Al Ghazali and Hume on causation and miracles  [cached]

Abstract: This paper is an attempt to show the similarities and differences between Al Ghazali and Hume on causation and miracles. Such a comparison is interesting because, long before Hume, the issue of necessary causality had been taken up by the Islamic philosophers Al Ghazal in his book The Incoherence the Philosophers. Although Ghazali's and Hume's views on causation are strikingly parallel to one another in their empirical contention, there are still some differences to be noted. First, both reject the view that the connection between causes and effects is of logical necessity. However, to give an ultimate reason for the theory of causality, unlike Hume, Ghazali makes a reference to God. For Hume, we cannot give an ultimate justification for the theory of causality. Second, while Ghazali aimed to reject the necessary causality in order to account for the occurrence of miracles, Hume, on the contrary, used his theory of causality to reject the claim that miracle can occur. In particular, I argue whether Hume's position allows logical possibility of the occurrence of miracle.

Abstract: This article discusses thoughts of Indonesian practitioner of Islamic mysticism (sufi), Muhammad Zuhri (1939-2011). As with his sufi counterparts, Zuhri’s tasawuf thoughts are aimed at achieving the perfectness with regards to God-human relationship. The author argues that Zuhri’s tassawuf represents continuity and change both in the scholarship of Islamic mystical tradition and as a response to modernity and globalization. [Artikel ini mendiskusikan pemikiran seorang sufi asal Indonesia, Muhammad Zuhri (1939 -2011). Sama seperti kebanyakan pemikiran tasawuf lainnya, pemikiran tasawuf Muhammad Zuhri bertujuan untuk mencapai derajat kesempurnaan dalam berhubungan dengan tuhan. Abstract: The purpose of this study is to trace and analyze the development of maslahah as a dynamic principle of the Islamic jurisprudence of a high methodological significance. To achieve this objective, the researchers undertake an in depth study of jurists discourse on the subject, tracing various stages of its development. Both historical and analytical methods are adopted in this study. The researchers by referring to Muslim jurists discourse on maslahah in the context of the development of legal theory, derive the conclusion that maslahah initially was perceived as a notion of consideration of public welfare. However, its use in this sense was on ad hoc basis and lacked consistency. Its elaborate discussion and hence, recognition as a mature technical term materialised during the 5th century of hijrah. This can be observed clearly from the writings of Muslims jurists of pre-al-Ghazali during al-Ghazali and post-al-Ghazali periods including those of al-Ghazali s writings, himself. However, Al-Shatibi discussion of maslahah within the framework of the theory of the purposes of the law made it of remarkable and profound importance to methodological reconstruction and renewal of Islamic law.
La crítica de Averroes contra el determinismo de al Ghazali y los asharíes

Abstract: the aim of this paper is to discuss the kasb doctrine, or "acquisition doctrine", formulated by one of the most important islamic theological sectors, i.e., the asharites. this doctrine raises a complex question: who is the actual agent of human actions? is it human beings or is it god? the most renowned asharite who tried to solve these questions is al-ghazali. after explaining how problematic the acquisition doctrine is, i will analyze averroes' arguments in the incoherence of the incoherence in order to find out if they really refute the asharite determinism.

Abstract: El objetivo de este trabajo es discutir la "doctrina kasb" o "doctrina de la adquisición", formulada por uno de los sectores teológicos más importantes del Islam, i.e., los asharíes. Dicha doctrina plantea una cuestión compleja: quién es el verdadero agente de las acciones humanas? Es el ser humano o Dios? El asharí más renombrado que intenta resolver estas cuestiones es al-Ghazali. Después de explicar cuán problemática es la doctrina de la adquisición, analizaré los argumentos de Averroes en la Inconsistencia de la inconsistencia, con la finalidad de encontrar si verdaderamente refutan el determinismo asharí. Abstract: This article discusses Islamic mysticism or Sufism, namely Qadiriyah, one of most important Sufism in the muslim world. It was developed by Syaikh ’Abd Qadir al-Jilani, a sufi master with Hambali orientation in his Islamic school (mazhab). Some key principles are discussed, among others is esoterism by which the purity of hearts is given a priority in order to arrive at the stage of knowing or makrifat. Artikel ini mendiskusikan tarekat Qadiriyah yang dibentuk oleh Syaikh ’Abd Qadir al-Jilani. Al-Jilani adalah seorang sufi yang bermazhab Hambali. Tarekat ini menempati posisi yang amat penting dalam sejarah spiritualitas Islam karena menjadi pelopor lahirnya organisasi tarekat di dunia Islam. Ajaran kunci tarekat Qadiriyah akan dijelaskan melalui artikel ini, yaitu ajaran esoterisme Islam yang menekankan kebersihan dan kesucian hati dengan banyak melakukan ibadah agar mencapai makrifat. Abstract: The article discusses the concepts of Islamic education of two famous muslim thinkers, Mahmud Yunus and Muhammad ’Atiah al-Barasyi. Seen from the perspective of educational methods, infrastructure and media offered by these two are suitable for current situation. The Islamic education precisely is framed as tools for Muslim to achieve both success in the world and happiness in the hereafter. Artikel ini mendisksikan konsep pendidikan yang dikembangkan oleh dua orang tokoh terkenal, Mahmud Yunus and Muhammad ’Atiah al-Barasyi. Ditinjau dari perspektif metode dan tujuan pendidikan, keduanya mengembangkan pemikiran yang relevan untuk masa sekarang. Abstract: Pada edisi kali ini, Mukaddimah: Jurnal Studi Islam mengetengahkan beberapa artikel terkait ekonomi Islam, tasawuf, pemikiran, dan pendidikan Islam. Artikel yang ditulis oleh M. Ikhsanudin, berjudul “Gerakan Pembaharuan Hukum Islam di Indonesia: Studi Model Pembaharuan Metode Penemuan Hukum di Muhammadiyah dan NU”, menjelaskan bagaimana adaptasi NU dan Muhammadiyah dalam menyikapi perubahan sosial masyarakat Islam dan implikasinya terhadap corak ijtihad yang mereka terapkan. Tema pendidikan Islam ditulis oleh Rahbini melalui artikel berjudul “Signifikansi Aliran Pemikiran Islam terhadap Pendidikan Islam”. Dalam diskusinya, Rahbini menjelaskan bahwa arus pemikiran teologi Islam berelasi secara positif dengan model pendidikan Islam. Rahbini menjelaskan bahwa model tersebut merupakan implikasi langsung dari interpretasi teologi Islam.

Abstract: Muslims believe that the Qur’an is authored and revealed by God. It contains Islamic principles, values, and norms by which human should embrace. This model of definition of the Qur’an is akin of God-centred, therefore the Qur’an is framed in the light of theological perspective. Inspite of its theological-foundation, this Holy Scripture develops in the form of human experiences as the language it uses is Arabic. This later understanding leads some Qur’anic experts to expand the study of the Qur’an in the lights of linguistic and literary analysis. The article deals with the methods of linguistic and literary analysis to the Qur’an developed by three important muslim scholars, Amin al-Khuli, Mohammed Arkoun, and Muh ammad Syah rur. Through the comparative approach, the article finds out that those scholars heavily depends on the aspect of language in their analysis. The differences among the three lie in methodological approaches to the Qur’an. Whereas Al-Khuli emphasizes on literary analysis and Arkoun pays a particular attention to the critical reading to linguistic aspect, and Muhammad Syahrur depends on semiotic and inter-textuality of the Qur’annic readings. etiap muslim meyakini al-Qur’an sebagai karya Tuhan yang berisi nilai dan norma tentang kehidupan manusia. Implikasi dari keyakinan ini adalah bahwa penafsiran terhadap al-Qur’an cenderung dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan teologis. Di sisi lain, al-Qur’an juga dipahami sebagai teks Ilahi yang tidak lepas dari hakikatnya sebagai teks berbahasa Arab dan terikat konteks ruang dan waktu dalam pengertian historis dan sosiologis. Sebagai hasil ekspresi kebahasaan dalam struktur budaya Arab, para pemikir muslim kontemporer telah mengembangkan model penafsiran baru terhadap al-Qur’an dengan pendekatan bahasa (linguistik) dan sastra. Tulisan ini mengeksplorasi bagaimana aplikasi pendekatan tersebut dengan menganalisis pemikiran tiga tokoh, meliputi Amin al-Khuli, Mohammed Arkoun, dan Muh ammad Syah rur. Dengan analisis komparatif, penulis menemukan bahwa ketiga tokoh tersebut menggunakan bahasa sebagai sumber analisis. Perbedaan pemikiran mereka terletak pada aspek metodologi, yaitu Al-Khuli menekankan pada metode analisis sastra, Arkoun menggunakan pendekatan linguistik dalam tahap linguistik kritis dan hubungan kritis, dan Muhammad Syahrur lebih berorientasi pada metode semiotik dan intratektualitas.

Abstract: Artikel ini membincangkan mengenai pemikiran ‘Mahathirisme’ yang merupakan satu pengamatan terhadap perlambangan falsafah pemikiran politik Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. Istilah ‘Mahathirisme’ dicetuskan dari idea yang melihat keunikan pentadbiran Dr. Mahathir bersama falsafah dan cara pengurusan negara yang ingin dibawanya ke arah negara maju pada tahun 2020. Mahathirisme sebenarnya boleh dilihat daripada bentuk ideologi politik yang melahirkan lima komponen dasar pemerintahan beliau, iaitu nasionalisme, kapitalisme, Islam, populisme dan autoritarianisme. Di samping itu, terdapat empat faktor utama yang membentuk falsafah pemikiran politik beliau iaitu keluarga, penjajahan negara, kedoktoran dan ‘C.H.E Det’. Dengan gabungan idea yang diserap dan digubalkan sebagai falsafah, ‘Mahathirisme’ telah berjaya membawa Malaysia sebagai sebuah negara yang disegani dan dihormati di persada antarabangsa.
