Abstract: the monthly analysis of maturity stage frequency suggested that spawning of the grey triggerfish balistes capriscus (gmelin, 1788) is annual, total and occurs from november to february in the south of s?o paulo state, brazil. size at first maturity is 169 mm for females and 200 mm for males. condition factor estimated considering and disconsidering gonad weight (k and k') showed maximum values related to periods of higher frequency of females at advanced maturity stage. δk was higher in december, january and february, and was related to the maximum frequency of mature females. as k estimates the gonad condition it could be used as a maturity and breeding season index for this species. the gonadosomatic relation behaved the same as k values.

Abstract: The length-weight relationship, age, growth parameters, spawning, sex ratio, first maturity length and fecundity of gray triggerfish (Balistes capriscus G. 1789) were studied using 195 specimens from the Iskenderun Bay. Females made up 43% and males 57% of the individuals. The total length of females ranged from 8.0 to 24.5 cm and of males from 7.9 to 25.5 cm. The length-weight relationships for male and female were W=0.0386*L2.76 and W=0.0352*L2.78, respectively. The age data, derived from dorsal spin readings, were used to estimate the growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation. L8=39.0 cm, K=0.257, to=-0.79. The maximum age group determined was 3 for both sexes. The monthly values of gonadosomatic index (GSI) indicated that the spawning of gray triggerfish occurred mainly between May and July. Gray triggerfish attained first sexual maturity after 1 age (13 cm total length).
Factors influencing the establishment of dominance hierar-chies of the grey triggerfish Balistes capriscus  [cached]

Abstract: Unlike other balistids, grey triggerfish Balistes capriscus occur in social groups in subtropical reef assemblages and have been noted to cooperate in capturing large crustacean prey. The objective of this study were to determine the structure of dominance hierarchies of these social groups and the factors that influence hierarchies of wild-caught grey triggerfish in a naturalistic setting. From observations of four groups of triggerfish (n = 19 fish) in both dyad and group (4 – 5 fish) settings, we provide a description of triggerfish behaviors and coloration patterns and an explanation of the social context in which suites of behaviors are used by dominant, middle-ranking, and subordinate fish. Sixteen behaviors and nine coloration patterns were noted for grey triggerfish. Grey triggerfish groups form linear hierarchies in both dyads and groups as measured by Landau’s Index of Linearity (h = 1.0 for Groups 1, 3, and 4 and h = 0.95 for Group 2 in dyads; h = 1.0 for all groups in group settings). Dyadic hierarchies, however, were not necessarily good predictors of the hierarchies found in larger group settings, as they only predicted two of the four group hierarchies. Sex played no role in influencing status or behavior. Size had the greatest influence on dominance status, with larger fish being more dominant than smaller fish. An individual’s dominance ranking influenced both body coloration and posture. These results suggest that color patterns and body postures may also be used by observers as an indicator of an individual’s social status in groups [Current Zoology 56 (1): 18–35 2010].
Distribution and Growth of Grey Triggerfish, Balistes capriscus (Family: Balistidae), in Western Gulf of Guinea

Abstract: The grey triggerfish, Balistes capriscus, resource had declined for nearly two decades in West African waters; its distribution and growth remain to be reported after late 1980s. In order to fill this gap, specimens were collected during small pelagic fish stock assessment surveys in 2005 in coastal waters of Benin, Togo, Ghana and La C te d’Ivoire (Western Gulf of Guinea) from 17 out of 165 swept-area hauls in depths range of 23–60 m. The modal size classes were 27.0–31.9 cm and 32.0–36.9 cm. The age classes were determined by interpreting growth rings on sections of first dorsal spines. Estimates of theoretical growth in length were obtained by fitting the observed length-at-age data to the standard form of von Bertalanffy growth equation. The estimated L∞ for B. capriscus was 45.1 ± 1.4 cm and the growth rate, K, was 0.21 yr-1. The phi prime ( ’) growth performance obtained was 2.63, which is comparable to that obtained in the 1980s on the same fish species in waters of Senegal, La C te d’Ivoire and Ghana. The results suggest that the growth and distribution of grey triggerfish in the Western Gulf of Guinea had not changed, in spite of the apparent disappearance of the fish species in many areas of the West African coastal waters for nearly two decades.
Age and growth of the queen triggerfish Balistes vetula (tetraodontiformes, balistidae) of the central coast of Brazil

Abstract: dorsal spines (n=649) of the queen triggerfish balistes vetula were collected between 1997 to 1999 at the central coast of brazil and used to evaluate fish growth. the marginal increment analysis validated that 1 increment was formed annually (n=476), with minimum values observed at the summer, and coinciding with the maximum proportion of translucent growth bands. fish's maximum fork length and age were 460 mm and 14 years respectively. the parameters of the von bertalanffy function were: fl∞ = 441.3 mm, k = 0.14 and t0= -1.8. weight gain by year ranged from about 110 g yr-1 for age 5 to about 30 g yr-1 for age 14. compared to other studies, b. vetula growth in the central coast of brazil was slow, which could be related to the influence of the oligotrophic water from brazil current. our results indicate that b. vetula's fisheries in the central coast of brazil until 1999 have caught mostly adult individuals over the sexual maturation lenght, 60% of them with ages from 6 to 8 yr.

Abstract: Intenting to add scientic knowledge to popular culture and about fish species available in South Coast of Rio Grande do Sul, the objective of this paper was chemical characterization of two fishes species, Balistes capriscus (peixe-porco) and Meticirrhus littoralis (papa-terra) that the local population believes in its pharmacologic properties to asthma treatment. The fishes were collected in industries and in the public market of the city. The edible part(muscle) were separated from the skin, so characterized. The chemical composition was determined by methods AOAC International (2000), except the lipids that were quantified by method Bligh and Dyer (1959). The phospholipids were determined in the lipids fraction by spectrophotometry in according to German standard methodology described by Esteves, Gon alves e Barrera-Arellano (1995) adapted to fish lipids. The muscle and skin of the peixe porco and papa-terra presented, respectively, average of 78,5 and 71,5; 80 and 75.5% of humidity; 1,4 and 11; 1,2 and 0.8% of ash; 18,8 and 16,7; 17,6 and 18.5% of protein; 0,77 and 0,5; 0,82 and 7% of lipids. The phospholipids values obtained were 17,2 mg. g-1 of LT (total lipids) and 11,3 mg.g-1 of TL for muscle and skin of the peixe porco and 5,8 mg. g-1 TL and 2,04 mg. g-1 of TL for muscle and skin of the papa-terra. The relations of hospholipids/total lipids in the muscle and skin from the two species were like the others marine species cited by the literature . However in the skin of peixe-porco the level of phospolipids is upper five that in skin of papa-terra. Abstract: the balistidae, especially balistes vetula are commom fishes in tropical waters from northeastern brazil. studies about these fishes captured at the coastal area of recife between pina; boa viagem, piedade and candeias beaches were carried out in order to determine the diet, and to verify a possible diet diversification between the sexes, and times of the year. males and females had a food diet consisting mostly of molluscs belonging the classes scaphopoda, bivalvia, gastropoda and crustaceans and fishes. echinoderms, foraminifera, bryozoa, sponges, polychaete worms, coelenterates and brachiopods were also observed in smaller proportions. both males and females had a carnivorous benthic diet. growth and changes in the seasons were not reflected by changes in the diet.

Abstract: El hallazgo de tres ejemplares de Balistes polylepis Steindachner, 1876; un ejemplar de Sphoeroides lobatus Steindachner, 1870 y un ejemplar de Mola mola Linnaeus, 1758, en la costa de San Antonio y tres ejemplares de M. ramsayi (Giglioli, 1833), permite aumentar la distribución geográfica conocida de estas especies desde el norte hasta la costa central de Chile. La presencia de estas especies está asociada con los efectos de los fenómenos El Ni o 1982-83 y 1997-98 The finding of three specimens of Balistes polylepis Steindachner, 1876, in San Antonio (33o35`S), Santo Domingo (33o37`S) and Cartagena (33o32`S) and one specimen of Sphoeroides lobatus Steindachner, 1870 in Matanza (33o58`S) and one specimen of Mola mola Linnaeus, 1758 and three specimens of M. ramsayi (Giglioli, 1833), to the west of Las Cruces (33o31`S) increases the known geographic distribution for these species from northern Chile to central Chile.
