ESCRITURAS PARENTAIS E DIáRIOS DE NASCIMENTO (Tradu o). PARENT BIOGRAPHERS. FAMILY SCRIPTURES AND BIRTH DIARIES (Translation)  [PDF]

Revista Eletr?nica de Educa??o , 2011,
Abstract: Este artigo analisa as escrituras parentais acerca do nascimento e da primeira infancia. This paper examines the parental writings about birth and infancy. Biographic fragments or texts, with or without photographies, can fit into the sections of a baby record book. They can also be archived in babies’ diaries or on the Internet, in the family’s blog. Several qualitative researches (FRANCIS, 2006, 2007, 2010) cross various types of data: the structure and the organization of babies’ books, texts written by parents and semi-directives interviews with parents and children. The purpose was to approach the family practices. The results show that the parental writings depict representations of family, childhood and mothers’ and fathers’ roles. At the border of the “self-writings” and “writings for others” (SIMONET-TENANT, 2004; LEJEUNE & BOGAERT, 2006) babies’ books and blogs can be defined as memory objects. They give opportunity of linguistic activities to fix the family history and the family memory. The study of the family practices in blogs and babies’ books underlines the figures of the parent biographer (FRANCIS, 2006) and places also the bibliog

Abstract: In order to explore parenting styles among Brazilian families, 239 children (9-12 yrs old), from two public schools in Curitiba, and their parents answered two scales of parental responsiveness and demandingness. These scales, which categorize four parenting styles, were adapted for use with children (they were originally developed to be anwered by adolescents) and showed satisfactory reliability coefficients (alpha between 0,65 and 0,76). Parents were classified as: negligent (45,4%), authoritative (32,8%), indulgent (11,8%) and authoritarian (10,1%). Although parents have perceived themselves as being more responsive and demanding when compared to the opinions of their children, the correlation between the answers of parents and children was significant and positive. Additionally, the childrens' perceptions of their mothers correlated with that of their fathers. These differences in perception of parenting styles are discussed and the researchers call attention to the high number of negligent families observed.

International Journal of Emotional Education , 2012,
Abstract: The current study examined whether parental monitoring and attachment were related to adolescent beliefs about antisocial acts, with temperament, gender, and age considered as potential moderators. A total of 7135 adolescents, ages 14-18 years, completed self-report measures of antisocial beliefs, parental monitoring, attachment security, and temperament. Results indicate that both attachment security and parental monitoring are associated with adolescent beliefs about antisocial behaviour. It also appears that the two aspects of parenting are complementary, in that a secure attachment relationship is associated with greater parental monitoring knowledge, which in turn is linked with a lower tolerance for antisocial behaviour. However, the relations between these aspects of parenting and beliefs about antisocial acts depended on the young people's characteristics, with some results varying by age, gender and temperament. Implications for future research and parent-focused interventions to prevent antisocial beliefs and behaviour are discussed.

There is strong scientific evidence supporting the close relationship between the educational style, and practices associated with it, as key predictors and determinants of psychosocial development of children and adolescents. The objective of this paper is to understand the influence that parenting has, especially the emotional component and control in the acquisition of emotional and social skills of the young. The methodology consisted in a critical reflection on the literature review carried out. It is concluded that the authoritative style, a parental praxis that maximizes emotional intelligence, with emphasis on proper supervision and moderate disciplinary methods is fundamental to the development of emotionally competent adults preventing, this way, behavioral problems such as internalizing or externalizing.
Consequences of Parenting on Adolescent Outcomes  [PDF]
Donna Hancock Hoskins
Societies , 2014, DOI: 10.3390/soc4030506
Abstract: In recent years, substantial gains have been made in our understanding of the influence of parenting behaviors and styles on adolescent emotional and behavioral outcomes. Empirical work focusing on the associations between parenting and adolescent outcomes is important because the influence of parenting during adolescence continues to affect behaviors into adulthood. Additionally, there has been considerable attention paid to the mechanisms that shape parenting that then influence adolescent outcomes. For instance, researchers have found that neighborhood conditions moderated the association between parenting and adolescent development. In this paper, several covariates and contextual effects associated with parenting and adolescent outcomes will be discussed. Also, parental behaviors, parental styles and adolescent outcomes are discussed in this literature review. This review provides an assessment of the literature on parenting and adolescent outcomes from the past decade and includes advancements in parenting research. The review concludes with a summary of major research findings, as well as a consideration of future directions and implications for practice and policy.
Low dimensional neutron moderators for enhanced source brightness  [PDF]

Abstract: In a recent numerical optimization study we have found that liquid para-hydrogen coupled cold neutron moderators deliver 3 - 5 times higher cold neutron brightness at a spallation neutron source if they take the form of a flat, quasi 2-dimensional disc, in contrast to the conventional more voluminous shapes used by now. In the present paper we describe a simple theoretical explanation of this unexpected behavior, which is based on the large difference in para-hydrogen between the values of the scattering mean free path for thermal neutrons (in the range of 1 cm) and its much larger equivalent for cold neutrons. This model leads to the conclusions that the optimal shape for high brightness para-hydrogen neutron moderators is the quasi 1-dimensional tube and these low dimensional moderators can also deliver much enhanced cold neutron brightness in fission reactor neutron sources, compared to much more voluminous liquid D2 or H2 moderators currently used. Neutronic simulation calculations confirm both of these theoretical conclusions.
Positive Parenting or Positive Psychology Parenting? Towards a Conceptual Framework of Positive Psychology Parenting  [PDF]
Theodoros A. Kyriazos, Anastassios Stalikas
Psychology (PSYCH) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2018.97104
Abstract: The purpose of this work is to highlight the distinctiveness of positive psychology parenting from positive discipline and positive parenting. A second purpose is to frame a positive psychology parenting model adopting the principles proposed by Seligman. The parenting research within the positive psychology approach has been rather inactive. This inactivity could possibly be attributed to the parallel use of the term “positive” concurrently by two additional theoretical frameworks apart from positive psychology, i.e. positive discipline and positive parenting. However, in the case of positive discipline and positive parenting, the term “positive” describes a non-punitive, “firm and kind” parenting style. In the case of Positive Psychology, the term positive refers to the broadening and building effect of positive emotions described by Fredrickson. Additionally, the target population of the positive discipline and positive parenting is mainly (but not exclusively) children of special challenges. Finally, their purpose is mainly prevention and treatment. The target population of positive psychology parenting is normally adjusted children and the purpose is well-being and flourishing of the child and family. These three elements—meaning of the term “positive”, target population and purpose— differentiate positive discipline and positive parenting from the Positive Psychology parenting model proposed by Seligman. The differences are equivalent to the different approach of “psychology as usual” from positive psychology.
