Evaluación de insecticidas sintéticos sobre adultos de Metamasius spinolae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) procedentes de Tlalnepantla, Morelos

Abstract: the cactus weevil, metamasius spinolae (gyllenhal), is one of the most important pests in prickly pear (opuntia ficus-indica (l.) miller) in mexico and especially in tlalnepantla, morelos, the second most important region in the production of this crop, with about 2 500 ha. both adults and larvae cause damage to this crop; larvae make galleries in mature pads and adults damage young pads of the cactus. although there are no authorized pesticides for its control in mexico, this fact does not stop farmers from using synthetic insecticides without knowing their effectiveness. for this reason, this study evaluated the effectiveness of eight pesticides in two chemical groups, organophosphates and pyrethroids, on adults of this insect. the laboratory and field tests conducted in 2007 showed that malathion caused a mortality similar to other more toxic products in the same group (methyl parathion and methidathion). on the other hand, only a pyrethroid insecticide (permethrin) provided a mortality rate close to 86%, in comparison to the remaining three (cypermethrin, deltamethrin and fenvalerate) which caused a mortality of under 20% mortality. there was a differential response of the sex of the insect to insecticides, in which females were less susceptible than males to some products, such as diazinon, permethrin and cypermethrin. this is the first formal report of the evaluation of synthetic insecticides in this insect and we discuss some issues related to management.

Abstract: Se observó da o de un insecto en tallos y botones florales de tres especies y una subespecie de Hylocereus en Morelos, México durante 2006 y 2007. El objetivo de este trabajo fue la identificación específica de la plaga y la descripción del da o. Mensualmente se recolectaron pupas y adultos en campo en ambos a os, y se identificó a Cactophagus spinolae (Gyllenhal). Las larvas se alimentaron de tallos maduros (incidencia del 50%) y afectan el cilindro vascular, lo que puede matar a la planta. Los adultos se alimentaron de tallos inmaduros (5% de incidencia) y de brácteas y sépalos de botones florales (1% de incidencia).

Abstract: The application of enzymatic extracts and conidia of Beauveria bassiana in Metamasius spinolae and Cyclocephala lunulata was evaluated. The variables were mortality and time of death. In M. spinolae, mortality with extracts 29%, conidia 27% and the combination of both 31%, all had a time of death of four days. Although with different symptoms, used enzymatic extracts: contraction and softening of the joints; by conidia: mycelium in the joints; in the combination of conidia and enzymatic extracts: abundant aerial mycelium. In C. lunulata, 100% mortality in all treatments; Time of death: enzymatic extracts and extracts with conidia 1.2 days; conidia 2.8 days. Symptoms were different, enzymatic extracts: melanization and internal tissue lysis; enzymatic extract and conidia: mycelium emerged and melanization; conidia: mycelium emerged. Enzymatic extracts showed insecticidal activity in M. spinolae and C. lunulata. These results suggest the potential of enzymatic extracts as biocontrol agents to improve the use of entomopathogenic fungi.

Abstract: Con el objeto de estudiar aspectos biológicos del gorgojo rayado (Metamasius hemipterus L.) se condujo una investigación en el laboratorio de Entomología de la Universidad de Oriente y en plantaciones de palma aceitera (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) en El Zamuro, municipio Maturín, estado Monagas, Venezuela. En condiciones de laboratorio, el estudio se inició con 15 parejas de adultos. colocadas en recipientes (1 pareja/recipiente), alimentándolas con trozos de ca a de azúcar sobre los cuales las hembras también realizaron su oviposición. Diariamente se observó este material para registrar la fecha de oviposición. El material infestado con huevos se mantuvo en observación para determinar la duración del período embrionario. Para la fase de pupa se recolectaron, en campo, 20 larvas próximas a pupar y se trasladaron al laboratorio donde se alimentaron con raquis de la hoja de palma hasta la emergencia de adultos. Los adultos obtenidos se mantuvieron con igual dieta, desde el momento que emergieron hasta su muerte. La duración de la fase larval fue determinada por la diferencia entre el registro del período de huevo+larva obtenido en condiciones de campo y la duración del período embrionario en condiciones de laboratorio. La población de adultos (individuos/2 hojas/palma) se cuantificó en el área de corte del pecíolo de las hojas de palma, removida para tal fin. La fase embrionaria se completó en 4,1± 0,6 días, el estado de pupa 15,3 ± 1,1 días y 73,4 ± 1,7 días para la duración del adulto y en campo la duración de la fase larval fue de 42,5± 0,7 días. El ciclo de vida promedio fue de 135,4 días. Abstract: Diaugia angusta Perty, 1833 is a Neotropical species of Tachinidae (Diptera) reported here as a parasitoid of Metamasius ensirostris (Germar, 1824) and M. hemipterus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae) in Brazil. Several species of Dryophthoridae and Curculionidae cause damage to bromeliad and palm species, and most are regarded as pests. In the present study, the male and female of D. angusta are morphologically characterized and illustrated to provide a means for the identification of this parasitoid. Data obtained from preliminary field research show that natural parasitism of Metamasius pupae by D. angusta varies by year but can reach nearly 30%. A network of parasitoid-host interactions among tachinid parasitoids and coleopteran hosts reported as bromeliad and palm pests (Dryophthoridae and Curculionidae) in the Americas indicates that the species of the tribe Dexiini sensu lato (including D. angusta) might be promising as biological control agents of these pests.

Abstract: RESUMEN Se presenta una sinopsis de los escarabajos de la subfamilia Dryophthorinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) asociados a cultivos de plátano y banano en Colombia. Adicionalmente se ofrecen claves ilustradas para las especies del país. Abstract: Se estudiaron las especies de picudos o gorgojos (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) asociadas con agaves (Asparagaceae: Agavoideae) en México. Se registraron 5 especies asociadas con especies de Agave, Furcraea, Hesperoyucca, Polianthes y Yucca; de éstas, 4 pertenecen a la subfamilia Dryophthorinae (Scyphophorus acupunctatus, S. yuccae, Rhinostomus frontalis y Cactophagus spinolae) y 1 a la Baridinae (Peltophorus polymitus). Se presentan diagnosis, ilustraciones y una clave para la identificación de las 5 especies de curculiónidos asociados con agaves. Se establecen las siguientes sinonimias: Sphenophorus validus LeConte, 1858 = Cactophagus spinolae (Gyllenhal, 1838); y Zygops polymitus seminiveus LeConte, 1884, Z. p. leopardinus Desbrochers, 1891 y Z. p. suffusus Casey, 1892 = Peltophorus polymitus Boheman, 1845. Weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) associated with agaves (Asparagaceae: Agavoideae) from Mexico are analyzed. Five species were recorded associated with species of Agave, Furcraea, Hesperoyucca, Polianthes, and Yucca. Four of these species belong to the subfamily Dryophthorinae (Scyphophorus acupunctatus, S. yuccae, Rhinostomus frontalis, and Cactophagus spinolae) and 1 belongs to the subfamily Baridinae (Peltophorus polymitus). Diagnoses, illustrations and a key are presented for identifying the 5 species of weevils found on agaves. The following synonymies are established: Sphenophorus validus LeConte, 1858 = Cactophagus spinolae (Gyllenhal, 1838); and Zygops polymitus seminiveus LeConte, 1884, Z. p. leopardinus Desbrochers, 1891, and Z. p. suffusus Casey, 1892 = Peltophorus polymitus Boheman, 1845.

Abstract: The incidence of pests in coconut trees is a factor that limits its cultivation, accounting for a significant depletion of the culture as well as for reducing productivity, considering that, in Brazil, coconut is mostly cultivated by small farmers who do not have access to technology and financial resources, thus increasing the precariousness of disease control. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the curculionidae-pests in coconut cultures in the region of Sinop – Mato Grosso, and present possible control methods. The experiment was conducted at three coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) farms in Sinop, Mato Grosso, Brazil, from September 2009 to April 2010. Bucket and PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) bottle traps were used to collect the samples. The traps were spread among the coconut trees, and the results indicated the first record of Metamasius cinnamominus Perty 1830, Metamasius hemipterus hemipterus Linnaeus, 1765 and Rhynchophorus palmarum Linnaeus, 1758 in the State of Mato Grosso, and of Rhinostomus barbirostris Fabricius, 1775, in the Sinop region, as well as Homalinotus coriaceus Gyllenhal, 1836 and Amerrhinus ynca Sahlberg, 1823. Distribution and control data are also presented. A incidência de pragas nos coqueirais constitui um fator limitante à explora o, respondendo de maneira significativa pelo depauperamento geral da cultura e também pela redu o da produtividade, visto que grande parte do coqueiral brasileiro é cultivado por pequenos produtores sem acesso à tecnologia e a recursos financeiros, o que aumenta ainda mais a precariedade no manejo dessas enfermidades. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar os curculionideos-praga na cultura do coco na regi o de Sinop, MT a apresentar possíveis métodos de controle. O experimento foi conduzido em três propriedades com cultivo de coco (Cocos nucifera L.) em Sinop, Mato Grosso, Brasil, no período de setembro de 2009 a abril de 2010. Para a coleta foram utilizadas armadilhas Tipo Balde e Tipo Pet espalhadas dentro dos coqueirais e os resultados indicaram o primeiro registro da ocorrência de Metamasius cinnamominus Perty 1830, Metamasius hemipterus hemipterus Linnaeus, 1765 e Rhynchophorus palmarum Linnaeus 1758 no estado de Mato Grosso e de Rhinostomus barbirostris Fabricius 1775, na regi o de Sinop, além de Homalinotus coriaceus Gyllenhal, 1836 e Amerrhinus ynca Sahlberg, 1823.
