Psyche , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/940315
Abstract: Several specimens of the myrmecophilous beetle Paussus favieri were reared in ant nests of Pheidole pallidula. Their interactions were recorded and all behaviors observed are described. Duration and frequency of five behaviors of P. favieri were analyzed with ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests; these comprised rewarding, antennal shaking, antennation, escape, and “no contact”. Significant differences both in duration and in frequency among behaviors were detected. The main result is that the rewarding behavior, during which the beetle provides attractive substances to the host, is performed significantly more frequently than all others. This result strongly supports the hypothesis that the chemicals provided by the beetles and licked by the ants are of great importance for the acceptance and the full integration of P. favieri in the ant society. This result also suggests that, contrary to previous findings and interpretations, the myrmecophilous strategy of P. favieri is very similar to the symphilous strategy described for P. turcicus. The occasional interactions of some beetle specimens with the P. pallidula queen were recorded, illustrated, and discussed, indicating the possibility of a more complex strategy of P. favieri involving a chemical mimicry with the queen. In addition, the courtship performed by the beetle is described for the first time, together with a peculiar “cleaning” behavior, which we hypothesize functions to spread antennal chemicals over the body surfaces.

英文摘要:The typology, number, and distribution pattern of the antennal sensilla of Carabus casaleianus were studied using scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that there was no significant difference of the length of each segment and the total length of the antennal between male and female C. casaleianus. The antennal had seven types of sensilla, including three sensilla chaetica, three sensilla trichodea, two sensilla basiconica, one sensilla coeloconica, one sensilla cavity, one sensilla campaniformia and one B?hm bristles. These results suggested that there was no remarkable difference in the types and distribution of antennal sensilla in both genders, even though the numbers were significantly different. This work provided basic data for future electrophysiological and behavioural experiments. 33(4): 578-583. Des Balkans About the Balkans  [cached]
Predrag Matvejevi?
Cahiers Balkaniques , 2012,
The Balkans are full of geographical and political contradictions, which becomes obvious by simply noticing the fact that their name has changed more than once during the course of history : starting as Illyrian peninsula, it was then transformed into Greek, then Byzantine peninsula while recently it is known as “European Turkey”. Originally, the Balkans is a name that came from the Turks. This almost island has natural frontiers which are easy to cross. The boundaries proposed by geographers and historians are relative and often arbitrary, thus contested. Defining the Balkan frontier
Balkans as the cultural subcontinent of Europe

Abstract: New world order and rearrangement of Europe transform the position of Balkan region -instead as the "crossroad" between East and West, it is more often included into the area of Western influence. In European relations developed "core" is gradually spreading toward "periphery" removing the traditional Balkan culture. The europeisation of Balkans and spreading of Western European civilization's circle gives the arguments that the term Balkans should be replaced with the term Southeastern Europe. The europeisation or balkanization is not geopolitical but civilization choice in front of all Balkan nations.
Ground beetles of the Ukraine (Coleoptera, Carabidae)  [cached]
Alexander Putchkov
ZooKeys , 2011, DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.100.1545
Abstract: A review of the ground beetles of the Ukrainian fauna is given. Almost 750 species from 117 genera of Carabidae are known to occur in the Ukraine. Approximately 450 species of ground beetles are registered in the Carpathian region. No less than 300 species of ground beetles are found in the forest zone. Approximately 400 species of Carabidae present in the forest-steppe zone are relatively similar in species composition to those in the forest territories. Some 450 species of Carabidae are inhabitants of the steppe zone. Representatives of many other regions of heterogeneous biotopes such as forest, semi desert, intrazonal, etc. can be found in the steppe areas. The fauna of Carabidae (ca. 100 species) of the lowlands of southern Ukraine (sandy biotopes), situated mostly in the Kherson region, is very peculiar. The fauna of the Crimean mountains contains about 300 species. Conservation measures for the Carabidae are discussed.

Abstract: The paper analyses writings of Slavenka Drakuli and certain number of other feminist writers from ex-Yugoslavia aiming to answer to the following questions: first, how much and in what way the discourses on ex-Yugoslavia Balkans, (post)socialism, nationalism and war have been produced by local feminists and/or imported from the West; second, have these discourses been overlapping with local feminist discourses about masculinity and femininity and how.
The Balkans' new political dynamic  [PDF]
Gordon Bardos N.
Balcanica , 2006, DOI: 10.2298/balc0637283g
Abstract: The Balkans is currently going through its most profound period of change since Slobodan Milo evi 's overthrow in October 2000. Montenegro has declared its independence from the state union of Serbia and Montenegro; the Kosovo future status talks are in their final stages and by all indications will suggest some form of independence for the Serbian province; new governments are in place in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia; while the results of Serbia’s January 2007 elections suggest that Serbian politics will be unstable for the foreseeable future. All of this is occurring at a time when two of the pillars promoting stability in the Balkans - a substantial U.S. military presence and the foreseeable prospect of EU accession for the countries of the region - are being withdrawn. Meanwhile, anew variable is being introduced into the strategic equation in The region - the return of Russia as a serious player. As a result of all of these new developments without a more serious commitment to the region from both Washington and Brussels over the next few years, there is a serious likelihood that the democratic and economic transitions in the region will suffer serious setbacks or delays.
Evaluating Alpha and Beta Taxonomy in Ant-Nest Beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Paussini)  [PDF]

Psyche , 2013, DOI: 10.1155/2013/736939
Abstract: We evaluated completeness, accuracy, and historical trend of the taxonomic knowledge on the myrmecophilous ground beetle tribe Paussini (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Paussinae). Accumulation curves for valid names and synonyms of species, subgenera, and genera were modelled using logistic functions. Analyses of trends in synonymies suggest that few currently accepted taxa will be recognized to be synonymous in the future. This may indicate that Paussini are a taxonomically relatively stable tribe of carabid beetles. However, this result might also be due to the lack of recent taxonomic work in some biogeographical regions. 1. Introduction Arthropods are the most diversified animal group [1, 2]. Although it is widely acknowledged that only a small fraction of the extant arthropod species has been described, the magnitude of the so-called Linnean shortfall (i.e., the discrepancy between the number of described species and the number of living species) is a matter of discussion [2]. Also for relatively well-investigated arthropod groups, there is few information about the quality of the taxonomic knowledge [3, 4]. The most basic question is to establish how complete and accurate the taxonomic status of a given group is. With the word completeness we refer here to the problem whether the species list of a given group can be considered fairly complete or if there are still many species to describe. A completely known group is one for which there is no longer a need of an alpha taxonomic work (the discovering and naming of new species [5]). With accuracy we refer to taxonomic stability. An accurately known group is one for which there is no more need of a beta taxonomic work (the study of the relationships between the already described taxa, through systematic revisional work of higher taxa [5]). Because it is not rare that species are redundantly described under different names (i.e., synonyms), a group is known with accuracy when no relevant taxonomic change is expected. Although the two aspects tend to be interrelated, they are not necessarily redundant, because revisional works are much rarer than descriptions of new taxa. In this paper, we evaluated the completeness and accuracy of the taxonomic knowledge about a group of myrmecophilous beetles, the tribe Paussini (“ant-nest beetles”) of the family Carabidae (Coleoptera, Adephaga, Paussinae), at a global level. All Paussini are highly specialized social parasites, depending on ants (mainly associated with Myrmicinae and Formicinae) during any stage of their development [6–9]. Adults prey on ants and their

Status and geographical expansion of the Mediterranean Gecko, Hemidactylus turcicus, in Louisiana: Implications for the Southeastern United States

Herpetological Conservation and Biology , 2006,
Abstract: .—We used literature records, unpublished museum records, and unvouchered reports to evaluate the status of theMediterranean gecko (Hemidactylus turcicus) in Louisiana since its last comprehensive treatment in 1989. During the last 17years, the known geographic range of this species has expanded from four to 30 parishes following a pattern that iscommensurate with extensive human-mediated dispersal. Its strong association with, and use patterns of, buildings in Louisianaare similar to those of the species elsewhere. Potentially limiting competitors and predators have not been identified in urbansettings. Potential for competition with hylid treefrogs in ruderal settings remains unresolved, and in many urban settings thepotential for syntopy is low. Louisiana and the southeastern United States in general are amenable to colonization by H. turcicuswith the northern edge of its geographic range being dictated by climate. However, the future status of this species within thesoutheastern United States will be strongly influenced by the thermal tolerances of a suite of recent and competitively superiorgecko species that displace this species in Texas and Florida.
