The Confessions of Montaigne  [PDF]
John Jeffries Martin
Religions , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/rel3040950
Abstract: Montaigne rarely repented and he viewed confession—both juridical and ecclesiastical—with skepticism. Confession, Montaigne believed, forced a mode of self-representation onto the speaker that was inevitably distorting. Repentance, moreover, made claims about self-transformation that Montaigne found improbable. This article traces these themes in the context of Montaigne’s Essays, with particular attention to “On Some Verses of Virgil” and argues that, for Montaigne, a primary concern was finding a means of describing a self that he refused to reduce, as had Augustine and many other writers before and after him, to the homo interior.
Montaigne's revival of pyrrhonism
Bogdanovski Ma?an
Theoria, Beograd , 2008, DOI: 10.2298/theo0804059b
Abstract: The Pyrrhonian arguments used by Michel de Montaigne in his essay An Apology for Raymond Sebond are presented in detail in this paper. The paper explores the reasons that have induced Montaigne to utilize them in an apparently paradoxical context of Catholic apologetics. As a consequence of the influence this essay had exerted in the Early Modern philosophy, a considerable interest has been developed for the Ancient Skepticism, notwithstanding the fact that the Skeptical arguments were not always correctly interpreted in Montaigne's work.
Flaubert lecteur de Montaigne  [cached]
Philippe Jousset
Flaubert : Revue Critique et Génétique , 2009,
Abstract: Flaubert a fréquenté assid ment Montaigne, qui a contribué puissamment à sa formation. Flaubert assiduously read Montaigne, who greatly contributed to his development. There are numerous parallels between the two writers, but beyond being a think tank, the former represented a source that the latter exploited according to his obsessions. Such a use does not preclude misunderstandings and projections, so that Montaigne was adopted by Flaubert to reconstitute the myth of a kind of ingenuousness. Furthermore, Montaigne proves to be a prose model, particularly in the freer style of his Correspondence.
O Brasil de Montaigne
Lestringant, Frank;
Revista de Antropologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-77012006000200001
Abstract: this article proposes a new perspective on montaigne's celebrated essays on america and its peoples, initially in the light of the rethorical form of declamation adopted in them. the comparison of the "american" essays reveals, moreover, the privileged place of brazil and its cannibals in montaigne's reflection on the new world, and the compositon of an image of all of its peoples that is simultaneously conformed to the edenic model of the tupinambá and elevated to the dignity of antiquity's great men - "tupinambized" and "romanized".

Joan Lluis Llinas Begon

This article is divided into three parts. Firstly, there is a discussion on Montaigne's critique of a given philosophy, and a defense of the consideration of Montaigne as a philosopher. Secondly, a situation of Montaigne regarding modern philosophy is attempted. Thirdly, beyond his modernity, his usefulness for reflecting about some contemporary problems, such as that of multiculturalism, that of personal identity and that of philosophical activity, is discussed.
Raison d'état em Montaigne
Concei??o, Gilmar Henrique da;
Kriterion: Revista de Filosofia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-512X2012000200011
Abstract: in "of the useful and of the honest" montaigne questions if, in the defense of the state, there shoud be any ethical limits to the action of the prince. must the prince be guided by the useful or the honest? he argues that the "devoir publique" is the limit subjects have to respect in their dedication to the prince, preserving their freedom of judgment. in public affairs, going beyond the limits of conscience is risking the trust of others in the truth of one's words. there is no reason higher than consciousness. while, according to machiavelli, the concept of utility is fundamental, montaigne distingishes the useful from the honest. even if the public utility (hence a "more general reason") may impose dishonesty, morality should prevail in the public space. within the public space honesty is essential to institute the political society. however, to be truthful and to care about the "paix publique" are definitely different. montaigne assumes the incompatibility between morality and politics, but not a prince who ignores the difference between the useful and the honest.
In "Of the useful and of the honest" Montaigne questions if, in the defense of the State, there shoud be any ethical limits to the action of the prince. Must the prince be guided by the useful or the honest? He argues that the "devoir publique" is the limit subjects have to respect in their dedication to the prince, preserving their freedom of judgment.
