Abstract:

The compost production has been poorly explored in the agricultural areas of Mexico City. Farmers tend to use fresh manure as fertilizer on soil cultivation. The borough of Milpa Alta, as the main nopal producer in Mexico, requires a high amount of fertilizers to guarantee the fulfillment of yields and times of cultivation. Nevertheless the wide use of manure as only fertilizer implies several negative aspects not only for the crop but also for the environment. The compost is presented as a feasible option to improve the quality of crops and also to diminish the production cost. Compost has features and benefits that are directly reflected in the decrease of costs against the economic and conservation costs emerged with the use of fresh manure. The present research aims to evaluate the alternative use of harmless compost with quality to be used in agriculture. It was carried out through an analysis in an experimental plant built exclusively for the project. The main goal is to demonstrate the cost reduction in the nopal production in Milpa Alta by using compost instead of fresh manure.

Determinación de insecticidas organofosforados en nopal fresco y deshidratado  [cached]

Abstract: El este estudio se identificaron y cuantificaron los insecticidas organofosforados presentes en cladodios de nopal (Opuntia ficus indica) fresco y deshidratado, mediante extracción con el método de fasesólida dispersiva, e identificación y cuantificación por cromatografía de gases. Se muestrearon seis campos de nopal cercanos a Hermosillo, Sonora, México, y se llevó a cabo una encuesta para conocer los antecedentes del predio referentes al tipo y frecuencia de aplicación del insecticida, así como área, número de plantas, fecha de plantación y cosecha. Los insecticidas organofosforados analizados fueron malatión, paratión metílico, diazinón y clorpirifos. Los porcentajes de recuperación del método de extracción fueron de 90 a 96 %, con una variación de 12 %. En todas las muestras de nopal fresco (n= 24), 60 % contenía tres de los insecticidas analizados, y en el resto hubo los cuatro insecticidas. El malatión se detectó en 97 % de las muestras, pero siempre por debajo de los límites máximos de residuos (LMRs) para hortalizas. Además se detectaron residuos de dos insecticidas no autorizados para su uso en hortalizas (clorpirifos y paratión metílico). El nopal deshidratado no presentó residuos de insecticidas. En las muestras de nopal fresco las concentraciones de insecticidas fueron menores al valor de la ingesta diaria admisible, para malatión, paratión metílico, diazinón y clorpirifos. El potencial de riesgo toxicológico proveniente del consumo de nopal fresco y su producto deshidratado es mínimo, ya que la ingesta diaria estimada fue 1000 veces menor que la dosis admisible.
Nopal Cactus (Opuntia Ficus-Indica) as a Holographic Material  [PDF]

Abstract: The nopal cactus ( Opuntia ficus-indica) releases a substance through its mucilage, which comes from the degradation of pectic substances and chlorophyll. Combined in a polyvinyl alcohol matrix, this substance can be used as a recording medium. The resulting extract material has excellent photosensitizer properties, is easy to handle, has a low cost, and low toxicity. This material has the property of self-developing, and it can be used in holographic applications. The polyvinyl alcohol and extract from the nopal cactus was deposited by a gravity technique on a glass substrate, which dried to form a photosensitive emulsion. We show experimental results on a holographic grating using this material, written by a He-Cd laser (442 nm). We obtained diffraction gratings by transmission with a diffraction efficiency of approximately 32.3% to first order.

Abstract: the nopal (opuntia spp.) is a basic species of food staple in méxico, since around this product spins innumerable economic activities of the countryside and industry. in addition, the nopal can be considered as a functional food, this is, improves health of those who consume it. the aim of this study was to compare the gain with a traditional nopal crop with one crop where resources are invested to give it a higher aggregate value. the traditional evaluation obtaining the present net value, and an evaluation with real options that, compared with the traditional evaluation, includes the price volatility and the decision-making that people in charge of the project can take. in the second evaluation binomial trees and black-scholes formulas are used with an option to expand up to 6 ha. evaluations were done to compare the benefit-cost ratio and the critical value in the federal district, state of méxico, and states of morelos, guanajuato, baja california, aguascalientes, and around the country. the analysis of the results showed that there are greater benefits from investment in the production of nopal with a higher aggregate value, a situation that is clearly seen using the tools of real options.

Abstract: The effect of blanching and drying air temperature on nopal pieces was investigated. Their drying behavior in a fluidized bed was studied at four different temperatures (50 oC, 60 oC, 70 oC and 80 oC). Drying curves were constructed using dimensionless moisture ratio (MR) and time; and their behavior was modeled using Henderson-Pabis, Power, Peleg and Page models. The results indicated that drying took place mainly when the period of dry-ing rate decreased. The moisture effective diffusivity (Def) values varied from 0.818x10-7 to 3.25x10-7 m2 s-1 depending on drying conditions. The activation energy (Ea) values were: 35.85 kJ/mol for the nopal without blanching and 28.21 kJ/mol for the blanching nopal respectively. Peleg and Page′s models were found the most suitable for describing the dry-ing behavior of nopal. Se investigó el efecto del escaldado y la temperatura del aire de secado en trozos de nopal. El experimento se realizó en un secador de lecho fluidizado a cuatro temperaturas diferentes (50 oC, 60 oC, 70 oC y 80 oC). Las curvas de secado se obtuvieron al graficar la razón de humedad adimensional (MR) contra el tiempo de secado; su comportamiento se modeló utilizando los modelos de Henderson-Pabis, Potencia, Peleg y Page. Los resultados mostraron que el secado se llevó a cabo principalmente en el periodo de velocidad decreciente. Los valores de la difusividad efectiva (Def) variaron de 0.818x10-7 a 3.25x10-7 m2 s

Abstract: Es de importancia económica obtener fruta y brote tierno de nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica) en épocas fuera de temporada de producción, para aprovechar los altos precios de venta en el mercado. El propósito de este trabajo fue determinar el efecto del anillado parcial en la época de producción del nopal. El anillado realizado a fines de diciembre aumentó en 50 % el número de brotes florales y con adelanto de 55 d respecto al testigo sin anillar, y los frutos fueron cosechados 51 d antes que el testigo. El anillado parcial también provocó disminución de la tasa de transpiración.

Abstract: use of nopal dietary fiber in a powder dessert formulation. the development of diverse types of foods of low caloric value and with high content in dietary fiber have occupied a preponderant place in the food industry in the last years, due to the growing interest of the consumers for a healthy and nutritious diet. pre-cooked or quick to prepare foods are attractive for the time they save; if to this you add their nutritious value, the attractiveness is even greater. for this reason, this study analyzes different formulations of a powder to prepare a dessert (flan), with different percentages of incorporation of nopal flour, as a source of dietary fiber (16, 18, 20%). two flavors (melon and banana) were tried. it was observed that the flan flavored with banana and with 16% of nopal flour, reached better sensorial characteristics. greater percentages of nopal flour negatively affected the sensorial characteristics, mainly flavor, color and texture. the analysis showed that the powder presented 5,7% of moisture, low water activity (0,48) and therefore a low total recount of microorganisms. the content of protein was high (27,2%), the ether extract low (2,0%) similar to the caloric contribution (40 kcal/ portion). the flan showed a 9,8% of total dietary fiber, being greater the contribution of soluble fiber (6,1%)than that of insoluble fiber (3,7%). due to these characteristics this formulation could be considered as a food that provides benefits for the human health.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to utilize fresh cactus as a source of dietary fiber and calciumin pound cake formulations. Five pound cake formulations using fresh cactus (Opuntiaamyclaea Tenore) were developed (four with sucralosa, one of them without cactus andone with sugar cane and cactus). Sensory evaluation was performed by 60 untrained judgesand based on a preference assay with a hedonic scale from 1 to 9. Protein (Nx6.25),lipids, ashes, carbohydrates, total dietary fiber, calcium and phosphorus were determinedaccording to the methods of the AOAC, (1990). The results showed protein contentsfrom 9.54 to 10.08, moisture from 35.75 to 40.00, lipids from 2.29 g/100 g y 2.44 g/100g fresh weight. The sensory evaluation indicated a good acceptation. The concentrationof dietary fiber ranged from 8.7% to 10.43% g/100 g, and the calcium concentration from0.27 to 0.37 g/100 g. Energy content ranged from 216.02kcal to 225.98kcal kJ/100 g,50 % less than that in commercial pound cakes. Owing to their high fiber and calciumcontents, low caloric value and lack of sugar, pound cakes prepared according to theseformulations might be a healthy option for diabetic and obese people. El objetivo de este trabajo fue utilizar nopal fresco en la formulación de panqués para incrementar su contenido de fibra dietética y calcio. Se desarrollaron cinco formulaciones de panqués utilizando nopal fresco (Opuntia amyclaea Tenore), 4 con sucralosa (una testigo sin nopal) y una con azúcar y nopal. Se evaluaron sensorialmente por 60 jueces no entrenados mediante la prueba de preferencia, utilizando una escala hedónica del 1 al 9. Se les determinó el contenido de proteína (Nx6.25), humedad, cenizas, lípidos, hidratos de carbono, fibra dietética total, calcio y fósforo por los métodos de la AOAC, (1990). Los resultados revelaron contenidos de proteínas (Nx6.25) entre 9.54 y 10.08, de humedad entre 35.75 y 40.00, de cenizas, 2.29 g/100 g y 2.44 g/100 g peso húmedo. La evaluación sensorial mostró una buena aceptación, los contenidos de fibra dietética total estuvieron entre 8.27 % y 10.43 % y los de calcio entre 0.27 y 0.375 g/100 g. El valor calórico fue de 216.02 kcal a 225.68 kcal kJ/100 g de panqué, aproximadamente 50 % menos que los que se ofrecen en el mercado. Por su alto contenido de fibra y calcio, ausencia de azúcar y bajo valor calórico estos productos podrían ser una opción saludable para personas diabéticas y obesas.

Abstract: Este artículo es el resultado de una investigación sociológica sobre la noticia falsa que circuló a nivel nacional y en Milpa Alta, al sur de la Ciudad de México. Al examinar las diferentes versiones del rumor periodístico de la importación de nopal chino a México, logramos mostrar cómo se articularon los intereses inmediatos de los agentes colectivos implicados, con temáticas de corte histórico, racial, y económico.
