Lazer, modernidade, capitalismo: um olhar a partir da obra de Edward Palmer Thompson
Melo, Victor Andrade de;
Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-21862010000100001
Abstract: the consolidation process of the industrial mode of production slowly configures a clear distinction between the working time and the free time. what relation can be established between this new dynamic of social times and the tensions related to the making of a new set of behaviours considered adequate for the consolidation of capitalism? this study aims at debating the dealing of this issue in the work of edward palmer thompson. it seems possible to say that, for him, the controlling of the non-working time and the leisure practices was comprehended as an essential dimension in order to guaranteeing "progress".
Review of "Proteins of the Cerebrospinal Fluid" (2nd Edition) by Edward J. Thompson
James R Connor
Fluids and Barriers of the CNS , 2007, DOI: 10.1186/1743-8454-4-1
Abstract: My review of this book by Dr. Thompson is written in the context of the reason I was drawn to this book and agreed to read the book and provide a review. I was drawn to the book based on its title because my research group was about to make a significant commitment to proteomic analyses of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in both animal models and human disease states. I expected that, although I was familiar with CSF and the proteins that I had been studying for many years, this book would provide a foundation and reference for me and the postdoctoral fellows and students in my laboratory as we expanded our studies into the CSF. The forward indicated that the book "makes for an encyclopedia type of book for laboratory directors, experimentalists, etc". Therefore I was looking for a book on proteomics of the CSF and perhaps a state of the art assessment of protein profiling in the CSF. The first chapter of the book, a historical perspective on CSF proteins, mentions mostly IgG and associated methodologies. In Chapter 6 the discussion on pros and cons of qualitative versus quantitative analysis, a key issue in the evolving world of proteomics, is focused on IgG as the "central issue' in the studies of CSF proteins. In addition, the options for quantitative approaches do not provide much information on the strengths of ELISAs or even radioimmunoassays. The protocols are somewhat dated but in a historical context; a reasonable resource. Thus, this book is predominantly focused on immunoglobulins in the CSF with a particular focus on the oligoclonal IgG bands in multiple sclerosis. In the latter sense the book is an excellent resource and outstanding review of the field and the new investigator wishing to study immunoglobulin in the CSF can benefit from the comments of the author as a leader in this area from its beginning. As a resource itself, the book has 1,322 references. The reader interested in the broader topic of proteins in the CSF may find this book does not meet
Luciana Marino do Nascimento
Revista Recorte , 2011,
Abstract: In this work we intend to do a poetry reading of Juvenal Antunes, focused on the literary figure who was active in the city, and whose work was produced in the distant Amazon, parallel to the literary movements of the 20 and 30 decades in major urban centers, realizing that, although distance and difficulties of communication, Acre also took place in the practice of literature.
António Lobo Antunes: Production and Consumption of Subjectivity  [cached]
Aino Rinhaug
Review of European Studies , 2009, DOI: 10.5539/res.v1n2p3
Abstract: António Lobo Antunes (1942-) is one of Portugal’s leading contemporary authors, whose reputation as a world-class writer is confirmed by the number of publications, translations and dedicated readers. The present article is concerned with his latest novel, O arquipélago da insónia, or The Archipelago of Insomnia, if translated into English. The text represents a great challenge insofar as reading and understanding of contemporary literature is concerned. As in several of his earlier works, Lobo Antunes continues to explore the limits of narration and readability by experimenting on narrative structure and voice. The focus of my analysis is the organisation and structure of the work, which I regard as autopoietic, or self-generating. I intend to look at how the various voices, or subjectivities in the novel relate in a productive, but also consumptive fashion, in order to maintain the continuous process of making literature.

Educa??o & Sociedade , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302010000200012
Abstract: this paper investigates the connections between the ideas of two prominent twentieth century's social thinkers, the italian antonio gramsci and the english edward thompson. it sets a discussion on the importance these intellectuals granted to politics, culture and human education to highlight similar aspects in both works yet considering that one of the main sources of thompson's historiographic thought is gramsci's work. it then reflects on the heuristic possibilities this dialogue may bring to the field of education. it concludes that gramsci and thompson's reflections converge on three main aspects: the emphasis on working class history, the option for a historical approach of knowledge and the discussion on the conceptions of culture and education.

Abstract: ricardo de almeida jorge amélia ricon ferraz. arq med 2008;22:91-100. on the 150th anniversary of the birth of ricardo de almeida jorge (1858-1939), it was necessary to pay tribute to such remarkable personality of portuguese medicine. a man of great learning and wisdom, he could speak and write about the most diverse topics on medicine as well as on biology, philosophy, pedagogy or scientific, historic and literary criticism. university professor, municipal doctor, founder and director of various state-run organisations, he succeeded, due to his good judgement and meticulous methodology, in sensitising public authorities in order to improve the theory and practice of hygiene and public health in portugal. his reputation has gone beyond national boundaries and today ricardo jorge’s work, particularly in the field of epidemiology, has gained international recognition. the late 19th century breakthroughs in the field of microbiology dramatically transformed modern medical science particularly preventive medicine. a global perspective was necessary in order to understand the importance of ricardo de almeida jorge’s life and work.
