A visit to the Armenian cemetery in Addis Ababa: Information about a diaspora and its funeral practices in Ethiopia  [cached]
Boris Adjemian
By studying places of burial in Addis Ababa, we can ponder the changing situation of Armenian immigrants and their descendants in Ethiopia during the 20th century. The Gulēlē international cemetery provides evidence of the fast growing population of foreigners in the country as of the reign of Menelik II. Its foundation raises questions about how these foreigners were perceived at the time. The funeral practices of Armenian immigrants and their descendants reflect the situation, so hard to understand, of persons who, though considered to be relatively close to Ethiopians, persisted in keeping to themselves as foreigners in the hereafter. This cemetery, the place that best signals the Armenian presence in the country, is a heritage for these immigrants’ descendants who still live in Ethiopia.

The Vlach funeral laments: Tradition revisited
Sorescu-Marinkovi? Annemarie
Balcanica , 2004, DOI: 10.2298/balc0535199s
Abstract: In the present study I have analyzed three Vlach funeral laments audio-recorded in 2004, during the fieldtrip to Valakonje, near Boljevac Serbia. I have taken into discussion the dynamics of the Vlach community and its present state, with the coexistence of conservatism and transformation. The paper focuses on the performer and shows how, in spite of the fact that she is a guest worker, she is a perfect bearer of tradition.
Psoriatic arthropathy in a 17th century archaeological protestant population belonging to Saint-Maurice cemetery in France
D Hadjouis
International Journal of Modern Anthropology , 2011,
Abstract: The protestant cemetery of Saint-Maurice as well as what remains of the Charenton Temple (1607-1686) are among the most recently excavated sites of the Val de Marne. The salvage excavation directed by J. Y. Dufour of Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives (INRAP) in 2005, where a medical facility was built, was instrumental in flagging not only an important 17th century protestant cemetery, but also in locating the foundations of the first temple built in 1607, that was the most important reformed church of the French realm. The cemetery is all the more special from an anthropological point of view since its funeral population comes from the Huguenot community of Paris, probably over a period of 80 years from 1606 to 1685 (Dufour & Buquet, 2006). The identification (Dufour, 2001) and the excavation that concerned the western part of the cemetery allowed for the identification of 163 individual burials, one double burial, and seven ossuaries. The funerary, anthropological and pale pathological contexts feature funerary practices related to the protestant cult and a sanitary state that have been rarely studied in a modern era in Northern France. Besides a plague epidemic that appeared as soon as 1636 or even before in the area of the Marne mander, and more precisely in Saint-Maurice, psoriatic arthropathy (or psoriatic arthritis) lesions were diagnosed on the skeletons of an important population that had never been described before. The lesion symptoms of this polyarthritis found on the mobile joints, especially on the interphalangeal articulations are rarely observed because of the preservation of the skeletons.
Funeral and Magical Rituals among the Komi  [PDF]
Galina Misharina
Folklore : Electronic Journal of Folklore , 2011,
Abstract: The article dwells upon two types of Komi ritual lamentation: funerallaments and the ones used for expelling bedbugs from the house or forridding the fields of burdock. The focus is on the magic aspect of ritual lamentation, together with the analysis of the genres of laments within protective rites – although the texts used in such rites actually operate as charms and incantation, the context of the custom reveals a number of elements which are intrinsic of the logic of presenting laments. The author comes to the conclusion, by way ofanalysing the texts performed at funerals and ward-off rites that besides the poesy, uniform popular terminology and recitative presentation, these texts have similar performing characteristics and unitary magic. As an integrated whole, these characteristics make it possible to use the same terminology with regard to the texts used in protective magic rites and the ones of funeral customs.

The objective of this work is to describe the funeral customs that are practiced today in the locality of Hoyada, placed 3000 m.a.s.l. in the Valley of Cajón, in the Catamarca Province in northwestern Argentina. The rituals that we have recorded encompass two instances: the first when there is the death of an adult member of this population, or when the soul completes its journey to the beyond; and second, for the "Day of Souls," or the day in which the souls return to this world in order to unite with their relatives, land and home

Al-Qantara : Revista de Estudios Arabes , 2001,
Abstract: The present article has as its main aim the translation and study of the three funerary inscriptions found in Orihuela (Alicante) during the course of some diggings. These are the first steles found in this city that definitely belong to Orihuela. All of them, although they are quite damaged, have preserved the date and they belong to the 4th H./l0th A.D. century.
