Abstract: background: the scoliometer was developed to analyze the axial rotation of the trunk in patients with idiopathic scoliosis. however, there is controversy regarding the reliability of the measures obtained with this device. objectives: to test the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the scoliometer in patients with scoliosis. methods: 24 volunteers of both sex with idiopathic scoliosis diagnostic (18±4 years-old) and curvatures with mean and standard deviation of 24.8±12.7o cobb. the measurement procedure was accomplished in one day by two trained examiners. the palpation and determination of each spinal level was accomplished by just one examiner. each examiner obtained one measure with the device for each vertebra from the thoracic and lumbar levels in each evaluation. for statistical analysis the measurements were divided by spinal levels into upper thorax, medium thorax, lower thorax and lumbar segments. the intraclass correlation coefficient type 1,1 (icc1,1) was used to determine the intra-rater reliability while the icc3,1 was used to determine the inter-rater reliability. results: the observed intra-rater reliability values for the medium and lower thorax and lumbar segments of the subjects ranged from very good to excellent. the inter-rater reliability of the measures of axial trunk rotations was considered good to the upper thorax and excellent for the medium and lower thorax and lumbar spine. conclusions: the scoliometer is a device that has intra-rater reliability estimates ranging from very good to excellent. the inter-rater reliability for the upper and low thorax and for the lumbar spine is relatively lower than the intra-rater values for the same spinal segments, even when the errors from palpation and positioning of the instrument were eliminated.

Acta Scientiarum : Health Sciences , 2007,
The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra and inter-observer reliability in the anthropometric measures of three expert observers through the technical error of measure (TEM). For this end, 21 healthy volunteers (25.7 ± 7.5 years) took part in the study, being 12 males and 9 females. The following aspects were analyzed: body weigh (kg), stature (cm), circumferences (cm) of relaxed right arm, abdomen, hip and thigh, and skinfold thickness (mm) of triceps, subescapular, supra-iliac, abdomen, thigh and calf medial. The measures were made in 2 different days, always in the afternoon, with the same equipments and in the same volunteers. The results pointed the occurrence of TEMs out of the recommended patterns, in both intra-observer and inter-observers variability. This fact showed the importance and need of specific training of the observers.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to verify the inter-assessment reproducibility of heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in exercise with different cadences during deep water running. In a comparative and correlational study, twenty physically active college students (aged 21.10 ± 1.68 yr, body mass 68.90 ± 7.24 kg, height 174.60 ± 5.35 cm, Σ7SF 106.80 ± 28.63 mm) were assessed twice by two different evaluators in a 12-stage sub maximal protocol of deep water running at initial intensity of 100 cycles per minute with an increment of four cycle per minute (E1 – E12). HR and RPE measures were registered at each stage. Reproducibility was analyzed by Pearson linear coefficient (r) and intraclass correlation (ICC), and Wilcoxon test. No significant differences were found among evaluators’ measures for the resting (p > .05), basal (p > .05) and recovery (p > .05) heart rate. Significant differences (p < .05) were found for RPE in E1, E5, E7, E8 and E9 stages. Inter-assessment correlations were significant (r > .60, ICC95% > .60). The results show good intra-assessment reproducibility for HR and RPE at different cadences, indicating that the protocol has professional application.

Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology , 1998,
Abstract: Lichen nitidus occurs uncommonly on the palms and soles and has an unusual morphology at these sites. Two patients who presented with lesions on the palms and soles are reported. The first patient had rough papules with prominent keratotic plugs. In the second patient, the lesion was an irregular plaque with peripheral papules showing keratotic plugs. Both patients had typical lesions elsewhere on the body. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. Awareness of this variant will help in prompt recognition of the condition.

Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology , 1997,
Abstract: Clinically it is sometimes difficult to differentiate the various hyperkeratosis of palms and soles like psoriasis of palms and soles, pustulosis palmaris et plantaris, hyperkeratotic tinea and hyperkeratotic eczema. To differentiate amongst these conditions we have to take the help of histopathology. Here we are presenting the data of 292 cases of hyperkeratosis of palms &soles examined histologically by doing Haematoxylin and Eosin staining for the typical changes of the above mentioned conditions and PAS for the demonstration of the fungus in stratum corneum in cases of hyperkeratotic tinea.

Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology , 1997,
Abstract: Typical lesions of hyperkeratosis of palms and soles do not create any problem but when slight variation is there it becomes difficult to diagnose and that changes the line of treatment. For that we have studied 300 fresh cases of hyperkeratosis of palms and soles which included 110 cases of hyperkeratotic eczema. 42 cases of hyperkeratotic tinea, 64 cases of psoriasis of palms and soles and 84 cases of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP). To reach the final diagnosis alongwith the detailed history, general physical examination and routine investigations, help was taken of special investigations like pus for culture and sensitivity, KOH smear examination of skin scrapings and nail cutting and culture on Sabouraud′s dextrose agar medium.
