(This paper seeks to show te reach of pragma-dialectics by describing and analyzing speakers' competence in the identification of fallacies in argumentative speech. The corpus selected comprises a set of sixty seven letters by 35 different authors written in response to an opinion column by Agustín Squella entitled " Es Ud. católico?" ("Are you a Catholic?"). Fallacies were analyzed in all letters answering the question and recognition markers were searched for such fallacies. Results indicate that speakers are capable of identifying and rejecting fallacies as arguments but this does not occur in most cases. "Ad hominem" is the most recognized and also the most widely used fallacy.)

Abstract: The Pacific Rim Application and Grid Middleware Assembly (PRAGMA) is an international community of researchers that actively collaborate to address problems and challenges of common interest in eScience. The PRAGMA Experimental Network Testbed (PRAGMA-ENT) was established with the goal of constructing an international software-defined network (SDN) testbed to offer the necessary networking support to the PRAGMA cyberinfrastructure. PRAGMA-ENT is isolated, and PRAGMA researchers have complete freedom to access network resources to develop, experiment, and evaluate new ideas without the concerns of interfering with production networks. In the first phase, PRAGMA-ENT focused on establishing an international L2 backbone. With support from the Florida Lambda Rail (FLR), Internet2, PacificWave, JGN-X, and TWAREN, PRAGMA-ENT backbone connects Open\-Flow-enabled switches at University of Florida (UF), University of California San Diego (UCSD), Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST, Japan), Osaka University (Japan), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST, Japan), and National Center for High-Performance Computing (Taiwan). The second phase of PRAGMA-ENT consisted of evaluation of technologies for the control plane that enables multiple experiments (i.e., OpenFlow controllers) to co-exist. Preliminary experiments with FlowVisor revealed some limitations leading to the development of a new approach, called AutoVFlow. This paper will share our experience in the establishment of PRAGMA-ENT backbone (with international L2 links), its current status, and control plane plans. Discussion on preliminary application ideas, including optimization of routing control; multipath routing control; and remote visualization will also be discussed.
Miss South Carolina: a pragma-dialectical analysis
Critóbal Joannon
Onomázein : Revista de Lingüística, Filología y Traducción , 2010,
Abstract: This text presents an argumentative analysis of a very well-known interaction –a so-called “YouTube phenomenon”– that a candidate of a Beauty Contest gave when she was asked about the reason why a fifth of American people is not able to locate the U.S. in a World map. This analysis uses the Pragma-dialectical approach to argumentative discourse in its dialectical and rethorical dimensions, and shows what powerful it is in order to decipher and evaluate the argumentative structure of a muddled discourse.
Pragma-semantische Analysen zur Erforschung interkultureller Kommunikation Pragma-semantic Analysis for Researching Intercultural Communication Análisis semántico-pragmático para investigar la comunicación intercultural

Abstract: Auf Basis von Ernst E. BOESCHs "Symbolic Action Theory" (1991), und der relationalen Hermeneutik von STRAUB und SHIMADA (1999) sowie der Grounded-Theory-Methodologie (GLASER & STRAUSS 1967; STRAUSS & CORBIN 1990) wird ein integrativer Ansatz zur Analyse (inter-) kultureller Handlungs- und Bedeutungszusammenh nge vorgestellt. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0901373 Based on Ernst E. BOESCH's symbolic action theory (1991), the concept of relational hermeneutics (STRAUB & SHIMADA, 1999; STRAUB, 2006) and within the framework of grounded theory methodology (GLASER & STRAUSS, 1967; STRAUSS & CORBIN, 1990) this paper presents an integrative approach to the analysis of complex (inter)cultural action and meaning relations. The objective of pragma-semantic analysis is the identification, differentiation and contextualization of phenomena by analyzing performed as well as potentially possible actions and objectivations. Pragma-semantic analysis tries to reveal from which sources resp. pools of symbols individually as well as collectively available denotative and connotative aspects of actions derived. Further it can be utilized to show how these meanings come to bear in interactions that—through the analysis—have to be identified as intercultural in the first place. Using the empirical example of a German tourist's narrative of her interaction with beggars in India, the paper will outline the approach and show to what extent the pragma-semantic web also allows conclusions on action-possiblities and potential meaning
A Pragma-stylistic Analysis of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Inaugural Speech  [cached]

English Language Teaching , 2012, DOI: 10.5539/elt.v5n11p8
Abstract: The study was an examination through the pragma-stylistic approach to meaning of the linguistic acts that manifest in the Inaugural Speech of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as the democratically elected president in May 2011 General Elections in Nigeria. Hence, the study focused on speech acts type of locution, illocutionary and perlocutionary in the speech. It is therefore part of the objectives of the study to find out which of the speech acts are more prominent based on the Speech Act theory of Austin (1962) and Searle (1969). The first Twenty (20) Sentences were extracted from the speech text, from which forty (40) speech acts were derived. The findings revealed thus; assertive – 55%, directive – 10%, verdictive – 15%, commisive – 75% and declarative – 45%. These results showed that President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan relied more on sentences that performed commissive acts than other speech acts in his Inaugural Speech. This demonstrated that politicians are apt to show appreciation to people after victory at the polls. Hence, the speech act analysis assists in the interpretation of the messages in the selected speech.

Abstract: this article deals with the difficulties that may arise when classroom oral argumentation focuses on controversial ethical issues, such the legalization of euthanasia in chile. in analyzing the turn-takings of an 11th-grade spanish language and communication class in a simulated debate about euthanasia, while the learning unit "argumentation" was being covered, it was observed that the students found hard to grasp the most complex concepts and to establish the required distinctions. to identify the problems that the students encounter when they had to argue orally, the argumentative structure of their turn-takings was analyzed, using the pragma-dialectical approach, and the students' arguments were compared with the most frequent philosophical arguments on this issue. the findings show the students' pitfalls in conducting a "critical discussion" and, at the same time, they account for the teachers' inexperience to distinguish between an ethical (or deontological) argumentation and a pragmatic argumentation.

This article deals with the difficulties that may arise when classroom oral argumentation focuses on controversial ethical issues, such the legalization of euthanasia in Chile.

Abstract: oral argumentation in the classroom is an area of study that requires analytical tools to address its complexity. in this study a pragma-dialectical approach is used, in which dialectical and rhetorical analysis is used to examine the interaction of a group of eleventh grade students in an educational institution in the city of vina del mar (chile), as they express their points of view and arguments about a controversial issue in a 45 minute spanish class. in terms of the dialectical dimension, results show that, although the students met with the confrontation and argumentation stages of critical discussions, they did not include the opening and closure stages. in terms of the rhetoric dimension, they use strategic maneuvers when they include new topics appealing to diverse audiences, as well as some presentational devices such as rhetorical figures.

As a rational social activity of sharing information, observing the world and finding out the truth among human beings, journalistic activity is closely connected with argumentative thinking and practice, this is especially the case in present network society. On the basis of literature review, the paper studies journalism from the perspective of argumentation theory, to be specific, with the approach of pragma-dialectics. With this paradigm, the journalistic activity was taken as a critical discussion between journalistic subjects, and the propagating subjects as well as the receiving subjects included were seen as protagonists and antagonists respectively. What’s more, the accountabilities from both sides are strongly emphasized and certain rules are developed to be followed. The paper points out that the final realization of news authenticity benefits from critical discussions among journalistic subjects.
