Ambiente e água – An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science in its third year of publication  [cached]
Getulio Teixeira Batista
Ambiente e água : An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science , 2008,
Abstract: This April 2008, volume 3, number 1 issue of Ambiente e água – An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Science is a landmark for Ambi-água to achieving national and international recognition. This year it is expected that the primary system for scientific journal evaluation in Brazil, QUALIS CAPES (http://qualis.capes.gov.br/webqualis/) will review the quality and geographical impact of Ambi-água inasmuch as many Lattes curricula of scientists involved in Brazilian post-graduate programs show publications in Ambi-água in the last two years. Batista (2007a) discussed details of CAPES evaluation procedure. In addition to the quality appraisal, CAPES also indicates the regional impact of scientific journals as local, national or international. Once a journal is evaluated by CAPES and has three years of on-time publications, CNPq, the major scientific support agency in Brazil, accepts applications for funding that journal. This may significantly improve the operational facilities of a granted journal. Ambi-água editorial board is proud to announce that since its first issue it has been circulating on-time.
PhD by Publication: A Student's Perspective  [cached]
Lisa Robins,Peter Kanowski
Journal of Research Practice , 2008,
Abstract: This article presents the first author's experiences as an Australian doctoral student undertaking a PhD by publication in the arena of the social sciences. She published nine articles in refereed journals and a peer-reviewed book chapter during the course of her PhD. We situate this experience in the context of current discussion about doctoral publication practices, in order to inform both postgraduate students and academics in general. The article discusses recent thinking about PhD by publication and identifies the factors that students should consider prior to adopting this approach, in terms of university requirements, supervisors' attitudes, the research subject matter, intellectual property, capacity and working style, and issues of co-authorship. It then outlines our perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of undertaking a PhD by publication. We suggest that, in general, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. We conclude by reflecting on how the first author's experiences relate to current discussions about fostering publications by doctoral students.
European Publication issues from an Austrian perspective  [PDF]
CLAUS-CHRISTIAN CARBON
Psychology Science Quarterly , 2009,
Abstract: Publishing in Austria faces several barriers: Austria (1) has a small number of scientists compared with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average and only recently benefited from higher research intensities, (2) it has not yet made the full switch to English as lingua franca, (3) it has not yet developed an efficient Open-Access strategy, (4) it has a lower number of journal gatekeepers than expected by publication output, (5) it faces several legal barriers which interfere with scientific publications. The present article describes the publication situation in Austria in detail and develops strategies for successful publishing in the highly competitive scientific community of future Europe.
Detecting the historical roots of research fields by reference publication year spectroscopy (RPYS)  [PDF]
Werner Marx,Lutz Bornmann,Andreas Barth,Loet Leydesdorff
Computer Science , 2013,
Abstract: We introduce the quantitative method named "reference publication year spectroscopy" (RPYS). With this method one can determine the historical roots of research fields and quantify their impact on current research. RPYS is based on the analysis of the frequency with which references are cited in the publications of a specific research field in terms of the publication years of these cited references. The origins show up in the form of more or less pronounced peaks mostly caused by individual publications which are cited particularly frequently. In this study, we use research on graphene and on solar cells to illustrate how RPYS functions, and what results it can deliver.
The journal's first year of publication and the challenges ahead  [cached]
Israeli Avi,Rosen Bruce
Israel Journal of Health Policy Research , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/2045-4015-1-52
Abstract: The Israel Journal of Health Policy Research (IJHPR) seeks to promote intensive intellectual interactions among scholars and practitioners from Israel and other countries regarding all aspects of health policy and health care, with a special focus on Israel. During 2012, its first year of operation, the journal succeeded in publishing an impressive volume of policy-relevant articles by a remarkably diverse set of authors. The journal's success to date would not have been possible without the vital contributions of the editorial board, the authors, the reviewers, the readers, BioMed Central (the journal's publisher), and the Israel National Institute for Health Policy (the journal's sponsor). The challenges ahead include promoting greater reader involvement, and enhancing the journal's policy and educational impact.
An RFID Application Model for the Publication Industry: A Taiwan Perspective
James T. Lin,Jiang-Liang Hou,Wei-Ching Chen,Chih-Hao Huang
International Journal of Electronic Business Management , 2005,
Abstract: Development and applications of the RFID technology are expected to induce another industrial revolution in the near future. Recently, the RFID technology has been gradually used for production control, merchandise management and logistics management. Concerning the complexity of items and distribution channels, this paper focuses on application of the RFID technology in the publication industry. The characteristics of the distribution and marketing channels of the publication industry are reviewed to explore the business operation requirements and considerations of distinct roles in the channels. Based on the features of the publication industry, a RFID application model is proposed in this study. The corresponding IT backbone as well as its integration with the global information network (i.e., the EPC network) is also revealed. Suggestions and benefits for implementation of the RFID technology in the publication industry are provided to facilitate the operation efficiency of the publication industry.
