There is little systematic information on phenology of 'Hass' avocado in Michoacán and it is important to increase the efficiency of orchard's management practices to improve its productivity. The goal of this study was to develop phenological models from the dates of occurrence of the main shoot and root growth flushes in different 'Hass' production areas of the state of Michoacán. The study was conducted during 2006-2008 in 14 mature 'Hass' avocado orchards grown under irrigation and without irrigation in seven climates of Michoacán. In all climates and in both irrigated and non irrigated orchards, 'Hass' presented three flushes of vegetative growth: winter (highe

Abstract: The genus Chionaspis (Hemiptera, Diaspididae) includes two North American species of armored scale insects feeding on Pinaceae: Chionaspis heterophyllae Cooley, and C. pinifoliae (Fitch). Despite the economic impact of conifer-feeding Chionaspis on horticulture, the species diversity in this group has only recently been systematically investigated using samples from across the group’s geographic and host range. This paper provides morphological recognition characters for four new species that were recently hypothesized to exist on the basis of molecular evidence. The new species, here described, are Chionaspis brachycephalon Vea sp. n., Chionaspis caudata Vea sp. n., Chionaspis sonorae Vea sp. n. and Chionaspis torreyanae Vea sp. n. One of the new species, C. caudata Vea, has a gland spine at the apex of the pygidium, between the median lobes, unlike any other species of Chionaspis. An identification key to the species of Chionaspis feeding on pine in North America is provided.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to study the biology, morphology and behavior of aspidiotus nerii bouché, 1833 (hemiptera: diaspididae) under controlled conditions (25±1°c, 70±10% r.h. and 12 hours of photophase), using "cabotiá" cucumber pumpkins as hosts. nymphs of the 1st stage obtained of mass rearing (mother culture) were transfered to "cabotiá" pumpkins, properly cleaned and disposed in acclimatized cameras. the medium period for fixation of the nymphs was of 2.4±0.33 hours. the 1st and 2nd stages, after the fixation of the nymphs, lasted 8.3±0.06 and 19.4±0.11 days, respectively, totalizing a nymphal phase of 27.9±0.11 days. 36 females were observed daily until the end of the cycle. the pre-reproductive and reproductive periods lasted 17.3±0.18 and 68.2±4.33 days, respectively. the medium total number of nymphs/female was 175.5±10.29 and the medium number of nymphs/female/day was 2.7±0.11. the female's longevity was 100.5±4.51 days.

Abstract: . Monalonion velezangeli is considered one of the most harmful pests of avocado cv. Hass, as far as it attacks vegetative buds, flowers and fruits during all the productive stages of the crop. This situation is aggravated by the lack of knowledge on insect preferences and their relationship with crop phenology. As a contribution to the management of this insect, we studied the relationship between plant phenology and the presence of M. velezangeli, as well as its preferences across tree strata and structures. Data were obtained from six orchards located in the Colombian departments of Antioquia, Caldas and Quindío. After randomly selecting 20 trees at each orchard, 12 branches were marked on each tree, covering the combinations of the four cardinal points with three plant strata (low, medium and high). During a period of 12 months, each branch was monitored by recording its phenological stage (vegetative, flowering and fruiting), the number of individuals of M. velezangeli and the presence of fresh damages on it. An analysis of variance determined that the presence of the insect and its damage were more abundant on the flowering and fruiting branches than on the vegetative ones, as well as in the medium and upper strata of the trees. The damage caused by M. velezangeli was observed to be significantly higher in the reproductive structures (flowers and fruits) as compared to the vegetative structures.
