Richard Rorty in Context  [PDF]
Brian Lloyd
Humanities , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/h2030404
Abstract: Richard Rorty was a strong contextualist in his approach to philosophical and political ideas, yet his own most characteristic arguments are typically evaluated without much reference to the historical circumstances that provoked them. A key participant in the post-1980 revival of pragmatism within North American and European intellectual circles, Rorty reaffirmed the strong connections between American pragmatism and German idealism. This move placed him at odds with scholars who forged the unity of pragmatism—united John Dewey and William James—under the banner of radical empiricism. Those engaged most enthusiastically in celebrating Rorty’s achievements, in short, defend a conception of pragmatism that Rorty sharply criticized and ideas about the history of philosophy that he did not share. His distinctive intellectual agenda is best appreciated after setting it in the context of the history of the American Left and, more specifically, the reckoning with the tumultuous 1960s that animates so many ongoing debates—inside and outside the academy—about cultural and political affairs.
The Paradox of the Public Realm in Richard Rorty
Martha Palacio Avenda?o
Ideas y Valores , 2008,
Abstract: The concepto of the public sphere in Richard Rorty's philosophy, inherited of liberal tradition, allows be treated as a part of a game of language called democratic liberalism. One of the rules for validating a move in this game consists in taking for granted the distinction between the public and the private spheres. Richard Rorty thought that democratic liberalism did not need any foundation beyond the way to play it; its only criteria would be the game's practices, according an utopia which would allow us to make more movements in the game. That is, democratic liberalism does not require foundations, but just practices for achieving a social hioe inspired on freedom and pluralism. This kind of utopia, based upon the non-cruelty principle, would make possible an inclusive society where everyone would have a place for their own private vocabulary. In this way, Rorty would have linked freedom and solidarity. However, this language-game reveals the paradox of the link which implies the meaning of the public shere. Herein, freedom is not a sufficient condition of solidarity; hence, there is no place for social inclusion in Rorty's language game.

The purpose of this article is to foster not only a deeper comprehension of the criticism aimed at Richard Rorty’s political philosophy, but also to suggest a more generous reading of its qualities. The main branch of analysis will be the ideas Rorty advances in “Contingency, Irony and Solidarity – the impact of acknowledging the contingency of beliefs that support liberaldemocratic values, the public-private distinction, the assumption of redescriptions as sources of moral progress – as well as the doubts they aroused. To do so, I will critically discuss objections and commentaries made by authors such as Jurgen Habermas, Richard Bernstein, Nancy Fraser, Christopher Voparil, James Conant, Thomas McCarthy, among others.
Será o neopragmatismo pragmatista? Interpelando Richard Rorty
Pogrebinschi, Thamy;
Novos Estudos - CEBRAP , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-33002006000100008
Abstract: there are two relevant differences between the pragmatism of charles s. peirce, william james and john dewey and richard rorty's neopragmatism. firstly, pragmatism is philosophically connected to realism while rorty's neopragmatism is deeply anti-realistic. secondly, rorty undermines the role experience plays on pragmatism by attaching an overwhelming theoretical value to the concept of language. given these two main differences of approach, this paper questions the supposed continuity between the features that define original pragmatism and rorty's neopragmatism.

This paper concerns the ironist tradition from the theoretical horizon of Richard Rorty, searching to reflect on the elements that constitute such tradition and on the way that this thinker ifinserts in this tradition. For this, first define what is a tradition and as Rorty describes the ironist tradition, for then, explaining the way he appropriates it, redefining it with a view to their political and utopian yearnings.
Reconsidering Richard Rorty’s Private-Public Distinction  [PDF]
Lior Erez
Humanities , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/h2020193
Abstract: This article provides a new interpretation of Richard Rorty’s notion of the private-public distinction. The first section of the article provides a short theoretical overview of the origins of the public-private distinction in Rorty’s political thought and clarifies the Rortian terminology. The main portion of the article is dedicated to the critique of Rorty’s private-public distinction, divided into two thematic sections: (i) the private-public distinction as undesirable and (ii) the private-public distinction as unattainable. I argue that Rorty’s formulation provides plausible answers to the first kind of criticism, but not to the second. Finally, a reformulation of the private-public distinction will be suggested, which both mitigates the second line of criticism and better coheres with Rorty’s general theory.
Richard Rorty, or the possibility of an universal ethnocentrism. Richard Rorty, o la posibilidad de un etnocentrismo universal
Isabel Gamero Cabrera
HYBRIS : Revista de Filsofía , 2010,
Abstract: In this paper we will try to understand and analyze the present implications of two thesis of the American philosopher Richard Rorty, related with his ethnocentrism: The global expansion of the liberal western democracy as a political goal and the reduction of personal beliefs to the private sphere. We will compare them with the theories of two other authors: An anthropological interpretation of the wittgensteinian language-games and the radical democracy by Chantal Mouffe.

Abstract: the paper aims to research the reception of richard rorty's work at education, especially in terms of the interpretation of brazilian marxist pedagogy. the description done by this tradition is presented: about neopragmatism and the critic of skepticisms (epistemological, ethical and political) that supposedly come from rorty's philosophy. the paper analyses also if the critics on rorty can be taken for grant when they are compared with another understanding of his work, less hostile and skeptical. this rediscription suggests limits and insufficiencies of the opposed description.
