GMS Zeitschrift für Medizinische Ausbildung , 2005,
Abstract: Background: The University of Witten/Herdecke was founded in 1983 as the first private university in Germany to teach medicine. The University is not part of the centralized state system of medical placement distribution but rather has its own concept and procedure relating to its choice of students. In order to evaluate reliability and validity of the process of selecting medical students at the University of Witten/Herdecke, the first step was to analyse the interview selection process.Material and methods: The basic foundation of this examination were the results of the interview period of of the admission process from 1999 to 2000. In order to test inter-rater-reliability of the interviewers, a modified Cohen Kappa coefficient for multiple nominal scaled variables was used with regards to the group as a whole and also individually for the subgroups gender, admission year, age-groups and A Level results. Results: With Kappa-values ranging from 0.70 in 2000 to 0.88 in 1999 the reliability of the interviewer-process is obvious. However there are clear differences in the two years examined with regards to agreement in the decisions of interviewers. In the subgroup analysis with regards to gender no differences in the Kappa values were seen (male: 0,81; female: 0.8). Slightly less agreement can be seen with regards to subgroup analyses of A Level results of applicants ranging from 0.76 to 0.82.Discussion: In summary, this study shows that the application selection procedure for medicine at the medical faculty of the University of Witten/Herdecke is a reliable instrument with a high inter-rater reliability. This remains the case even though the interviewers do not seem to have standardized decision making criteria. Whether individual criteria/constellations were decisive with regards to the decision making process will be the subject of a further study.
Die angestrebte oder befürchtete berufliche Zukunft von Wittener Medizinstudierenden [The aimed or feared professional future of medical students at the Univesity of Witten/Herdecke]  [cached]

Abstract: [english] The current challenges of educational policy seem to be associated to changes of the health care system, to counteract concerns regarding the lack of physicians, supply shortage and migration of specialists. Therefore, expectations, wishes and concerns relevant to the anticipated everyday life as a physician of medical students at the Witten/Herdecke University (UWH) were acquired with an online questionnaire. Useful for a direct comparison the results of the online survey ‘Medical Study and Future’ throughout Germany have been used. Findings from this survey are common characteristics regarding the choice of the profession and planning of an establishment as a general practitioner and clear differences in reflecting on future issues in the occupational field.

Witten deformation and Morse category  [PDF]
Kaileung Chan,Naichung Conan Leung,Ziming Nikolas Ma
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: We prove the conjecture by Kenji Fukaya on Witten deformation of wedge product structure of differential forms, which said that the Witten twisted product structures having asymptotic expansions whose leading order terms are given by counting gradient flow trees appeared in the Morse category. This is an enhancement of ordinary Witten deformation relating Witten twisted complex to Morse complex. The proof uses semi-classical analysis for Witten twisted Green's operator.
Analysis of gauged Witten equation  [PDF]
Gang Tian,Guangbo Xu
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: The gauged Witten equation was essentially introduced by Witten in his formulation of gauged linear $\sigma$-model (GLSM). GLSM is a physics theory which explains the so-called Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence. This is the first paper in a series towards a mathematical construction of GLSM. In this paper we study some analytical properties of the gauged Witten equation for a Lagrange multiplier type superpotential. It contains the asymptotic property of finite energy solutions, the linear Fredholm property, the uniform $C^0$-bound, and the compactness of the moduli space of solutions over a fixed smooth $r$-spin curve with uniform energy bound.

Abstract: Motivated by Witten's spinor proof of the positive mass theorem, we analyze asymptotically constant harmonic spinors on complete asymptotically flat nonspin manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature.

Abstract: In this expository article, we explain how to use localization to compute Gromov-Witten invariants of smooth toric varieties and orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of smooth toric Deligne-Mumford stacks.

The Witten genus and vertex algebras  [PDF]
Pokman Cheung
Mathematics , 2008,
Abstract: This article is the first report of an ongoing project aimed at finding a geometric interpretation of the Witten genus and other tmf classes. Section 2 reviews the sheaves of chiral differential operators (CDOs) over a complex manifold, including their construction, obstructions and relation with the Witten genus. In section 3, the structure of each sheaf of CDOs is reorganized in terms of modules over the sheaf of holomorphic functions. This invokes the notion of a differential graded vertex algebroid. The construction of sheaves of CDOs is due to Gorbounov, Malikov and Schechtman, and so is the notion of a vertex algebroid; the differential graded version is first introduced here. Section 4 contains the main result, namely the construction of a sheaf of differential graded conformal vertex algebras that provides a fine resolution of a sheaf of CDOs. This `infinite dimensional Dolbeault complex' plays a role for the Witten genus similar to that of the Dolbeault complex for the Todd genus.
