Abstract: With the rise of American minimalism,the radically reductive art of the mid-1960's that took to a logical conclusion of the Greenbergian doctrine that painting tended inexorably to approach the condition of absolute flatness,and sculpture that of volumetric clarity,one saw formalism at its most ruthless absolute,and,artistically,one saw a complete dead end.Thus my criticism is a double critique of Greenberg's theory of modernist painting and of Minimalism's Greenbergian advocacy of literalism.

Abstract: The core argument of this article is that linguistic and narrative experimentation that dominates the modernist Irish literature is no longer just an attempt at linguistic subversion but an endeavour of national innovation. The dynamics of modernist literature allows Irish writers to transform colonial oppression into a positive literary tradition. The colonised status of modern Irish writers offered a form of voluntary exile that is apparent in the autonomy of art and the playful language and text that no longer signal a univocal signification but a meaningful play. This sense of detachment probably explains why so many Irish writers from Swift through Wilde to Beckett and O’Brien were so fond of word play and linguistic innovation. The playful language that re-arranges letters and words is a political act. Instead of supporting violence, Irish writers ridicule standard images they saw as limiting. Colloquy transforms the novel into a movement through its onomatopoeic narratives, voices and discourses. Kaleidoscopic narratives undermine conventional modes of discourse by concentrating on linguistic instability and in particular on the dialogic nature of language. It eschews meaning in favour of a dynamic form in which meanings are constructed. The effect of continual interplay is a dynamic and unbounded experience.

Abstract: We report direct and absolute temperature measurements in a diode-end-pumped Yb:YAG crystal, using a calibrated infrared camera, with a 60-$\mu$m spatial resolution. The heat transfer coefficient has been measured, for the first time to our knowledge, with four different types of thermal contact (H = 0.25, 0.28, 0.9 and 2.0 for bare contact, graphite layer, indium foil and heat sink grease respectively). The dynamics of thermal effects is also presented.

Postmodernism: A Reaction to the Terrorism of the Modernist Philosophical Thought

Abstract: This paper is the concluding part of a series of two papers exploring and explaining the concept of postmodernism. The approach adopted for examining the postmodern phenomenon was to picture it as a collage incorporating three distinct but interrelated concepts/themes: one, postmodernism as an epoch; two, postmodernism as a signifier of the problematical features or the limits of modernity; and three, postmodernism as a reaction to the terrorism of the modernist philosophical thought. The first two of these were discussed in the paper published in the pervious issue of the Market Forces. This paper involves an examination of the third theme: postmodernism as a reaction to the terrorism of the modernist philosophical thought which has been described as positivistic, technocentric, and rationalistic, and the belief in linear progress, absolute truths, the rational planning of ideal social orders, and the standardization of knowledge and production. The approach adopted for this paper involves the use of the term ‘post’ as a counter concept and a broad-gauged cultural and intellectual movement that is re-conceptualizing the way we experience and understand the world around us. It involves a re-examination of eight areas of our knowledge base that form the basis of our conceptual foundations. These are: the concept of truth; the concept of theory; the concept of representation; the concept and the relationship between the author, the text, and the reader; the concept of subject; the problematic of disciplinary research; the concept of space; and the concept of history. The discussion involves an examination of the normally accepted definitions of these concepts and the counter-concepts or the alternative definitions offered within the realm of postmodern philosophical thought. Investigation into the counter-concepts is aimed as understanding how postmodernism represents a departure in our way of thinking regarding the best strategy for confronting the problems of the new epoch - the postmodern epoch.

Abstract: Social reality appears as a mosaic in which each element has its genesis and a different pattern, which are correlated, to become in this way a whole with specific dynamics. As a functional component of any society, law is influenced by social changes and seeks to regulate them through legal rules. Given that contemporary society is increasingly driven more by information technology, computing, formalization, globalization, it is often questioned whether the law will face these new challenges and how, based on modernist tradition in lawmaking activity or tilting the balance toward postmodernism? In this respect, the article is trying to find an answer to this question, analyzing the modernist and postmodernist theories regarding the foundation of the regulation solution. In the end, pleads for the passing from the simple decision in the regulation process to the legal decision based on complexity.

Abstract: This study tries to analyze Saul Bellow’s Seize the Day from a modernist point of view. Bellow applies some narrative techniques which closely match those of the modernist diegetic process. The narrative has a potentially representative content which opens one’s horizons toward new sources of meaning and conceptual interpretation. The focal point, in this study, is to examine the epistemological level, individualism, stream of consciousness, pessimism and irony to see how tangibly these terms agree with the very context of the above-mentioned novel and to find out whether the purely abstract terms extracted from modernist theory can be concretized in a practical form. Furthermore, this study aims at scrutinizing in detail the frequency and the possibility of the modernist narrative elements in the very fabric and texture of fictional narrative in general.

Abstract: Studies on Catalan Modernism got underway shortly before the Spanish Civil War but did not become widespread untilabout 1950, when the books Modernismo y modernistas by J.-F. Ràfols and El arte modernista catalán by A. Cirici Pellicerwere published. Substantial biographies of Gaudí appeared from the start but some considerable time was to pass beforein-depth studies of most of the key figures of Catalan Modernist Art were undertaken. In 1969 a major official exhibition was devoted to Modernism and in the 1970s there was an outburst of research into Modernism in fields including art and literature. In the 1980s major exhibitions on Modernism began to the staged in countries such as England, Japan and Sweden and were boosted by the presence of the names of Gaudí himself or the young Picasso, both of whom arose fromthe core of Modernism. Monographs with catalogues raisonnés have appeared on various Modernist painters: Anglada-Camarasa (1981), Santiago Rusi ol (1995) and Ramon Casas (1999), while new overall exhibitions have been dedicated to Catalan Modernism (1990) and Valencian Modernism (1997). Between 2002 and 2004, knowledge about Catalan Modernism and its background was condensed into five volumes comprising contributions from some eighty specialists.
Neuro-epistemology: a post-modernist analysis of the neuro-sciences: research

Abstract: This paper examines the theoretical framework in which we construct our terms of reference when examining patients from an integrated Meyerian biopsychosocial perspective. We coin the term i Dneuro-epistemologylo, defining the frame for scientific inquiry into the nature and status of knowledge in neuro-sciences, drawing on a post-modernist, social constructionist framework. The framework is then applied in a review of defining what can be co-created(tm) with patients, given the inter-subjective nature of knowledge, the self-reflexive relationship between meanings and behaviour in mental illness and the relationship between knowledge and power. The role of mental frameworks, or presuppositions, in guiding one(tm)s choice of research methodology, protocol, experimental tools and hypotheses is explored. The analysis points to the closed nature of the scientific domain in mental health, and the exploration of consciousness and emotions. These principles are applied to the field of neuro-science, including the assumptive framework upon which the dominant discourse in this field is based, which ultimately serves to maintain the hegemony of that status quo. Case examples are used to demonstrate how the application of an integrated approach to mental health draws on an informed, co-created neuro- epistemology. Hierdie artikel ondersoek die teoretiese raamwerk waarin ons, ons terme van verwysing konstrueer met verwysing na die ondersoeking van pasi nte vanuit 'n ge ntegreerde Meyeriaanse biopsigososiale perspektief. Ons ontwikkel die term ieneuro-epistemologiel" wat die raamwerk vir wetenskaplike studies na die aard en status van neurowetenskappe omvat en op 'n post-moderne, sosiaal-konstruktiewe raamwerk gebaseer is. Die raamwerk word dan in 'n oorsig toegepas, om te definieer wat ko-konstruksie met pasi nte kan behels, gegewe die intersubjektiewe aard van kennis, die self-refleksiewe verhouding tussen betekenisse en gedrag in geestesversteuring en die verhouding tussen kennis en mag. Die rol van kognitiewe raamwerke, of vooronderstellings, in die keuse van navorsingsmetodologie, protokol, eksperimentele toerusting en hipoteses word ondersoek. Die ontleding dui op die geslote aard van die wetenskaplike domein in geestesgesondheid en die ondersoeking van bewussyn en emosies. O autor, entretanto, n o parece levar em considera o essa posi o que lhe é conferida. O objetivo deste artigo é discutir a quest o e apresentar características da poesia banderiana que o colocam na linha de frente do movimento modernista brasileiro. Manuel Bandeira has been considered by critics the introducer of free verse in Brazilian poetry as well as the forerunner of our modern lyrics. Nevertheless, the author seems not to consider this position given to him. This artricle aims to discuss this issue and show the characteristics of Banderian poetry that put him at the forefront of the Brazilian modernist movement.
