THE REFERENCE EVAPOTRANSPIRATION AND THE CLIMATIC WATER DEFICIT IN THE WESTERN PLAIN OF ROMANIA, NORTH OF THE MURE RIVER  [PDF]

Abstract: The Reference Evapotranspiration and the Climatic Water Deficit in the Western Plain of Romania, North of the Mure River. In the present paper, reference evapotranspiration (ET0) was calculated by the method proposed by C.W. Thornthwaite. The climatic water deficit, as the difference between atmospheric precipitation and ET0, has also been calculated and analyzed. In this respect, monthly and annual air temperature and precipitation data from 10 weather stations were used. The analysis period was 1961-2002. The result was that the annual average reference evapotranspiration varies, throughout the Western Plain of Romania, North of the Mure River territory, between 665 and 700 mm. It decreases from south to north and also from west to east, depending on the territorial distribution of the air temperature. The plain territory reveals an annual climatic water deficit between 63 mm in the north of the plain and 171 mm in its south. Therefore, the predominantly agricultural territory of the plain needs a water surplus from irrigation. Only in the east of the plain, at Holod, there is a surplus of moisture.

Abstract: Field experiments were conducted to study the effects of water deficits on potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) evapotranspiration, tuber yield and water-use efficiency. The experiments were carried out under cool season semiarid climatic conditions in Erzurum province located in the east of Turkey in the spring seasons of 2003 and 2004. The experiment included six water deficits: 0% (well-irrigation), 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% (non-irrigation). Results indicate that deficit irrigation influenced evapotranspiration, tuber yield and water-use efficiency. Potato evapotranspiration decreased as water deficit increased. Seasonal evapotranspiration was 445.2 mm in well-irrigated treatment and 195.2 mm non-irrigated treatment. Potato yield and water-use efficiency were also found decrease as water deficit increased. Potato yield of well-irrigated treatment was 26.43 t ha-1 while 8.28 t ha-1 in non-irrigated treatment. A linear relationship was found between evapotranspiration and tuber yield. Water use efficiency was 59.56 kg/ha/mm for well-irrigated treatment and 42.13 kg/ha/mm for non-irrigated treatment. The seasonal yield response factor (ky) for potato was also found as 1.12.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to apply the isareg software model to the irrigation management of watermelon in the lower acaraú irrigated perimeter (laip). to this end, the soil water-balance was analysed, developing an irrigation schedule which aimed for maximum crop yield for the soil and climatic conditions of the laip for a specific planting date and comparing it to the irrigation scheme currently adopted by irrigators. with an aim to the practical application of isareg, the model was supplied monthly with climatic variables, precipitation and soil data, and information on the crop. finally, an irrigation option available in isareg was selected, and a simulation of the soil water-balance was carried out. questionnaires were used in order to get information about the irrigation scheme employed at the laip. the research showed that the producers of watermelon at the laip are not properly managing water resources. during the crop cycle, irrigators are applying an excess of about 215.2 mm of water at some periods, and a deficit of 24.2 mm to the crops in others.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the coefficient of irrigameter device (KI) and to assess its performance in the irrigation of sunflower. The experiment was conducted in the Jaíba Irrigated Perimeter, Jaíba, MG, located at 15° 36' S and 43° 42' W, with an altitude of 460 m. For the evaluation of the performance of the irrigameter, the water level in the evaporimeter was kept at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 cm high, and the evapotranspiration estimated by the irrigameter was compared to the reference evapotranspiration, calculated by the standard method Penman-Monteith FAO 56 (Allen et al., 1998). It was concluded that the values of KI obtained were 0.42, 0.69, 0.85, 1.07, 1.34 and 1.61 for the water levels in the evaporimeter corresponding to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 cm, respectively. There was no significant difference between the yield of sunflower crop irrigated during day or night time; higher average values then reported by the literature were found. The irrigameter device was found to be satisfactory for irrigation control. To estimate the reference evapotranspiration in similar regions with similar climatic conditions, it is recommended to use the unit with evaporimeter adjusted to the level 3.7 cm.

Abstract: An approach to modelling random sets with locally finite perimeter as random elements in the corresponding subspace of $L^1$ functions is suggested. A Crofton formula for flat sections of the perimeter is shown. Finally, random processes of particles with finite perimeter are introduced and it is shown that their union sets are random sets with locally finite perimeter.

Abstract: In terms of improved crop production, knowledge and information of the crops and crop varieties grown in a given area is a better measure of climate, as applied to crop production in that region, than are complete climatic records. Water is the main element of living plant tissues. Water facilitates the movement of nutrients from the soil to the plant roots and upward throughout the plant tissues. It also provides hydrogen as an element of organic materials formed during photosynthesis. The transpiration of water also helps to cool plants during harsh temperature conditions. The effectiveness of a given rainfall for crop production highly depends on the time of the year that it falls along with its intensity. In moisture deficit areas, the deficiency could be overcome by supplementary irrigation and moisture conserving agronomic practices. Apart from this, the use of improved varieties like early maturing crops will also hold a paramount importance to combat such problems. In arid and semi-arid zones, the conservation and efficient utilization of the available scanty rainfall plays a significant role in the whole production system since it can relegate all other factors, including soil fertility, to minor positions. Therefore, knowledge on growing period has a central role in improving crop production. Thus, this paper is aimed at characterizing climatic data for predicting the growing period in the case of Maichew, Northern Ethiopia.
