Abstract: This paper presents the features of the teachers of History of the education municipal system of Belo Horizonte City (Minas Gerais State) and explores some of their conceptions of History. It shows that the group of teachers is well informed, interested in receiving support and having opportunities and resources for the development of a more creative and meaningful pedagogical practice.

Com a funda o da Faculdade de Medicina de Belo Horizonte, o embri o da especialidade foi estabelecido pelos neuropsiquiatras. Os professores José Geraldo Albernaz e Gilberto Belisário Campos iniciaram nas décadas de 50 e 60 deste século a moderna neurologia em Belo Horizonte.

Abstract: this article, focusing on public policies for inclusive education, emphasizes the formation of teachers to work with students who have special educational needs. the survey, conducted in 2007/2008 in a state school in belo horizonte aimed to investigate the training of teachers for the education, evaluate the process of inclusion of students mentioned in a government school in bh. methodologically, we focused on the questionnaire that drew the outline of 25 teachers from the school. ten teachers were interviewed, the school director and the manager of the directorate of special education (deep). in synthesis, these data were collected: all teachers were in favor of inclusive education, none of which had capacity to work with this education, only two knew a bit of legislation on inclusive education, all said both have difficulty dealing with those students, and that large dropout of them.

Abstract: investigations on the prevalence rates of multiple sclerosis (ms) around the world have yielded important clues on the interplay between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. as brazil is a huge country laid on many latitudes and inhabited by population with distinct ethnic backgrounds, it might be assumed that the frequency of ms varies in its different regions. objective: to determine the prevalence rate of ms in belo horizonte, the capital of the state of minas gerais, southeastern brazil. methods: we used six sources to draw up a provisional list of identified cases of ms. only patients with diagnosis of clinically definite ms according to poser committee criteria were included. results: the calculated crude ms prevalence was 18.1/100,000 inhabitants. conclusions: the ms prevalence in belo horizonte is similar to that found in s?o paulo and botucatu, two other cities in southeastern brazil with similar ethnic background.

Abstract: the right to enroll students with special needs in regular schools in brazil is guaranteed by law since the 1988 constitution. ministry of education school census data indicates that the number of students with special needs enrolled in regular schools in the country has increased over the years, especially in the municipal system of education. among the students regarded as having "special needs" are those with autism, who show impairment in social interaction, communication and stereotypical behavior patterns. the city of belo horizonte - mg has been taking action in order to improve access for students with autism in regular schools in the city, but data of the progress of this process is scarce. the purpose of this research was to characterize the students with autism enrolled in regular public schools in belo horizonte, as well as describe the way in which this schooling is occurring in regular schools, from the perspective of the teachers. thirty-three teachers who had direct and daily contact with students with autism in regular schools in the city participated in this research. a semi-structured questionnaire and the childhood autism rating scale (cars) were used. the results indicated that the strategies used by the city seem to enable the presence of the students with autism in the schools, but there is evidence that their participation in school activities is restricted, the interactions with their peers is scarce, and the content learned from the school curriculum is limited.
Comparison of Perceptual Signs of Voice before and after Vocal Hygiene Program in Adults with Dysphonia  [PDF]

Abstract: Background and Aim: Vocal abuse and misuse are the most frequent causes of voice disorders. Consequently some therapy is needed to stop or modify such behaviors. This research was performed to study the effectiveness of vocal hygiene program on perceptual signs of voice in people with dysphonia.Methods: A Vocal hygiene program was performed to 8 adults with dysphonia for 6 weeks. At first, Consensus Auditory- Perceptual Evaluation of Voice was used to assess perceptual signs. Then the program was delivered, Individuals were followed in second and forth weeks visits. In the last session, perceptual assessment was performed and individuals’ opinions were collected. Perceptual findings were compared before and after the therapy.Results: After the program, mean score of perceptual assessment decreased. Mean score of every perceptual sign revealed significant difference before and after the therapy (p≤0.0001). Loudness had maximum score and coordination between speech and respiration indicated minimum score. All participants confirmed efficiency of the therapy.Conclusion: The vocal hygiene program improves all perceptual signs of voice although not equally. This deduction is confirmed by both clinician-based and patient-based assessments. As a result, vocal hygiene program is necessary for a comprehensive voice therapy but is not solely effective to resolve all voice problems.

Abstract: nowadays in brazil old endemic diseases, which had been forgotten, resurge with great impact and, many times, with mortality profiles different from those already known. this is the case of visceral leishmaniasis, a typical rural disease associated with precarious conditions of life. the belo horizonte city, minas gerais state, faces, since 1993, an epidemic of both human and canine visceral leishmaniasis. this work presents the historical reconstruction of the disease and characterizes some demographic aspects of the human cases. apparently, the disease was introduced in belo horizonte from existing focos in neighboring towns. the spatial evolution of the epidemic showed that the canine cases had preceded the human cases confirming the importance of dogs as reservoir of calazar in urban areas. the risk of infection was higher in children under 15 years old. the situation of belo horizonte city illustrates very well the process of urbanization of rural diseases occurring in some brazilian cities.
Back-and-Forth Methodology for Objective Voice Quality Assessment: From/to Expert Knowledge to/from Automatic Classification of Dysphonia  [cached]

Abstract: This paper addresses voice disorder assessment. It proposes an original back-and-forth methodology involving an automatic classification system as well as knowledge of the human experts (machine learning experts, phoneticians, and pathologists). The goal of this methodology is to bring a better understanding of acoustic phenomena related to dysphonia. The automatic system was validated on a dysphonic corpus (80 female voices), rated according to the GRBAS perceptual scale by an expert jury. Firstly, focused on the frequency domain, the classification system showed the interest of 0–3000 Hz frequency band for the classification task based on the GRBAS scale. Later, an automatic phonemic analysis underlined the significance of consonants and more surprisingly of unvoiced consonants for the same classification task. Submitted to the human experts, these observations led to a manual analysis of unvoiced plosives, which highlighted a lengthening of VOT according to the dysphonia severity validated by a preliminary statistical analysis.
