without the concerns of interfering with production networks. In the first phase, PRAGMA-ENT focused on establishing an international L2 backbone. With support from the Florida Lambda Rail (FLR), Internet2, PacificWave, JGN-X, and TWAREN, PRAGMA-ENT backbone connects Open\-Flow-enabled switches at University of Florida (UF), University of California San Diego (UCSD), Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST, Japan), Osaka University (Japan), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST, Japan), and National Center for High-Performance Computing (Taiwan). The second phase of PRAGMA-ENT consisted of evaluation of technologies for the control plane that enables multiple experiments (i.e., OpenFlow controllers) to co-exist. Preliminary experiments with FlowVisor revealed some limitations leading to the development of a new approach, called AutoVFlow. This paper will share our experience in the establishment of PRAGMA-ENT backbone (with international L2 links), its current status, and control plane plans. Discussion on preliminary application ideas, including optimization of routing control; multipath routing control; and remote visualization will also be discussed.
Frans Maurits Jaeger: een chemicus als historicus

Tijdschrift voor de Geschiedenis der Geneeskunde, Natuurwetenschappen, Wiskunde en Techniek , 1984,
Abstract: Frans Maurits Jaeger: a chemist as a historian F.M. Jaeger (1877-1945) worked from 1908 till his death as a professor in non-organic chemistry at the Groningen university. In the period around 1918 he showed a great interest in the history of chemistry. This resulted in a number of publications on this subject, which show all the characteristics of Jaeger's approach to science. He was a positivist scientist, who stressed the importance of experimentation. He used the important developments in contemporary chemistry, especially the theory of atomic structure and the elements, to assess the merits of past chemists. Although he claimed to rate every historical period at its true value, he was in fact exalting the chemistry of his own time.
