The term Humanism has been used to name all theories that hold, as main principle, the respect to the human being. This word has an undisputable historical signification. Medicine as a profession starts from understanding men as biopsychosocial beings. Men constitute its main point of attention. Humanism is Medicine's philosophical conception, and it is also a demand of the medical practice. This work intends to illustrate the development of humanist thought in Latin America and Cuba through its greatest exponents and to outline this projection in the Cuban Public Health. With Marxism, humanism gained a proletary profile, all subhumanizing mechanisms of capitalism were clearly seen, and the possible ways of improvement were indicated. Humanism is a philosophical conception in which men are its

Bento XVI. Messianismo. Escatologia política. Abstract: Marxism appears repeatedly in Pope Benedict’s theology and teaching as a permanent enemy that Christianity must oppose without any possibilities of conciliation between them. However, what underlies this decisive rejection? To answer this question we look further into Joseph Ratzinger’s perspective starting with some of his theological writings (before the pontificate) followed by three of his encyclicals, the high point of his papal teaching (Deus caritas est, Spe salvi e Caritas in veritate). We argue that Benedict XVI's criticism, prior to being purely theological (or doctrinal), is philosophical, based on rationality and not in the faith professed by the Church, allowing him to treat marxism not simply as a political program that goes against some Christian values, but as a secularized Judeo-Christian eschatology, as a political messianism, therefore, as a religion, as a faith, that denies and empties the essential core of the Christian faith. And here is the root of his opposition. Keywords: Marxism. Benedict XVI. Messianism. Political eschatology.

Educación para un nuevo humanismo (Education for a new humanism)

Magis International Journal of Research in Education , 2009,
AbstractOur starting point is university’s social responsibility, many times assessed using indicators of applicability. We are warning the danger it entails for education in general, if we do not take as departure point the very same meaning of university and education, namely, if we do not start from their own identities. We suggest, thus, to retake the discussion around humanist education in education processes, for which we analyze very briefly Letter on humanism by Martin Heidegger; Rules for the human park by Peter Sloterdijk; The University without condition by Jacques Derrida and Cultivating humanity by Martha Nussbaum. The essay closes with the theory of communicative action of citizenship education by Jürgen Habermas. Humanismo y gestión de salud: pasado, presente y futuro Humanism and health management: past, present and future  [cached]
After a brief mention of Thomas′ disease, the situation accounting for the world tendency to deteriorating interpersonal relations in health management was assessed. Criteria about the breakdown of psychosocial aspects at the new cultural and spiritual levels were expounded. The increasing overlapping of strata involved in the integrated condition of the human being as well as the significance of identifying the qualitative leap that occurs when one sees the other people′s needs as if they were own were underlined. The latter is considered the basis of the service vocation and its variant in the healthcare field, that is, medical vocation. Commments were made on the relevance of humanism, spirituality and ethics for all healthcare workers and on what they mean for patients and relatives alike. Some measures were suggested to prevent humanism from vanishing and no longer existing as a fundamental frame for health management

Juan Antonio Pellicer y Saforcada (1738-1806) was a scholar and librarian at the Royal Library in Madrid. The author of various works on Spanish Golden Age writers (mainly Cervantes), he took advantage of the immense legacy for which he was responsible at the library to nourish his own writings: his Ensayo de una Bibliotheca de Traductores espa oles (1778), was a pioneering work on the subject, both in Spain and in Europe. As is argued in the present article, this work arguably marked the beginning of History of Translation studies, and a century later was to be the starting point for Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo’s Biblioteca de Traductores espa oles, a project spanning three decades. This article shows how Pellicer represents the synthesis of Humanism, understood as the study and preservation of classical Greco-Latin culture, and the new eighteenth-century Humanism, with its emphasis on collections, libraries and encyclopaedism: in other words, preserving the cultural legacy from a historiographical perspective.
