Regina Crispim e Rogério Santana
Signótica , 2009, DOI: 10.5216/sig.v21i1.8625
Abstract: This article analyses two episodes from the novel Grande sert o: Veredas, written by Jo o Guimar es Rosa: Zé Bebelo’s judgment and the pact made by Riobaldo. In the first episode, one examines the peculiar society constituted in the “sert o” by “coronéis” and “jagun os”; in the second one, the notion of pact is broadened beyond the symbolic deal made with the devil, showing its development as strategies of survival in an environment in which the apparent disorder reveals itself as the essence of the order devised and kept by violence.

Seligmann-Silva, Márcio;
Alea : Estudos Neolatinos , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-106X2009000100011
Abstract: the work presents a interpretation of jo?o guimar?es rosa novel from 1956 from the point of view of some topoi developed inside the theories of testimony and confession: riobaldo witnesses some moments of his life before a listener/reader. the violence of "sert?o", a consequence of the play between anomie and force, unfolds itself in the anguish derived from the impossible love to diadorim. as in many other texts with strong "testimonial tenor", the memory fragmentation and its spacialization guide the narrative stream. the work built a "topography of memory" that is analysed as a simulation of a traumatic memory. oscillating between testimony and confession, the text authorizes a reading of the literary work functioning as the mise en scène of a memory of a catastrophe. the question of the intrinsic relation between law and violence, as much as the spectacle of the body in pain, that we can also read in this novel, are other characteristics of testimonial acts. the essay presents too the falocentric element that is present both in confession and testimony as well as in this book. it is showed that the presentation of all those testimonial and confessional elements inside a sophisticated work of fiction send also a new light over those topoi.

ENVEREDANDO: EXPERIêNCIA E MEMóRIA ATRAVéS DO CONTAR DE GRANDE SERT O
Renata Code?o Dias
Macabéa : Revista Eletr?nica do Netlli , 2012,
Abstract: The article presents a brief analysis of the narrative effects of the book Grande Sert o: Veredas, by Guimar es Rosa (translated as The Devil to Pay in the Backlands, by James L. Taylor e Harriet de Onís. New York: Knopf, 1963), as a work of thought about memory and construction of experience through telling. The notion of experience that comes from reading the work is compared to what Walter Benjamin conceptualized as a narrative of collective experience (Erfahrung), which seems to set in motion the impersonal and creative memory, subsuming the concept of the modern subject, whose personal and psychological experience is at stake, as is his interpersonal communication. Thus, Rosa, through the narrative character Riobaldo, makes of the telling a phenomenon of worlds opening and creation, in a contemporary context of declining importance of oral and living history, and the closure of experience as individuality.
Vida e teatro em Guimar?es Rosa: Grande sert?o: veredas e pirlimpsiquice
Bolognesi, Mário Fernando;
Trans/Form/A??o , 1985, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31731985000100005
Abstract: this article is introduced with a summarized discussion on the "theater's metaphor" as considered by plato. it goes on considering several turning points in the literature history and investigating the different uses of the metaphoric process in guimar?es rosa "grande sert?o: veredas" and "pirlimpsiquice". firt of all, in "grande sert?o" life is considered as a simbolic equivalent to actors performance in the stage: theater and life are seen, therefore, as concerning fields which identities can be stated upon christian religious doctrine and plotino's philosophy. on the other hand, in "pirlimpsiquice", guimar?es rosa points that the limits between life and theater fields can be sharply identified, leading to the conclusion that the different degrees of use of the metaphoric process is due to historical and cultural practices. based on the theoric controversy between hegel's and plato's points of view on art's philosophy, the author concludes that the notions of "performance in the stage" and "performance in life" are sintetized under the continuous dialectic movement of history and culture.

Jagun?os e homens livres pobres: o lugar do mito no Grande sert?o
Pacheco, Ana Paula;
Novos Estudos - CEBRAP , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-33002008000200013
Abstract: based on guimar?es rosa's creation of the "jagun?o-world", between myth and history, this essay seeks to understand the constitution of both, the narrator and the characters in grande sert?o: veredas [the devil to pay in the backlands]. it concentrates itself on the fictional formation of the "jagun?o", whose verisimilitude is localized in the difficulties of the inlander life and in the idealization of the attempts to outstrip them. finally, the paper aims to understand the formal law of the characters' (de)formation - to be a myth or not to be ó in contrast with the historic figuration of the "free poor man", in order to interpret guimar?es rosa's reading of the brazilian modernity in the backlands.
