Bank Branch Grouping Strategy, an Unusual DEA Application  [PDF]

Abstract: This study uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to develop a grouping strategy for the bank branches of a large Canadian Bank. In order to benchmark their branches’ performance, the Bank first clusters the branches based on community type and population size—a not fully satisfactory approach. Hence, DEA was used to develop a grouping approach using an input oriented BCC production model to capture and analyze the aggregated effects of many complex processes. The model examines the relationship between staff and transaction activities. The peer references produced by the DEA model illustrate that the Bank’s current clustering methodology fails to compare some branches that are similar from an operational perspective; a flaw in the Bank’s current grouping approach. The new grouping strategy offers a fair and equitable set of benchmarking peers for every inefficient branch.

Abstract: Using DEA method, this paper mainly researches on the operating efficiency of the 18 Chinese crafts listed companies which are as decision making units (DMU). The net profit, gross income, total assets, the total cost, current assets, the number of employees are thought to input and output variables. Combining with the data results, this essay analyzes currently enterprises’ operating efficiency of Chinese crafts industries, which provide references for their development. Abstract: Operational research methodologies are a powerful tool assisting managers in their effort to critically review business data and decide on future business actions. This paper presents the application of Electre multi-criteria methodology and Data Envelopment Analysis, as a part of a small commercial bank's ongoing effort to reengineer its branch network. We focus on two particular problems: first, categorization of the branches so as to apply adequate equivalent organizational schemas and second the assessment of relative efficiency of human resources.

Abstract: We use DEA advantage efficiency model and disadvantage efficiency model to make an assessment of fourteen Chinese banks' DEA comprehensive efficiency in 2007. The result shows that the big four state-ownership banks are obvious less efficient than others by comparing the share reform before and after the changes with 2003 data. After Charners-Cooper linear change and dual exchange of the CCR model, a model (D) is gotten, with which an analysis is conducted to examine the fourteen Chinese banks' comprehensive efficiency, and it is found that large-scale economy is not apparent in the bank industry.

Abstract: This study provides comparative analysis of different banks branches efficiency in Pakistan during the year 2010. The main objective of the study is to develop an effective model for measuring the relative efficiency and achievable development proficiency of selected bank branches by analyzing their competencies and deficiencies through application of Data Envelopment Analysis. Further more, this study is to measure the production and profitability features of bank branches and examine that how the scale efficiency is determined by size of selected branches. The results of the study indicates that after estimation of efficiency under constant returns to scale, two banks are comparatively efficient and eight banks are comparatively less efficient. The less efficient banks have need to improve their overall system i.e., well equipped technological system and best utilization of all input resources in order to meet the challenging environment and their competitors.

Abstract: This study applies Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to measure the relative efficiencies on a bank in Taiwan and examine the performance and productivity changes when banks implement financial electronic data interchange. The article includes 18 branches of theperformance for implementation of financial electronic data interchange of the overall efficiency, pure technical efficiency, scale efficiency, analysis of reference groups and the potential to improve the value of analysis for different branch performance assessments.DEA methodology can facilitate banks in examining their business options and further pinpoint the weakness and strengths in branch operations. Our empirical results shown that case bank can adopt the DEA evaluation model as references to upgrade the overalloperating performance effectively for creating competitive advantages.

Abstract: In order to explore the configuration of the railway freight shunting locomotives, improve the efficiency of locomotive operation; a DEA cross evaluating method based on grey incidence analysis is presented in this paper. This method is based on collecting underlying data of factors that influence the shunting operation efficiency in train service depot, which utilizes grey incidence analysis to establish corresponding evaluation indicators system. Furthermore, the method as well adopts DEA and DEA cross efficiency model to analyze, evaluate and estimate the efficiency of shunting locomotives operation in train service depots. A sorting result of the efficiency of shunting locomotives operation in each train service depot has been acquired with help of programming using MATLAB 7.0. What the result indicates is that the DEA cross efficiency evaluating model based on grey incidence analysis can reflect the actual state of the efficiency of shunting locomotives operation in each train service depot. Eventually, based on a projection analysis of non-DEA's three decision-making units, key factors that influence the efficiency of shunting locomotives operation are identified, which can provide decision support for further improvement of the configuration and operation in train service depots.

Abstract: In the past 10 years, China's online game industry has become a sunrise industry with unlimited potential as its rapid development. Its rapid growth not only provides important support for the new round of upcoming economic growth, but also becomes a measure on building an innovation-oriented country comprehensively by grasping strategic opportunities of new scientific and technological revolution in China. However, its overall operating efficiency is not high due to the characteristics of online game industry, being young people indulgence in online games, homogeneity of games, talent shortage, virtual property transactions and other issues. In this paper, the target system is built to reflect the operational efficiency of this industry, according to economic data of liquid assets, fixed assets, employee salaries, administrative expenses, financial expenses, total profit and net investment income of the domestic 15 listed online game industries selected. Then operating efficiency is analyzed respectively based on the 2002-2008 panel data by using super-efficient data envelopment analysis and window analysis. The empirical results show that the operating efficiency of these enterprises has great fluctuation in seven years, being the widespread phenomena of inputs redundancy and outputs shortage; when the entire industry is in the period of increasing returns to scale, it is an urgent task to help enterprises become bigger and stronger in current time.

Abstract: Taking China’s 56 national high-tech zones as the research objects, this paper respectively dis-cusses the decomposition, features and diversity issues of the operational efficiency of the high- tech zones, based on DEA evaluation of its comprehensive efficiency, pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency. This research shows: 1) Over the years, the operating efficiency of China’s high- tech zones characterizes cycle development, and the low efficiency of the “first entrepreneurship” and “secondary entrepreneurship” stages result from invalid scale efficiency and pure technical efficiency; 2) China’s high-tech zones can be divided into four types, namely, the versatile and efficient type, the inefficient scale type, the inefficient allocation type and the continuous improvement type, and the low efficiency of high-tech zones is mainly rooted in pure technical inefficiency.
