Abstract: determinations of fruit setting were made in a fertilizer trial that is being carried out at the esta??o experimental de ribeir?o prêto. this experiment is a factorial 24 with four replications, the basic treatments being 10 kg of "estêrco" (e), 0.2 kg of ammonium sulphate (n), 0.2 kg of bone meal (p) and 0.1 kg of potassium chloride (k). fruits were counted in november of 1953 and 1954, soon after flowering, and also in february of the following years, when the fruits were already well developed. by fruit setting it is meant the ratio between fruit numbers in november and february, although counting was made at 15-day intervals between these two dates. in 1953/54 the percentage of fruit setting was determined for one plant in each of the four replications of treatments e, en, ep and ek. one plant in each replication of treatments np, en, enk and enpk was studied in 1954/55. for each plant in both seasons, six flowering branches were used, two at the higher part of the coffee plant, two at the base and two in intermediate positions. from the results obtained it is concluded that chemical fertilizers may contribute significantly to increase the percentage of fruit setting. together with "estêrco" (stable manure), phosphorus showed a 3.5 per cent increase over "estêrco" alone. comparing treatments with and without potash an increase of 8.1 per cent was found for plots receiving this fertilizer in 1954/55. it is also concluded that significant differences were observed in fruit setting at different levels of the plant, in favor of the higher branches. fruit setting showed no correlation with total yield of ripened fruits.

Abstract: subtropical peaches and nectarines pollen storage, germination and fruit set were studied. the results showed that the pollen stored in a desiccator at 0 ± 1 °c maintained high germination rates - over 70% - for 60 days; under room temperature (25 + 2dc) the pollen lost rapidly their viability after the 3th day of storage. the best in vitro pollen germination - 89% - occurred on nutrient media of murashige & skoog, 5% sacarose and 0,7% agar. the highest percentages of fruit set - over 50% - were obtained by jóia-1, ouromel-3, aurora-1, aurora-2, flordaprince cultivars and iac 680-13 and iac 680-178 hybrids. the male sterility was observed in the iac n1574-25 nectarine.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of different interstock lengths on the vigor of 'jubileu' peach plants. interstocks with 5, 10, 15 and 20-cm length, from the low-vigor cultivar granada, were used. vegetative growth, flowering and effective fructification were evaluated. the experiment was carried out from march-2007 to december-2008 at pelotas, rs, brazil. the vegetative growth of 'jubileu' peach orchard was directly related to the interstock length. increases in interstock length anticipate the onset of flowering and full anthesis. vigor reduction induced by longer interstocks increases floral differentiation. interstock with 20-cm length promotes the highest reduction in plant vigor, but also increases plant mortality. therefore, the 10 and 15-cm interstocks are the most suitable for high-density orchards.

Abstract: the irapuá trigona spinipes is considered a pest insect of several crops because it feeds on their leaves, flowers and fruits. the aim of this study was to characterize the damage caused by irapuá on blueberry flowers (vaccinium ashei) over the fruit set and fruit quality. the experiment was conducted in a blueberry collection of embrapa clima temperado, in pelotas, rs. two hundred flowers were observed, being one hundred of them with irapuá damage and the other 100 flowers without damage. the fruit set was recorded as well as the level of soluble solids (tss), the fruit diameter and number of seeds at the time of harvesting. a completely randomized design was used. flowers without irapuá damage showed a higher percentage of fruit set and the produced fruit had a greater diameter and larger quantities of seeds. the tss content on the fruits from flowers with or without irapuá damage was similar. these results suggest that t. spinipes is harmful to the blueberry culture, mainly at time of flowering, because the inset damage causes low fruit set and the production of small fruits with less seeds
