Kayoko Yamamoto,Motokazu Ando
IUCN Otter Specialist Group Bulletin , 2011,
Abstract: To understand the chronological change in people’s interests and attitudes toward the Japanese otter, which became extinct during the 1990s, the number and contents of otter-related newspaper articles over 135 years were investigated. This investigation shows that, in the consciousness of people, the otter shifted gradually from being the animal of a neighborhood in the 19th century, economic value in the early 20th, conservation need in the late 20th, and symbolic value after 2000. Presently, the number of otter articles is progressively decreasing owing to a lack of news.
The Press of Northern Argentina at the Crossroads of Cultural Communication. The Literary Page of the Newspaper La Gaceta (1949-1951)  [cached]
Dda. Ana María Risco
Revista Latina de Comunicación Social , 2008,
Abstract: In this article, we investigate the strategies used by the director of a newspaper to constitute a transcendental cultural project in the journalism of Northern Argentina. The case studied is that of the literary section of the newspaper La Gaceta, from Tucumán, which is considered of primary importance for the development of the written press of the region during the 20th century. Our research does theoretically and methodologically form part of the sociology of culture. We follow, on the one hand, Pierre Bourdieu’s postulates on the intellectual field and the creator project for the description of the literary page of the above mentioned newspaper as a two-dimensional project: individual and collective at the same time. On the other hand, we coincide with Raymond Williams’ conceptualizations on the organization of culture. We also consider the case we study as part of cultural journalism, focusing on some theoretical matters and analyzing the configuration of such section from the perspective of its director, Daniel Alberto Dessein.

Abstract: The process which created the conditions for the development of mass media press in Brazil was consolidated in the first half of the 20th Century with the emergence of newspaper companies based on an industrial form of production, the modernization of the writing style and design, plus the use of photography as a newsy element. There was a strong investment in technology in order to modernize the nation and photography, as a technical image par excellence, started to portray the acceleration of the passage of time that was accentuated by the 1890’s. In the beginning of the 20th century a new technological trend occurred mediated by the photographic apparatus and diffused through the newspaper and illustrated magazines pages that were multiplying in the nation’s capital, Rio de Janeiro1. The press used photography and a series of technological artifacts to acquire the status of a modern entity and multiply the number of readers, changing its forms of production and its auto-referential discourse, starting to be more and more the icon of modernity. The technologies capable of giving a wider dimension to the concept of time and space were decisive in shaping the new symbolic world which emerged since the turn of the century. The world got closer and more visible, the perception of the “other” changed gradually and temporality took on a new dimension. This article traces a panorama of the use of photography by the main newspapers published in the capital of Brazil in the first half of the 20th century, seeking in photography the reflection of the modernizing process that Brazilian society desired and underwent.

地理研究 , 2005,
Abstract: The origin and development of cities of Northeast China have a long history along with the formation of their peculiar civilization. But, before the 20th century, the level of urbanization in Northeast China lagged behind that in Central China for a long period of time due to some historical reasons. Modern cities of Northeast China originated in the early 20th century. Since the 20th century, Northeast China had gone through the immigrating and opening-up policies of the Qing government, later been invaded and occupied by the imperialist nations such as Russia and Japan for several decades. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Northeast China has ever been the key region of China's industrialization. Today, due to economic growth and dramatic reform of economic structure, Northeast China's urban development has stepped into the rapid developing period, and been one of the regions with the highest standard of urbanization in China except for several municipalities directly under the central government, and made the great contribution to Chinese economy. Compared with other cities of China, cities of Northeast China have a special political and economic background, and clearly reflect the feature of synchronous developing and mutual promoting in the course of both urbanization and industrialization. In the paper, the authors identify the development mechanism of cities of Northeast China in the 20th century by revealing the relationships between the development of cities of Northeast China and their economic and social development. Simultaneously, the authors also analyze the historic role of the development of cities of Northeast China and some current major problems restricting their development in the course of renewing the old industrial base of Northeast China.

NaUKMA Research Papers. Linguistics , DOI: 10.18523/2616-8502.2018.88-93
Abstract: Background. Study of the semantic and functional peculiarities of metaphor in the texts of social and political communication, which feature is that they contain an effective meaning, capable of generating and consolidating the stereotypes of mass consciousness, instilling precise assessments and instructions to the addressees, forming the corresponding type of social behavior, is still relevant in the linguistic science. This paper provides the study of the semantics and functions of metaphorical compounds in the political discourse of the Soviet era, the main feature of which is their standardization and strict regulation of language means. Therefore, it is important to study the peculiarities of metaphorical semantics in terms of ritual-symbolic communication. The texts of party documents of the 1970s of the 20th century and texts of leading articles of the newspaper “Radyanska Ukrayina” (Soviet Ukraine), the main press organ of the Communist Party of Soviet Ukraine, are the source of the analysis. Purpose. The purpose of the paper is to generalize metaphorical meanings and to determine their functions in the Ukrainian Soviet discourse of the 70th of 20 century. Methods. Research methods are descriptive, conceptual, structural-semantic analysis, partly component analysis, and discourse analysis. The cognitive theory of a metaphor of J. Lacoff and M. Johnson, supplemented by the semantic-cognitive theory of a conceptual metaphor of O. M. Baranov and Yu. M. Karaulov, is the theoretical basis of our study. Results. According to our material, the reference zone for the formation of metaphorical meanings is narrowed down in the semantics of the Ukrainian Soviet discourse and is represented by the concepts common to human consciousness. The main metaphorical meanings are personalization, family, collectivity, struggle, strength, nature, movement, construction, sports. All of them are frequency sensitive and are diffuse in nature. The sameness of semantics and the use of metaphorical models transform them into the sign-ritual constructions, reflecting the basic myths of Soviet discourse. Discussion. In the long run, comprehensive study of a conceptual metaphor, dynamics of its use in Soviet discourse will be effective and important. It will favor a more complete and coherent interpretation of cognitive and semantic features of Soviet discourse.
