Abstract: in the harvest year of 2004, a random sample of seed lots (n=165) from six rice-growing regions of rio grande do sul (rs) state, brazil, were examined under seed health blotter test. fungi growth resembling bipolaris or drechslera spp. was isolated and identified at the species level. observations on the anamorphic structures (conidiophores and conidia) allowed separation of isolates into three groups. pseudothecia, asci and ascospores from sexual crosses between isolates from a same anamorphic group but originated from different regions showed the typical characteristics of three recognized species (anamorph/teleomorph): bipolaris cynodontis (cochliobolus cynodontis); b. curvispora (c. melinidis) and b. oryzae (c. miyabeanus). all species were widely distributed across the rice-growing regions. overall, the most prevalent species were b. oryzae (44.6%) and b. curvispora (42,9%) followed by b. cynodontis (24,1%). this is the first report of b. cynodontis associated with rice seeds in brazil and the preliminary identification of b. curvispora in rice by the observation of the teleomorph phase was confirmed. the regional occurrence of a complex of pathogenic bipolaris species related to brown spot epidemics in other countries, may have epidemiological consequences in the region which deserve further investigation.

Desenvolvimento em Quest?o , 2012,
Abstract: The present study aims at approaching the trajectory of the petrochemical industry in the Southern Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Sul, and emphasizing its degree of contribution to regional development. We used an exploratory research with qualitative and quantitative approaches. The research design is that of "multiple case studies" based on a bibliographical research and a questionnaire applied to the nine enterprises which constitute the South Petrochemical Center. Results indicated that the acquisition of enterprises, such as Copesul, Petroquímica Triunfo and Ipiranga Petroquímica, by the Odebrecht/Mariani consortium represented a milestone in the restructuring of the South Petrochemical Center, integrating the row materials center with the enterprises of the second generation and enabling the Braskem's dominance in the Petrochemical Complex. Regarding the degree of contribution of the enterprises of the South Petrochemical Center to the regional development, we verified that three companies which belong to the Southern Petrochemical Complex show a high degree of contribution to regional development. Socioeconomic aspects associated with the companies, results obtained through cooperation and geographical aspects associated with the region were highly significant in achieving this degree of contribution.

RIO GRANDE DO SUL: UMA PROPOSTA DE REGIONALIZA O GEOECON MICA / Rio Grande do Sul: a proposal of geoeconomic regionalization

Revista Sociedade & Natureza , 2007,
Abstract: The regional approach reflects the society-nature inter-relation in different nuances goingfrom the onstruction of the geographical space. The focus of the research was defined from theobjectives proposed for the regional analysis, once the same embodies the human aspects andthe relations that mantain between each other in the production and reproduction of the space.Having as central focus the southern regional matter (in Rio Grande do Sul), it was proposedthe regionalization of the state, considering its geoeconomical aspects. Such proposition of study divided seven geoeconomic regions and sub-regions, in which the main productiveactivities of the state were developed, based, mainly, in farming. Considering the transformationsimposed here by capital, as reorganizer agent of the spacial standards, and responsiblefor its flexibility, front to the requirements imposed by the globalization process, it was tried toclassify the geoeconomic regions according to its dynamics and according the new economicagents that are inserted in this space. It was possible to observe that, therefore, the similaritiesand singularities materialized in the state territory throught the accumulation of practicesturned to the economical production, strictly linked to the question of cultural identity becauseof the expression of regionalism in the Rio Grande do Sul state.

Revista de Economia e Sociologia Rural , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20032010000100005
Abstract: this paper is about the links between entrepreneurship determinants, entrepreneurship rate and entrepreneurship consequences. a model relating demographic, cultural, economical and institutional antecedents to entrepreneurship rate and to economic and social regional performance is proposed and tested using rio grande do sul municipal data. the results support the view that institutional, economical and demographic variables shape entrepreneurship rate. moreover support was also found for the fact that the entrepreneurship rate impacts the development of localities. unlike other researches our results also suggest that the entrepreneurship rate mediates the effects of other variables on the regional economic and social performance. this result has important implications for establishing regional development policies because if the interest is to enhance economic and social development the best practice is to improve the entrepreneurship antecedents rather than only stimulate more people to start new business.
