An Empirical Study on the Curriculum Construction of Business English for International Trade Based on the Case of GDUFS  [cached]

Abstract: Business English education concern is of great significance. Business English for International Trade in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) is widely acclaimed, and it is also a popular major. GDUFS has adopted the slogan “Learn from East and West, moral integrity and direct behavior”. It is a famous cradle of learning, where complex and capable persons are educated. Through review and reflection into the findings of the practice of business English in GDUFS and other instructions, this paper is aimed at analyzing the situation of the present curriculum, identifying existing problems such as the misbalance between the English courses and Business courses based on the theory of Needs Analysis, and then make some suggestions to increase the percentage of the Business courses and Business practices. In this way, this paper can serve as a reference for the curriculum construction of Business English for International trade in GDUFS.
An Evaluation of the English Immersion Approach in the Teaching of Finance in China  [cached]

Abstract: The English immersion teaching approach adopted by SEIB of GDUFS in China was developed on the basis of the immersion theory which was originally developed in North America. Its purpose is to create a learning environment in which the students acquire knowledge in business with English as the main carrier. The adoption of this approach aims to cultivate students with qualifications in both English language proficiency and business knowledge and skills. EDIF is one of the departments within SEIB that has implemented this approach since its establishment in 2001. The paper analyzes the implementation of English immersion teaching approach in the teaching of finance in EDIF from the perspectives of curriculum design, teacher training and recruitment, textbook selection and compilation and classroom teaching. Finally by comparing the results of language proficiency tests of EDIF students and those of the English majors of other colleges in China and by analyzing the employment situation of EDIF graduates, this paper concludes that students of EDIF outperform the other college students in both English language proficiency and employment competitive advantage. This indicates that English immersion teaching approach adopted by EDIF is effective and successful in the cultivation of students in both English proficiency and business knowledge.

Abstract: Recent literature has suggested that the relationship between globalisation and the English language implicates employability in the job market. Although the effects are uneven in different occupational groups and in different countries, such relationship is growing in significance to policy makers. This paper has explored the hitherto unstudied relationship between English language proficiency and employment and the success of Bangladeshi graduates in Australia to establish how English language skills influence the employment mechanism in the Australian job market for graduates from a non-English speaking South East Asian country. The study was carried out following an interpretive approach as its overall aim was to understand the role of English language skills of university graduates in determining their employment opportunities and career prospects in Australia. It was found that in various ways one’s English language skills influence prospects of employment, especially in contributing to the possibility of “secure” and “better” jobs. The research findings may inform educational policy planners, teacher educators, employers and career advisers to optimise English language learning programs that support increased employability through English.
Graduates Employment: Valuable of Curtin University of Technology Sarawak Graduates

Abstract: The main objective of this research is to study the valuable of Curtin University of Technology Sarawak’s graduates in 2006, as well as to study graduates’ perception and recommendation on programs offered. Questionnaires were distributed to School of Business and School of Engineering’s graduates before the Graduation Ceremony held on 11th May 2006 at the Imperial Hall, Mega Hotel. The study found that the employment rate is 64.9% in 2006. Unemployment rate dropped from 36% in 2004 to 25.3% in 2005 and then increased to 35.1% in 2006, however, from this unemployment group, it is found that 58.5% was ‘Still seeking for work’ scenario, while 32.3% took a break, 6.2% further studies, 1.5% choose not to work and 1.5% find difficult in getting a suitable job. The study also shows that around 69.17% of the Curtin’s graduate salary ranges are between RM1000 – RM1500 and RM1500 – RM1800. Related to graduates’ perception on the university, majority of students are very satisfied with the program offered by the school and even like to recommend their family members to study in this institution. However, number of recommendations was provided by the graduates to improve the quality of the programs. The program to be more relevant to the needs of the industry, especially industry training and practical work experiences, constant visitation to industry workplaces for better learning, applications towards theoretical components and increased contemporary knowledge currently practiced at the workplace to be brought into the classroom.

Abstract: A statistical analysis of employment flow of landscape architecture graduates was conducted on the employment data of graduates major in landscape architecture in 2008 to 2011. The employment flow of graduates was to be admitted to graduate students, industrial direction and regional distribution, etc. Then, the features of talent flow and factors affecting the status quo were discussed, so as to offer theoretical foundation for scientific formation of relevant employment policies and provide guidance for graduates to pursue a job and select an employment.
