The evaluation of 15 years of study of TB contacts done in the western area of the Public Health Service of Santiago de Chile, 1994-2008, is presented. During this period an improvement on the coverage of this studies -even beyond the Ministry of Health aims- was observed. For this purpose the retrospective analysis of cases incorporated during the period was used. For definitions of healthy or diseased contact we followed the Manual of Tuberculosis of the National Tuberculosis Control Program of Chile. 9,344 intra-domicilliary and extra-domicilliary contacts were analized out of 2,129 index cases of bacillary TB and index cases of children with TB. The coverage, morbility, diagnosis of TB and chemoprophylaxis carried out were evaluated. The study of contacts is probably the activity of case finding of the Program of Control ofTuberculosis most useful. In children under 15 years-old allows to find recent infections and treat them with chemoprophylaxis to avoid the development of new patients and the maintenance of the chain of transmission of the disease.

The urban growth of Santiago, and it morphology, is the starting point in the study of the contradictions between the plans for Santiago and its results. The author also notes that the differences between the scales of planning is also an issue in the attempt to perform a better regional and local planning.

The use of illegal drugs is an issue that has raised both international and national concern. This paper deals with the descriptive results from a household survey of the use of marijuana and cocaine in a population aged from 15 to 64 in Santiago, Chile. Life prevalence of use was 19.0% for marijuana, 4.5% for cocaine, and 2.2% for coca paste; annual prevalence was 5.4%, 1.8% and 0.8%; and last month prevalence was 3.2%, 0.7%, and 0.3% for each substance. Median age for initial use was 17.9 years for marijuana and 20.3 for coca paste. Those surveyed considered the use of paste to be the most risky, followed by cocaine and marijuana. Higher ratings of dependency were observed in the users of coca paste. Rates of use were similar to those of previous national and regional studies, but considerably lower than those of developed countries
