The Architectural Expression of Space and Form Created by the Light in the Works of Alvaro Siza  [PDF]

Journal of Building Construction and Planning Research (JBCPR) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jbcpr.2014.22011
Abstract: The light is an important element which helps people perceive objects. Therefore, it is important for architects to make the light and space be in harmony with each other. In this study, we analyzed the works of Alvaro Siza with a view to understand the conceptual value of the light expressed in his works and his principles in controlling it. According to the results of the study, the Siza’s architecture is not a mere theoretical one trapped inside formality, but is a sensual and experiential one based on the locality. He was willing to use void spaces to invite the light in free-flowing plans, in order to invigorate and extend architectural spatiality to create deeper visual effect. In addition, the refined light in his works helped visitors experience the continuous forms and spaces by their own movements, while using the changes of the light to stimulate the interest of visitors and highlight the sequence of spaces.
THE INSPECTION OF THE TEMPORARY PRESS COMMITTEE IN VILNIUS IN 1914
Patrusheva, Natalija
Knygotyra , 2006,
Abstract: This article brings to notice a document discovered in the Russian State Historical Archive which relates to the inspection made by the Temporary Press Committee in Vilnius in 1914. A short description is given of the inspections made by the censorship department, with main reference to the organization of the censorship in Vilnius on the eve of the First World War: a profile is given of the Committee’s officials, with details for each censor of his education, income, and duties within the Committee. Particular attention is paid to the relations between individual members of the Committee. Analysis of the material on the inspection of 1914 and its findings reveals the problems encountered when appointing censors at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Thue's 1914 paper: a translation  [PDF]
James F. Power
Computer Science , 2013,
Abstract: This paper includes notes to accompany a reading of Thue's 1914 paper "Probleme uber Veranderungen von Zeichenreihen nach gegebenen Reglen", along with a translation of that paper. Thue's 1914 paper is mainly famous for proving an early example of an undecidable problem, cited prominently by Post. However, Post's paper principally makes use of the definition of Thue systems, described on the first two pages of Thue's paper, and does not depend on the more specific results in the remainder of Thue's paper. A closer study of the remaining parts of that paper highlight a number of important themes in the history of computing: the transition from algebra to formal language theory, the analysis of the "computational power" (in a pre-1936 sense) of rules, and the development of algorithms to generate rule-sets.
THE RAILWAYS AND THE WAR EFFORT, 1914-1915  [cached]
R.J. Bouch
Scientia Militaria : South African Journal of Military Studies , 2012, DOI: 10.5787/4-4-903
Abstract: Political and administrative backgroundSubsequent to the creation of the Union of South Africa in 1910, steps were taken to combine the armed forces of the four excolonies in the new Union Defence Forces. Appropriate legislation was provided in the Defence Act of 1912. Considerable time was needed before all the provisos of the Act could be implemented, and the outbreak of war in August 1914 found the infant Defence Forces incomplete and unprepared for a task of the magnitude confronting them. One specific area where arrangements were inadequate was that of railway transport.
An Evaluation of Light Distribution in the Exhibition Areas of the Mimesis Art Museum Designed by Alvaro Siza  [PDF]
Chang Sung Kim
Journal of Building Construction and Planning Research (JBCPR) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jbcpr.2014.24021
Abstract: The works of Alvaro Siza have been referred that they were not the theoretical architecture but the sensual and experiential one. His works were designed on the base of their locality that each of them located. For the study, I selected a work of him, which was the Mimesis Art Museum at Paju in South Korea, and reviewed existing literatures to understand how he controlled the light and created the architectural spaces and forms in relation with the light, and I measured the illumination levels of the inside areas of the Mimesis Art Museum, and then, I surveyed the visitors’ responses on the lighting conditions of the Mimesis Art Museum. The results of the measurements showed that the illumination levels of the Mimesis Art museum on the first floor were effectively controlled to display the art works. The illumination levels on the third floor, however, were much higher than recommended illumination values for museum because of less controlled natural light. Therefore, more considerations to control the natural light are needed to secure stable environment in the exhibition spaces. Meanwhile, the answers of questionnaires concerning the quality of lighting conditions in the Mimesis Art Museum showed that the natural light was so effective to light the museum although the natural light illuminated some areas of the museum with high illumination levels.

Ramon Illan Bacca
